Discover your World!
Review of Discovery Channel - Discovery Channel by
travel-expert
Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: see text
...This is one of the flagships in the digital television fleet! The Discovery network has an almost worldwide presence and, unlike many other satellite / cable channels, does not rely heavily on a diet of recycled terrestrial programmes, but commissions many innovative series in its own right.
If you have seen some of the material on mainstream television, that is often because the have sold to, or co-produced documentaries with, the BBC, Channel 4 etc.
A marvellous range of documentaries: history, geography, technology - if it has an -ology, sooner or later they cover it!...

Animal Crackers!
Review of Animal Planet by
travel-expert
Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: see text
...Animal Planet is part of the world renowned Discovery Channel stable, and is only available if you have access to Sky Digital or through certain cable operators.
From 6 am to 12 pm they run, not surprisingly, animal programmes. Some of these tend to be repeats from the main Discovery channel, but there are also many originals.
There is a heavy bias toward Australia (sometimes I think it should br called Discovery Crocodile Dundee Channel!), but, on the whole, it is good educational entertainment for kids (much better than feeding them a diet of crappy American cartoons!)....

Discovery Network
Review of Discovery by
dgm2
Advantages: Discovery Network
Disadvantages: Nothing
...The Discovery Network is a groups of TV Cable Channels with interesting themes and here we have Discovery Channel with many documentals that it is so clasical that talks about the science advances for example, Discovery Travel and Adventure that it ia a channel that talks about touristic places in the world and we are knowing many place like visiting Estambul, Turkey and we can see "Travelers" and watching theirs adventures in the world and there are many problems that I don't remember another programmes.
We have "people and art" that we have programmes about the arts like music literature for example.
"Animal Planet" is a Discovery's channel that talks about the all kind of animals and the relationships with the men. So there are a programme about videos of some things of the Animal's gags.
And "Discovery Health" that it talks about...

Discover the Discovery Channel
Review of Discovery by
flashpointz
Advantages: great variety of factual programming
Disadvantages: too many repeats
...If there's one channel that you can always assume will have something good always to watch, it's the Discovery Channel. Having only improved with age, Discover has added quality show in recent years like:
The New Detectives - A forensic science based whodunnits. Crime fighting at a new level.
The FBI Files - a federal version of COPS. Use re-enacted scenes rather than actual footage.
Original Programming - Discovery has added plenty of animal and weather disaster type shows all of which are very interesting though sometimes seem repetitive.
The only real gripe I have is that too many of the programmes are repeated too often. Fine if you miss something, but... I suppose this is really a general criticism of Satellite/Cable channels generally today.
Certainly though, Discovery is quality enough to warrant anyone's occasional attention. Who...

An Excellent Discovery
Review of Discovery by
carolinesite
Advantages: Very interesting and informational
Disadvantages: Too many repeats.
...This happens to be one of my favourite TV channels, not just my favourite on the satellite network, but out of all the TV channels.
When there looks like nothing entertaining or interesting is on the main channels I always end up at the Discovery channel!!
There is always something interesting going on here. It is educational, therefore suitable for all the family.
They show a variety of good factual programmes and often have 'special' nights, where you can watch an array of programmes on the same topic - great if you are interested in that topic, and even better if you want to learn more about a certain topic.
I personally enjoy Thursday nights, which is called 'Crime Night' and features 'The Medical Detectives' for an hour, then 'The FBI Files' for another hour, and then 'The Forensic Detectives' for an hour!
All take true...

Excellent channel
Review of Discovery Channel - Discovery Channel by
india1
Advantages: excellent family channel
Disadvantages: none
...If you haven't watched this channel then you are really missing out. It's brilliant in terms of learning, educational, informational, adventurous and many more. You learn so many good things from this channel, that it's definitely one not to miss.
Available with the Sky package, it has a wide range of shows, on civilisations, wild animals, and the best of all on Steve Irwin.
For some of you who haven't heard of this mad man, he's the one who goes round chasing crocodiles, snakes and whatever more.
He must be mad and there's been a few close shave.
My little cousins watch this channel, and it makes them s fascinating, just like it makes me. That's the good thing, it appeals to adults and children. A family channel at it's best.......
Some of the inch by inch detail is fantastic, the skill of the camera man, to the reporting, there...

Worth a look for sure
Review of UK Horizons by
rowemg
Advantages: good evening lineup
Disadvantages: daytime nature grinds after a while
...When I got onto Digital I was very impressed by the number of documentry/science channels available and had not realised that this was also that type of channel.
I watch thids channel quite a bit now as it has a good mix of entertaining programs and also keeps my grey matter ticking over nicely.
I prefer the evning lineup as there are only so many programs on the mating habits of the brazilian toad that you can watch before they all merge into one big orge.
The mix of science and fly on the wall that appears here in the evenings is far more to my taste and so this channel gets a look in most nights. I think Discovery has a more varied line up but this isn't bad either...

Discover Discovery Civilisations
Review of Discovery Civilisations by
Manx
Advantages: Quality.
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too much in the way of repeats.
...There is no doubt in my mind that this is a wonderful channel, it is certainly one of my favourites. If you can pry me off M2 it will because (as it often does) Discovery Civilisations is showing a gem of a program.
DC is not just a cut above your average spammy TV channel because of the type of programs is airs, DC is better than the others because of the quality of the programs it shows. I think DC reaps the rewards of having the might Discovery as a parent channel; there is the money to make really good programs. DC also has the solid reputation it has made for itself to defend and keep.
The sort of programs you?ll encounter of DC range from information on Ancient Warriors (Celts, Romans, the Mongrel hoard and others) to information on civilisations past (The Egyptians, the ancient Greeks, the Mayans and others) and.? Well, I...

A good alternative
Review of Freeview by
starlight_xx
Advantages: Its cheap
Disadvantages: Limited channels, reception not always great
...If like me you cant get cable, and youre not allowed or dont want to put up a Sky dish then this is the way to go.
Freeview costs a one off payment for the box and thats it, no other fees (unless you chose to top up)
Being free, obviously the service is limited but it will give you things like ITV2, BBC2, CBeebies, a couple of music channels, a couple of news channels, FTN, ABC1 among others. It also boasts 20 Digital radio stations
If you chose to you can pay £7.99 a month and get a further 10 Channels including E4, UK Gold, Discovery Home and Leisure, UK Style, TCM and Discovery.
The downside which they dont shout about is a lot of these channels only operate part time. ABC1 from 0600 til 1800. H&L from 0600 until midday, UKStyle from 1800 til 2300 so strictly speaking youre only maybe getting 4 or 5 extra channels...

More channels, easy
Review of ITV Digital by
N1ck
Advantages: Easy to use, more channels, cheap, better quality
Disadvantages: Some channels are expensive, less channels than other providers
...will search for all the channels. All this will take under 30mins. Then you are all ready to watch all the primary channels (all channels such as Discovery (see below), except, ITV Sport, Skys Sports and Movie channels) until your heart is content.
Their adverts boast the '50 best channels,' while this is not strictly true, it is close to it.
The service does not offer the same volume of channels of Sky and the cable companies, it however does provide more versitility ( you can take the box anywhere because it only needs an aerial and a TV), you can choose your channels easier, so you only recieve the ones you want and the customer service is good.
ITV Digital also have Sky sports 1,2,3 and Sky premier and Moviemax, for films. They also have the ITV sport channel which shows Champions League games, Worthington Cup and Division 1 games. Sky do...
