New Dhaka Daze

Advantages: Convenient if you happen to work there.
Disadvantages: Er, there's just not much there.

...They say the best way to get to know a place is to live there. I lived in New Dhaka for three years so I know a wee bit about what it's like. Although I didn't personally count the inhabitants of Dhaka, I believe there were about 8 million a couple of years ago. Your guess is as good as mine how many there are now. Like many of the cities which were part of the old British India, (of which Dhaka was one until 1947) this huge sprawling city has its old and new districts. The old, typically, is a mass of narrow alleys, bustling with rickshaws, tuk-tuks, bicycles and all modes of transport. But the whole city is too big for just one op, so I'll just tell you about New Dhaka for now. The new area consists mainly of the diplomatic enclaves, aid projects and some newer markets. It's clearly divided into three distinct areas. Baridhara...

Stir Your Tea? Fondle Your Genitals?

Advantages: Comfy Room, Friendly Service, Some Good Restaurants
Disadvantages: Service Too Friendly!

...It's not very often that I want to shout at someone, specially for trying to be helpful. And even less often that I feel obliged to defend my honour, such that it is. Both of these occasions arose during my stay at the Sheraton in Dhaka. I've stayed also at the unpronounceable Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel but on one occasion, for whatever reason, I decided to try the Sheraton. I think maybe I needed the Starwood points. However now, if I go back to Dhaka, I will start learning how to pronounce "Sonargaon"! It's Shon-a-gun, apparently Arrival Things started well. I arrived in Dhaka in the late afternoon and, before I even got to passport control, there was a man with a sign bearing my name. "I'm Mr Vodka," I introduced myself and he took my passport and arrival card and, minutes later, I was through immigration. I chuckled...

Pan Pacific What?

Advantages: Comfortable, pleasant, good service
Disadvantages: Not easy to work in the rooms

...Dhaka, Bangladesh. Not the kind of place you want to arrive late at night, when you can't pronounce the name of the hotel. In fact, there are some that would say it is not the kind of place you want to arrive at under any circumstances! However, the city itself was a fairly pleasant surprise - shopping malls, cheap pearls and even cheaper DVDs, but that's another story. Airport Pick-Up So there I was, getting off an aged Biman Airways aircraft, quite a few hours older (or delayed) than I should have been. It was approaching midnight, I knew that a car had been booked but would it still be there? Yes it was. Relief. I didn't fancy the idea of trying to say "Son-are-gow-on" to a taxi shark, even without drinking - specially as it is pronounced "Shon-are-gon". The hotel rep singled me out as I came toward customs. He nimbly...

Javed Miandad coach till 2003

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Javed Miandad's tenure as Pakistan cricket team's coach has been extended until the 2003 World Cup. Miandad, 43, took over as coach after Pakistan lost two Tests in the home series against Sri Lanka last March. Pakistan won the last Test against Sri Lanka in Karachi with Miandad as coach and then lifted the Sharjah Cup triangular series and the first Asia Cup title in Dhaka. He also led Pakistan to an away Test series victory against Sri Lanka. Pakistan will play in a Singapore triangular series from August 20-27 against South Africa and New Zealand....

One of my best journey is by Emirates

Advantages: Relaxing & comfortable journey
Disadvantages: hmm....

...I'm from Bangladesh and staying in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Every year I go to my country and each time I go with different airlines. I went with Saudi Arabian Airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Pakistan Airways, Qatar Airlines and recently I went by Emirates Airlines. I had a very pelasent experience with Emirates. With Emirates I went Jeddah to Dubai, and then to Dhaka. The flight leaving from Jeddah and landing in Dubai was on time, but it delayed an hour to take off from Dubai airport. The plane (Boeing 777) seems better for me then other planes. But the interior of the emirate was not seems very high quality. Seats ware also congested. The foods were delicious. Air hostess were very helpful and friendly. I felt great entertainment in the plane by watching so many channels, movies, songs coz Emirates provide seat...

