...With people starting to amass more and more data on their PCs, the old methods of backup such as tape or CD & DVD are becoming woefully inadequate. As a result, by far the most cost efficient method for either storing data or backing it up is the external hard drive. That said, 1TB or 1 Terrabyte is a crazy amount of space and the sort of storage that would have kept a multinational company ticking over nicely ten years ago. The LaCie (pronounced Lassie, like the dog) 1TB unit is a reasonably basic device that only has a USB2 (although USB1 is supported) interface and comes with a suitable lead, external power supply and software CD. Got a Floppy Disk?

Advantages: Quick, Easy, Reliable, Small, Fits into any pocket or bag
Disadvantages: Faded out use lately

...I originally bought this external floppy drive a few years ago after the standard for laptops was not to have an inbuilt floppy drive already in them however at the time floppy disks were still in use from time to time. External Hard-drive fit for rugged adventures

Advantages: Fast transfer speed, protection from knocks and drops
Disadvantages: Fairly high price

...they have less than what they state. For e.g. a 320 GB hard-drive will have about 290 GB, which is quite a chunk away from the stated amount. So, looking at the LaCie external hard-drive you will be looking at a memory capacity of 230-240 GB, which in this case is not a large chunk, but is still considerable. There is no known reason why all hard-drives (including the LaCie) have less memory than stated, it may be due to the internal disk within the outer case not being able to hold the stated amount or it may be that company's want to make a profit out of its customers. No on really knows. If you don't believe me about the memory capacity of a hard drive being less than stated, you can yourself check your hard-drives capacity by going into 'My Computer' and then right clicking the computer hard-drive icon and going into its properties...

Review of LaCie Rugged Hard Disk Hard drive 250 GB

Great capacity hard disk for the price, stylish and simple too.

Advantages: Great Value, very reliable
Disadvantages: Short cables, and shows up fingerprints

...I purchased the LaCie 1TB as my first external hard drive, about 6 months ago. I wasn't sure how much space I would be needing, but as the LaCie was on offer for £75 for 1TB I couldn't really resist. The promotional literature for this Hard disk seems to keep reminding us that it was designed by Neil Poulton, someone who I'm not aware of, but must be pretty good judging by the design of this product. It is rare when talking about an external hard drive that style is a talking point, but in this case it is. It's a sleek black elegant looking case, very very shiny. At the front there is a small strip of blue light that activates whenever the hard drive is turned on, everything else it on the panel at the back (on switch, connectors and vent) making the device very uncluttered and minimalist. Handy little flash drive

Advantages: nice, damage-proof, user-friendly, not bad price

...and the next thing you know they're gone! An absolute nightmare, once you've lost a lid they never seem to return, and without a lid your usb is easily going to get damaged. All these problems are erased with SanDisk's excellent solution. On the back of the pen drive is the SanDisk logo, followed by the U3 Smart logo (which we'll come to later) and in small writing are the products serial number, where the products made (china, obviously), and a few small symbols you see on most products. On the front of the pen drive to the left of the slider lays the products name 'cruzer' in a stylish font, and on the right of the slider lays micro 8gb (or whatever size you have) in the same stylish font. Your life on a stick: the SanDisk Cruzer Micro

Advantages: 4 GB, U3, Compact Stick, Reasonably Fast Write Speed,

...Lets start off with the stick itself. This is a reasonably good looking stick, although it feels a bit cheap. It's compact. Or at least on my machine it's compact enough to use two of them at the same time, which is an improvement on my Corsair Flash Voyager. It comes with the usual lanyard and keyring to keep you from losing it. And another thing you won't need to worry is losing the little cap that most memory sticks feel obliged to have. All thats needed is to pull the switch and the USB plug glides into the case. Well it doesn't glide exactly, or at least not at first. In any case, at least it's not too loose and slipping in and out all the time. Capacity wise 4GB should be enough for most users.
