The Distillery that Jack Built
Advantages: Free, fascinating, fulfilling
Disadvantages: Too far to go as often as I'd like!
...Distillery and Visitors Centre (or Center if you?re American and don?t know how to spell properly!). Beautifully tended flower beds and manicured greener than green lawns are laid out in an almost quintessentially English style in front of the main building. The building is quite new but does not look out of place in its surroundings with its darkened windows and pale timbers.
Inside is a permanent exhibition devoted to the history of the distillery at Lynchburg which uses some fantastic old photographs of former staff at their work going way back to the very early days of the enterprise. It?s a good idea to have the exhibitionat this point because this is where you come first to collect the ticket for your tour. While you may have booked for a particular time, you will usually be given a card for the next available tour when you announce...

Whisky Galore!
Advantages: A great tour with a generous dram of whisky in with the price.
Disadvantages: Not easy to get to by public transport.
...During our trip to Scotland in June this year we went out on a few day trips. One of these was to a distillery nearby. Over the past couple of years we have visited quite a few different breweries, so we thought it would be nice to go to distillery to see the difference between producing beer and whisky. The area we were staying in, Dumfries and Galloway, isn?t as well known for whisky making as other areas in Scotland, but we did find one this far south. The particular distillery we ended up in was Bladnoch.
~~~WHERE IS BLADNOCH DISTILLERY?
Bladnoch is located by the side of the River Bladnoch, the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland. As I mentioned before it is southern most producer of whisky in Scotland. If you are traveling there by road, from Dumfries or Stranraer, you need to turn off of the A75 at the roundabout...
Oban and Distillery
Advantages: distillery
Disadvantages: not much else
...Oban distillery is interesting and as it's in the centre of the town it's much easier to get to than many other distilleries. They charge about three pounds to get in, which I thought was a bit steep considering some other distilleries don't charge anything. The money is refunded if you buy a bottle of their single malt. It is rather good and not as heavy as the Islay malts although it's still rather smoky - I liked it. The tour doesn't just tell you about the whisky but about the area as well. There's not much else to Oban other than ferries, shops and loads of B&Bs. Don't go to their "recommended" restaurants until you've had a look round. There are plenty of places to eat. On a sunny day it's also quite pleasant just to sit on the harbour and watch the world go by....
Whiskey Galore! well sort of,
Advantages: Free Tasting Session
Disadvantages: Somewhat Rapid Tour
...AT A GLANCE SUMMARY
opening hours
9.30 ? 5.30: tours, shops, restaurant
(Carvery Lunch 12.30 -2.30)
Bar 5.30 ? Closing
cost
Euros 7.95 (Child 3.50, no whiskey)
Enjoyable tour around John Jameson's place with tasting which I found fair value for money. You only have to pay for the tour which is with a guide. It was once a distillery but is now just a museum with sound effects and smell cannons, but don?t let that put you off. Nice restaurant too! Comparable with other distilleries I have visited.
LONG WAY ROUND
Jameson Distillery sits snugly alongside Duck Lane Market and Smithfield?s Chimney. A throwback to an industrial age in Dublin now passed on. The commercial distillery activities have been transferred to Cork, which can also be visited. Dublin?s doesn?t require a vehicle to get there, so no one has to be DES...
Mine's a Longhorn, what's yours?
Advantages: Delicious
Disadvantages: Expensive but worth it.
...Are you looking for a good Malt Whisky to give as presents (or even to drink yourself) this Christmas?
Then let me introduce you to a paticular favourite of mine.
Longmorn 15 Year Old Malt Whisky
Over the years and after several holidays to Scotland I have sampled a plethora of single malts and have been taught on more than one occasion the "proper respect and appreciation for the
nectar."
If it wasn't so early as I write this review I would have indulged in a dram or so from my well hidden stash !
THE DISTILLERY
There are long roots to the distillery in the area know as Longmorn in Morayshire. A missionary named Maernanaog, or Mo-ernin-og, had brought Christianity to the Picts of Moray during the 7th Century. A church was built just outside of Elgin following his death in 625AD and named...