A rare bit of good press for Bangladesh and General guide

Advantages: beautiful scenery, hospitable people, delicious food, fun things to do in the capital
Disadvantages: some areas can be dangerous.. monsoon weather won't be suitable for most blighty's

...Wow the sheer amount of terrible and quite condescending if not downright insulting drivel that gets spouted about Bangladesh makes me wonder two things: Are they talking about the same country? 2) Can people who have not properly visited the country not comment. I am ethnically Bangladeshi - well my parents are from there and we have house in the capital, I am fortunate in the respect that I grew up with both cultures fully having spent several months a year and a gap year working in dhaka - the capital. I did however grow up by and large in london with all the luxuries of living in a 1st world country, private school, drama school etc.. so I have an insight into living in both countries and environments, First of all there is no denying it is a poor country, a heavily overpopulated society where literacy levels are barely scraping...

Emirates Sucks!!!!

Advantages: Food, Inflight Service
Disadvantages: Customer Service, Gate Agents

...I am writing this email to share my recent experience with flying Emirates. I live in Houston, TX. My parents live in Dhaka, Bangladesh. My father recently broke his hip by accident and required surgery. I purchased a round trip Emirates e-ticket urgently from an independent agent in Austin, TX. There were so many problems during this round trip journey that I am writing two separate paragraphs to cover the entire experience. Houston, TX to Dhaka, Bangladesh: I left on July 10th to ensure that I am in Dhaka for my father?s surgery on the 12th. I was supposed to fly Continental from Houston to JFK and then make an Emirates connection to Dubai and onward to Dhaka. My CO flight from Houston to JFK kept getting delayed. I knew that if I waited for that flight I would miss my Emirates connection in JFK and ultimately miss my father...

Well worth making a trip down Brick Lane

Advantages: complex characters
Disadvantages: none

...Dhaka. I think the best part of the story is the way the author shows the importance of the relationship between Nazneen and her sister Hasina who still lives in Bangladesh and writes to Nazneen to tell her of her life in Bangladesh. Although you only read Hasina's letters and very rarely Nazneen's you still feel the power of the bond between two sisters that is so powerful nothing can break it. I am looking forward to seeing the reviews on the movie as I would like to know how it compares to the book for those that have read it. In short this book is well worth the 7.99 pricetag and can be found for as little as 4.74 online. Price - 7.99 Shortlisted for ? The guardian first book award Granta best of young british novelists The booker prize Publisher - Black Swan...

Bangladesh----the dreamland

Advantages: Everything isendowed with nature.
Disadvantages: Pockets of poverty and difficult destinations

...The name ?Bangladesh? carries lot of weight for the writer of this article. It is where his root of ethnicity lies and he inherits Bengali language as his mother tongue. It is a land of scenic beauty and rapid urban development. The large rivers like Padma,Meghna and Arialkhan has made the land fertile and rich in fisheries. The cities of Dhaka and Chattagram (erstwhile Chittagong) are comparable with any other modern city and thrive on business, trade & commerce, apart from their traditional importance. Sylhet with it?s lush, azure green tea plantations presents a world market to Bangladesh. District of Mymensingh boasts of ?Bangabandhu Bridge? across the riverMeghna. District of Faridpur is waterlogged almost throughout the year and is navigated by innumerable canals and waterways. District of Barisal is rich with cocoanut...

Disadvantages: Annoying puzzels

...Prince of Persia Warrior within After the prince defeated the sultan and stopped the sands of time from being released from the hour glass the prince though he was free from his burden, But after speaking to a crazy man in the desert, He discovers he is being chased by the Dhaka ''The Guardian of the time line'' and must change is destiny and stop the sands of time from being created by going to the Island of Time Difficulty This game is much harder than the first for many reasons, 1: you don't get the over powered dagger of time, 2:You have to pick up secondary weapons of which get destroyed over time 3: No Farrah to save your ass every 5 seconds Time of play: This game took me a fair few hours, I normally complete games relatively quickly and was fairly surprised when i found out i had spent all night playing the game...
