Brilliantly conceived, superbly directed, and beautifully acted, Babel is inarguably one of the best films of 2006. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his co-writer, Guillermo Arriaga (the two also collaborated on Amores Perros and 21 Grams) weave together the disparate strands of their story into a finely hewn fabric by focusing on what appear to be several equally incongruent characters: an American (Brad Pitt) touring Morocco with his wife (Cate Blanchet) become the focus of an international incident also involving a hardscrabble Moroccan farmer (Mustapha Rachidi) struggling to keep his two young sons in line and his family together. A San Diego nanny (Adriana Barraza), her employers absent, makes the disastrous decision to take their kids with her to a wedding in Mexico. And a deaf-mute Japanese teen (the extraordinary Rinko Kikuchi) deals with a relationship with her father (Koji Yakusho) and the world in general that's been upended by the death of her mother. It is perhaps not surprising, or particularly original, that a gun is the device that ties these people together. Yet Babel isn't merely about violence and its tragic consequences. It's about communication, and especially the lack of it--both intercultural, raising issues like terrorism and immigration, and intracultural, as basic as husbands talking to their wives and parents understanding their children. Iñárritu's command of his medium, sound and visual alike, is extraordinary; the camera work is by turns kinetic and restrained, the music always well matched to the scenes, the editing deft but not confusing, and the film (which clocks in at a lengthy 143 minutes) is filled with indelible moments. Many of those moments are also pretty stark and grim, and no will claim that all of this leads to a "happy" ending, but there is a sense of reconciliation, perhaps even resolution. "If You Want to be Understood... Listen," goes the tagline. And if you want a movie that will leave you thinking, Babel is it. --Sam Graham ... less

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Arabic ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), German ( Subtitles ), Greek ( Subtitles ), Hindi ( Subtitles ), Turkish ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: A sequel to Bob Hope's 1948 box-office success The Paleface, 1952's Son of Paleface is a superior product in every way, thanks largely to the spirited, creative direction of Frank Tashlin. Hope is cast as Junior Potter, a Harvard-educated dude who heads West to claim the inheritance left him by his gunslinger father. Much to his chagrin, Junior discovers that his dad has left him nothing but debts. To stave off Potter Sr.'s angry creditors, Junior pretends that his father has salted away a fortune somewhere in the hills. This arouses the attention of curvaceous saloon owner Mike (Jane Russell), who doubles as a mysterious masked bandit known as The Torch. Meanwhile, Roy Rogers (playing a federal agent named Roy Rogers) keeps tabs on Junior, hoping that he'll lead him to The Torch and her gang. True to form, ex-cartoonist Tashlin fills the screen with a wealth of inventive sight gags and inside jokes: Cecil B. DeMille shows up as a photographer in one scene, while in another, Hope, about to embark on the film's wild climactic chase sequence, shoos away a couple of vultures wearing bibs, warning them that "You'll make the whole thing look impossible." Our favorite scenes: Hope's Wile E. Coyote-like reaction to a particularly potent drink, and his bedroom scene with Roy Rogers' wonder horse Trigger. And don't forget the film's slightly risque punch line "Let's see them top that on television," (you have to be there). Songs in Son of Paleface include "You Are My Valley of Sunshine," "Four-Legged Friend," "Wing Ding Tonight," "What A Dirty Shame," and a reprise of The Paleface's Osc...Son of Paleface ( Son of Pale face ) ... less