Balvenie DoubleWood. A taste of Heaven
Advantages: A fine Scotch
Disadvantages: None!
...The Balvenie Distillery of Banffshire, Scotland has been owned by the same family since it was founded in 1892.
The Balvenie Distillery can clam to be unique in that it can claim to be the only distillery that still grows all its own barley, still malts in its own traditional floor maltings and still uses coopers to tend to the tasks and also employs a coopersmith to tend to the maintenance and repairs of the casks.
This could well be at part of one of the reasons why the Balvenie DoubleWood is such a spectacular example of the Scotch distillers art and craft.
Balvenie DoubleWood is matured for twelve years in two casks. The first cask is your traditional whisky oak cask, where the whisky is matured first. This is said o build character.
This is as far as most other distillers bother to take the process. But not...
Keeping it in the family...
Advantages: Strong, flavourful, a unique Highlander
Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit too briney for some
...The Clynelish distillery (pronounced kline-leesh) was founded by the Marquess of Stafford in 1819, shortly before his elevation to Duke of Sutherland. This is a family I am related to, and so, this Scotch has some family ties. The distillery is only five miles away from Dunrobin Castle, ancestral family seat of the Duchy of Sutherland, way up north in Scotland. The distillery is open to visitors in the summer.
The Sutherland concerns included tenant farming (which produced the barley used for the distillery) and coal production at nearby Brora (that was of rather low quality). The distillery changed hands several times, was closed during the depression and the war, and a new distillery built in the 1960s. The old distillery was reopened for a time (under the name of Brora, by the same owners) but was closed again in the 1980s...
BASQUE COUNTRY
Advantages: GOOD FOOD
Disadvantages: SEPARATISTS
...Bayonne is the typical basque country and the many graffities are there to remind you this! The centre can be easily visited in one day on foot. There is also the local distillery with a licour made of 100 flowers from the Pyrenees. The distillery is called Izarra, once you are there just ask around, people know it. If you can, try to be there at the end of August, when the most important festival takes place. This is a bit like Pamplona, the only difference is that there are cows in the street and not bulls, and it seems that it is more the human who chase the animals here, rather than the other way round! I would suggest you look for accommodation out of the town, during the festival period, there are many nice villages around Bayonne. You will need a car, though....
27 year old Glenturret Single Malt Whisky
Advantages: Is there such a thing as a poor whisky?
Disadvantages: Yes, and this is one.
...In 2005, Douglas Laing, bottlers, brought 241 bottles from a single cask of 27 year old Glenturret Single Malt Whisky to the market. Having tried their 10 year old expression on a dozen or two occasions, I was surprised to find this rare offering somewhat of a let down.
The colour did not bode well for the taste buds. Despite being a bit more potent than the 10 year old (46.1%) the pale, straw-like colour was so appropriate for this rather dull drink.
While the 10 year old has overtones of Turkish delight and Parma violets, the 27 year old, whilst still maintaining the distillery's typical botanical air, was more cabbage and cauliflower, the blandness only being totally averted by the addition of some almond, and a hint of chocolate. Indeed, for a premium expression from a much loved and well respected distillery (despite being...
A superbly Balanced Gin
Advantages: Premium Product. Well Balanced. Lovely Flavour
Disadvantages: Very Few unless you dont like gin
...Plymouth gin has been distilled for over 200 years in the oldest gin distillery in the West Country. Since it was the preferred drink of the Royal Navy,not surprisingly this fine gin travelled the world. Gin connoisseurs love this gin from the fair city of Plymouth for its delightfully junipery flavour,its balance and the full flavoured punch it delivers.
This premium gin is a superb ingredient for sophisticated lovers of Martini and makes a great Gin and Tonic. Both Ian Fleming and Sir Winston Churchill were reputedly lovers of Plymouth gin and it was also greatly appreciated by Presidnt Roosevelt.
It weighs in at 41.2% alcohol by volume (ABV) and among its ingredients can be counted juniper berries, coriander seeds,angelica root, orrisroot and cardomom pod.
This is a nicely balanced gin and has many devotees. It is not...
