Great machine if you work with it's limitations.
Review of Yamaha DJX by
corianlightsphere
Advantages: The sounds are great. Plays well with others.
Disadvantages: The internal clock timing is shaky + non-backlit LCD.
...I love this board. It's light, has built in monitor speakers, more features then you can shake a stick at, and some really sweet sounds, all user configurable.
I bought this at Daddy's Junkie Music in Albany N.Y. I got it for $100.00 used, without a manual, right at the time that the DJX-2 had just came out. It took me about 2 years to really know what I was doing with it, and when I finally figured out what I was doing, I was floored. This thing is so much more then just a keyboard. It's a drum machine, a sampler, a sequencer, and more.
All the midi functions can be turned on or off individually, and the patterns, as well as the arpeggiators are all output via midi to other devices! Even the Cs1x doesn't do that! You can assign 2 voices to play with each keystroke, and split the keyboard for even more! Then you can...

Biggin it up
Review of Yamaha DJX by
dobieg
Advantages: Easy to get results quickly, great fun
Disadvantages: requires constant button pressing
...The electronic music industry is littered with quirky 'novelties' which by all accounts should have been drowned at birth - this is not one of them!
I propose to review tonight the Yamaha DJX IIB 'beat box' which originally appeared in 1997.
The original DJX was a keyboard instrument, which as well as offering the usual multi-voice FM synthesis and rhythm section, the DJX IIB dispensed with the 'ivory end ebony' and concentrated on the percussion side.
Describing this unit is a little difficult without a photograph, so I've added one here - it comprises of a plastic box approximately twelve inches square by about four inches thick.
Along the top edge are connectors for power in (12V DC - the one I've found works best delivers 1200ma) stereo phono out, MIDI on and out, power switch, quarter inch headphone jack, and a phono-in used...

Good price, but you may find something better.
Review of Yamaha CS1X by
corianlightsphere
Advantages: Great electronic sounds. Midi in out and thru.
Disadvantages: Arpeggiator doesn't export it's sound.
...on the sounds this board produces. I just got a sampler however, so I'm thinking that I'm going to crack this baby back out to sample all the great sounds this thing has and then put it back in the closet.
Another low point with this synth: Though it has 30 different arpeggiators, and many different timings, plus the ability to program the start and end notes of the arpeggiator, unfortunately, the notes that sound from the Cs1x's arpeggiator aren't output via midi to other synths!!! What were they thinking?!?! Even the DJX-1 outputs it's arpeggiator values!
Also if you turn a bunch of knobs at the same time, sometimes the OS gets confused and takes a couple of seconds to catch up.
I've even had it lock up to the point of having to change patches to get the sound to come back-not very professional in my opinion.
I do like...

Roland EG-101
Review of Roland EG-101 by
sparkyonline
Advantages: Quality, sounds, grooveability
Disadvantages: Lacklustre preset patterns, clumsy OS
...I am into making dance music, and I previously had a Yamaha DJX. I would say the EG-101 is pretty similar in its features, but it isn't as immediately accessible, then again it is a much higher quality product.
This is a nice looking keyboard. It has a vintage look, analogue style knobs and some nice backlit buttons. There is only a tiny LED display, however - adequate, just.
The keyboard has 448 voices, some of which are just percussion sounds and not much use, but there are some seriously usable sounds here. The quality of sound production is truly excellent. The onboard speakers are also remarkably powerful.
Roland's way of selecting sounds, voices etc. isn't intuitive or obvious. You have to work at it! This isn't a toy by any means, but I know they could have made the thing easier to use.
There is an arpeggiator, which I...

One of the Main contenders in DJ headphones
Review of Technics RPDJ 1200 by
edlloyd01
Advantages: Style, comfort and ease of use.
Disadvantages: Average price??
...In my opinion there are pretty much 3 main contenders for DJ Headphones with designs that don't copy each other. Technics, Sony and Sennheiser. There are others but they are mostly just copies of Sony's MDVR 700. Such as Pioneer's HDJ1000, Stanton's DJ Pro 3000 and Beyerdynamic DJX1.
What I love about these headphones is the comfort. They really are a pair of comfortable headphones with their padded headband and nicely padded ear cups. It's not just the comfort level; it's the fact they stay on your head. When I DJ I tend to well...have a tendency to dance. This is why, for me, these headphones are great. They mold to your head and stay there, as they are lighter than most of the competition in this range as they only weigh 230g without the cord. With the rotary housing (which allows the arms to pivot at different angles and lock...
