...We all listen to the weather forecasts in the morning before work and of an evening before we go to bed, and often moan when the meteorologists get it wrong. However weather is a very complex thing and unless you paid great attention during geography lessons at school or work for the met office then like myself there's probably an waful lot of things about the weather which we don't know. The book called simply 'WEATHER' from the eyewitness guides range is a fantastic book. Although primarily aimed towards school children it contains some very interesting information, and answers some key questions, ie how hot is a lightning bolt?, why are clouds different shapes?, what goes on inside a thundercloud? etc. It really is a great reference book and I guarantee that if you read it for a few minutes you'll learn something that you didn...

Eyewitness - Ancient Egypt

Advantages: Great detail, amazing value for money

You can feel the quality in the cover, as all the pictures on the front and back are like 3D glossed, so they stand out against the background. The book is also full of reall interesting pictures, which are fantastic to scan into your computer, if you're doing work on the PC or laptop. The best picture for me is a 3D pyramid diagram which has been sliced through allowinng you to see what it would look like from both the inside and the outside. A few years ago we were studying the Egyptians at school, a we had to do a project on Ancient Egypt as a whole. At the time I didn't have a huge amount of money, and didn't really know what I was looking for in terms of a textbook so I rushed to a bookstore and found the cheapest thing I could find that suited my needs. However, for a recent short trip to Amsterdam I decided to get "Top 10 Amsterdam". It is a small, travel friendly guide that has the top ten of variety of things to do. It leads you straight to the very best of Amsterdam. Size- The book is 19 cm x 10 cm and 160 pages. The perfect size for a hand bag or ruck sack! Cover-The usual cardboard laminate colourful cover with beautiful images of Amsterdam. Inside front and back cover- VERY GOOD fold out maps of Amsterdam area by area, Central Amsterdam, Historic Centre and the Grachtengordel and the Amsterdam Transport Map. Advantages: Informative, educational, moving first-hand account of the Holocaust
Disadvantages: Would have liked a follow-up section, some apparent innacuracies

We need to know what happened in these camps - to educate ourselves and our children, to understand history, to arm ourselves against Holocaust deniers and to hopefully prevent such things happening again. The most recent book I have read on this subject is the account of Holocaust survivor Filip Muller in his book Eyewitness Auschwitz - Three Years in the Gas Chambers. This is the first time I have read someone's first-hand account of working in the gas chambers, and according to this book, he was the only one of the crematorium team to survive and publish his memories. Muller was born in 1922 in Sered, Czechoslovakia and was taken to Auschwitz in April 1942 aged twenty. Being male, young and fit, he was chosen to work in the building of the Crematoriums...
