...I've wanted a DVD player that was capable of playing DivX files for a while because of all my anime and por...errr....other video files..., but the players cost more than normal DVD players so resisted for a while. I've seen brands such as KISS and Yamada but later came across this DK Digital DVD-500 DivX DVD player after the prices have dropped. It only cost £41.98 (61.52 Euros) from SVP Communications (AKA Blank Disc Shop). -= The Player =- The player looks sleek with a black and silver design. Black at the front with silver at the top and bottom curving in towards each other at the middle, which I think looks really good. ...What is a standalone DivX Player? Well let me start by explaining what DivX is. DivX could be described as the MP3 of video format. The DivX technology compresses video to a fraction of its original size for efficient storage on your hard drive and DVD and easy sharing online. There is also a non proprietary version out called Xvid, which is open source. Originally based on OpenDivX, XviD was started by a group of volunteer programmers after the OpenDivX source was closed. With the video format so compressed in this way, you can easily fit 5 X 1.5hr feature movies onto only one 4.7GB DVD disc. Also the quality is almost as good as a DVD. ...Before I bought this DVD player Id never really owned a DVD player before. I had however had and still do have a ps2 on which I used to play my DVDs. I never really went and still don’t go on this so much so I was going to sell it and buy a DVD player. In the end I decided to just keep the ps2 and to get a cheaper DVD player than I was looking for in the first place. The main reason why I wanted a new DVD instead of the one in the ps2 was so I could play divx format DVDs on it. Excellent Upscaling DIVx Player

Advantages: Upscaled DVDs look beautiful on Samsung TVs. DIVx playback is great.
Disadvantages: Slightly Slow to Startup. Remote control has no volume buttons for controlling Samsung TVs.

...A quick introduction to my setup. I own a Samsung LE40F86BDX (40" Glassy Screen LCD HDTV) and a Samsung LE23R87BDX (23" TFT Style LCD HDTV). The 40" has an HDMI input and the second has a DVI interface. When I purchased the 40" TV I found that my old Pioneer surround sound DVD player didn't give me a great picture always due to a few issues so, I bought the Samsung DVD-HD 870 player. The main features of the DVD player are, in addition to standard DVD playback, firstly, it's an upscaling player and secondly, it plays DIVx videos. On the 40" TV, I connected it using an HDMI to HDMI cable (available from play.com) to the TV. A connection like this will carry the audio and the video signals to the TV. Quite thin but rather wider than I would have liked, however it does fit in to my TV cabinet so I'm not too concerned. It has two headphone sockets with an independent volume control knob all front facing. ...I spent a long time looking for a DVD recorder that had a built in hard drive and could also play back divx files. As it turned out there are few options. It boiled down to this and several LG models which i learnt could not fast forward and rewind divx which made them useless to me. Even though this was the only unit that met my requirements im very pleased with it. First i'll talk about connections. It has 2 Scart sockets both of which are RGB enabled. It has component,S-video,DVI and HDMI and DV input. Only critisiscm with connections is that the unit doesn't pass through RGB when the recorder is switched off or in standby.