Glass Polish Electronic Automotive Rust Protection

Welcome to the new advanced Automotive rust protection system. Through a unique and scientifically proven design Rust-Gard is the safe and affordable way to rustproof your vehicle. Rust-Gard uses a Patent Pending method of operation called Pulsed Current design. The active principle that delivers Rust-Gard's impressive results is a high-frequency direct current charge to the entire automobile's metal frame work and surface. Once installed, Rust-Gard delivers this charge many times a second for a pre-determined period of time, forming a protective coating of excess electrons. It is this coating which lessens the destructive oxidation and corrosion of your car's metals. The Advantages Higher resale value. A properly cared for car with no rust will achieve a far higher resale or lease-end value than a well-cared for car that exhibits signs of rust. A cleaner car. Air-borne dust will no longer be attracted to your car. Eliminate static shocks from your car. Suffer no more pain during dry weather. A better looking car. Rust is unsightly. A safer car. Structural components can fail due to excessive rusting. Keep your car longer. A car with rust will not last as long as a rust-free car. Not even scratches will rust! Contents: 1 x Rust-Gard Control Module 1 x wiring harness with in- line fuse and fuse holder 1 x pair of Velcro fastening pads 1 x fastener kit including cable ties 1 x sealed alcohol swipe pad 1 x Installation Manual Frequently Asked Questions How difficult is it to install? Not difficult at all. If you have sufficient skills to hang a picture, it will be no problem. It takes most people less than 30 minutes. Car dealers install it in around 10 minutes. I have a new car - why do I need rust protection? Automotive manufacturers constantly work to improve cars, but rust still occurs. As iron will always strive to return to its natural state, rust is not likely to go away as a problem for cars. My car has a galvanized body. Does it still need rust protection? A galvanized surface is coated with zinc to protect against corrosion. It takes longer for this to start rusting, but it will still rust. Fist you get white rust (which is oxidation of the zinc), and then you get the red rust associated with iron oxide. Your car salesman may have said the body of the car has been galvanized. This does not include painted surfaces such as the roof, bonnet, doors, boot etc. If you get a scratch on the boot or anywhere on the galvanized surfaces you will still get rust. Certain manufacturers claim their cars do not need rust protection. Is that true? You will find that those claims are made by certain sales people in showrooms. I am not aware of any manufacturers claiming their cars are rust proof. How does electronic rust protection compare to under body (chemical) rust proofing? Electronic rust protection is better than chemical rust-proofing because electronic rust-proofing protects the entire automobile not just those areas where sprayed on sealant has reached. Additionally, electronic rust-proofing is not dependent on the quality or skill of a sprayed on applicator. Will Rust-Gard interfere with my in-car entertainment system or drive computer? No. Rust-Gard has been tested and complies with international standards regarding EMC, EMI and RFI properties. Why don't manufacturers install this during manufacturing? Because it is a great source of income for their dealer network. Dealers charge upwards of £350 per installation. Manufacturers depend on their dealer networks and will not do something that will cut this excessive profit for them. Will it work on a car that is already rusty? Yes, but it will not reverse rust that has already been created. Will Rust-Gard stop scratches from rusting? Yes. ... less

Zhang Yimou, the celebrated "fifth generation" filmmaker from China, trained as a cinematographer before he turned to directing, and it shows in every colour-drenched, exquisitely composed frame of this 1989 romantic tragedy. The ageing Yang Jin-shan (Li Wei) runs a successful textile dying factory and purchases the beautiful Ju Dou (Gong Li) to continue his line, but when his own impotence shatters all hope of progeny, he takes his anger out on his innocent young bride. Gentle Yang Tian-qing (Li Bao-Tian) is the sole employee in the lonely factory and his tender friendship with Ju Dou blossoms into love. When Yang Jin-shan becomes wheelchair-bound, the lovers take their affair out into the open, producing a child that he must claim as his own to save face. The stark drama plays out against the astounding backdrop of coloured clothes draped throughout the factory and courtyard, like a rainbow holding out promise of a rich, vibrant world just out of reach. By contrast, the subdued performances hide the inner emotions behind a mask of social control. As the masks are pulled away behind the protective walls of the factory, the fragile triangle collapses as the child grows up espousing traditional values. The film was banned in China, where leaders saw it as an unflattering metaphor for modern Chinese life, a society ruled by a coterie of ageing, controlling men. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com ... less

Feng shui is an ancient Asian art that revolves around object placement in the home, garden and workplace. In fact, feng shui specialists claim that the flow of chi (energy) in the environment can directly affect our health, relationships, career and even finances. Even toilet placement can affect the happiness of a marriage or the luck of young children. "In feng shui, chi is viewed as the ever-present force that circulates and moves in the environment," writes author Lillian Too. "...and wherever chi settles it brings a special kind of energy that attracts good fortune."Written as a lively, comprehensive guide to feng shui, this 360-page book is full of practical suggestions, stunning line drawings, lavish photographs and just about everything you'd ever want to know about this ancient practice. The eight-part encyclopedia covers topics as diverse as "Using Mirrors to Deflect Bad Energy", "Overcoming Bad Feng Shui When Travelling" and "Good feng shui Trees". It also includes a thorough Feng Shui dictionary. Just be sure to place it next to a succulent potted jade plant to ensure prosperity! --Gail Hudson ... less

Fighting Words: Individuals, Communities, and Liberties of Speech - Kent Greenawalt

Should "hate speech" be made a criminal offense, or does the First Amendment oblige Americans to permit the use of epithets directed against a person's race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, or sexual preference? Does a campus speech code enhance or degrade democratic values? When someone burns an American flag or a draft card to express dismay with U.S. policy, what rights of free speech are involved? Are there dangers in fostering reverence for the flag? In a lucid and balanced analysis of contemporary court cases dealing with these problems, as well as those of obscenity and workplace harassment, the acclaimed First Amendment scholar Kent Greenawalt now addresses a broad general audience of readers interested in the most current free-speech issues. For a number of purposes, Greenawalt finds it instructive to compare U.S. and Canadian jurisprudence. He points out, for instance, that the theory under which the Canadian Supreme Court supports suppression of obscenity is strikingly in line with the claims of those feminists who regard obscenity as a major evil: equality, especially the aspirations to equality of groups victimized in the past, rates highly as a constitutional value in Canada. In addition to discussing the sometimes conflicting claims of those seeking freedom of speech and those working to promote equality and protect citizens from oppression, Greenawalt looks at what speech does as well as what it says. He also compares the importance of the motive of the speaker to the actual effect of speech on its audience. ... less

As is the vogue to release alternative versions of artist albums, Tosca continue the trend, commissioning a like-minded array of beat technicians to re-jig and modify aspects of the original Suzuki. With the emphasis on "aspects", Messrs Dorfmeister and Huber open the masters to only a handful of tracks from Suzuki with "Annanas" and "Busenfreund" claiming three and four remixes respectively. Suffice to say, those involved, including Burnt Friedman dZhian+Kamien, and Uko, actively instigate their own plans on the blueprints provided ensuring that the album flows with distinctive ease. Although titled with the In Dub postscript, the result is an album that carries the attitude of dub, rather than the traditionalist notion put to effect by other albums, such as the Mad Professor's collaboration with Massive Attack on No Protection. Therefore expect to hear elements of panning, reverb and bass intensity, but all within a framework that each of the producers involved are known for. Philippe Lussan, for example, transposes "Busenfreund" onto his own deep 4/4 template, Baby Mammoth take it in a lighter mid-tempo break-led direction, Walkner.Mostl a little tougher, but all with the original piano line and fx included. G-Corporation come closest to the literal brief with their take on "Annanas", a spacious bass-led relaxant, with sparse rimshot drums and melodica. An adequate late-night accompaniment. --Found Sounds ... less

Bad memory can cause anything from annoying error messages to complete system failures. Why risk it with cheap "mystery" memory? When you buy memory from Crucial, you're buying the same high-quality memory that leading computer manufacturers install in the systems they sell. In fact, because Crucial is a division of Micron, one of the world's largest DRAM manufacturers, chances are good that you have their memory in your system right now. While the "other guys" might claim to manufacture memory, they really just assemble modules out of chips made by someone else. Some don't have first-class assembly procedures, and some even use chips that failed to meet computer manufacturer's stringent testing requirements. Crucial memory goes through much more rigorous testing procedures than many other brands of memory. Some memory assemblers choose to accept a certain "defect rate" because it's cheaper to deal with returns than to test every part they sell. That may help their bottom line, but it's sure a pain in the neck if you're one of the customers who ends up with a bad module. That's why Crucial thoroughly tests EVERY module they sell and put their name only on the ones that meet their strict standards. You might expect memory this good to cost a lot more, but you'd be wrong. As an online memory upgrade provider selling directly from the manufacturer, Crucial memory is often available at lower prices than lower-quality modules. ... less

As an online memory upgrade provider selling directly from the manufacturer, Crucial memory is often available at lower prices than lower-quality modules. ...

--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com ... less

Advantages: Simple to set up & easy to make claims
Disadvantages: None!
...get the balance between good cover and reasonable cost. I love my dogs but I'm not made of money. Pet Insurance is the most likely policy you will claim on.
My partner already had a Direct Line policy for car insurance and breakdown cover and there website advertised that you could receive a discount if someone at your address had a policy. It didn't matter to Direct Line that the current...

Unethical Claims Direct
Advantages: Good if you fancy trying to get some money for scratchcards and you're on the dole.
Disadvantages: Unethical, sharks, no win-no fee-major aggro
...At the moment we have a particularly nasty kind of advert on the TV. In the past I used to whinge about ads that where just plain cheesy, but now I have ads that I am able to complain about and actually feel justified - the 'Let Us Sue the World For You' ads.
Claims Direct, Accident Bureaux and the like are all the most unethical adverts I have ever seen, and are promoting the 'sue everyone...

...Has anyone seen the Direct Line Insurance adverts? It makes it look so easy to make your claim, 'we repair both cars and deliver them back to you'. Thought you might all like to know about our current experiences with them.
A few months back my husband had a car accident, no one was injured and the other driver accepted responsibilty from the outset. Both drivers belong to Direct Line...
