...DLA - Disability Living Allowance.
~ DLA and my need to apply ~
After some years I was finally diagnosed with Arthritis. Subsequently in the last 2 years I've found it increasingly difficult with certain jobs, and so took the decision at the beginning of the year to go for Disability Living Allowance.
I will try and keep this review as short as possible, but there are a number of sections involved with DLA, which does increase the need to try and cover all areas if possible.
~ Just what is DLA? ~
Disability living allowance (DLA) is for people who either:
Have a physical or mental illness, or both.
The disability is severe enough to need help caring for yourself, and/or help while walking and difficulty walking.
You are under 65 years age when you claim
This is a form of benefit in two main parts. They are for Care...
Advantages: Enables those entitled to access facilities they could never afford. Disadvantages: May be some initial cash outlay, loss of mobility segment of DLA.
...The Motability Scheme is a wonderful idea. A registered charity this scheme offers those eligible access to facilities to enhance their mobility. The primary schemes cover the car scheme and wheelchair scheme. As we fall under the car scheme I will largely be addressing this part of Motability.
The Motability Scheme is available to all those on the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or according to www.mobility.co.uk those on War Pensioner's Mobility supplement. Now I have not the time or the energy to discuss the finer workings of the complex disability assessment but for those on any disability allowances it is worth checking your entitlement. We were entirely unaware of the scheme until my wife application for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) was accepted.
The Motability Scheme works in a variety...
Advantages: You get a brand new car Disadvantages: You rip off the taxpayer
...Are you disabled, in receipt of Disability Living Allowance Mobility Higher Rate and need a car to get about but are not sure what to do. Well wonder no more as I explain the process.
First of all you need to visit a few Motability Dealers in your area and, after a few test drives, decide on the vehicle you want. You can find most dealers by looking through Yellow Pages or surfing the internet and noting where they are.
Having chosen your vehicle and having ensured that you will be able to handle the vehicle without adaptations or if needed they can be fitted by your chosen dealer, you need to "get the ball rolling".
First off, get the dealer sales person responsible for Motability and go through the forms with him/her after which you will then need to visit the local DWP (DSS) offices and return your DLA payment book ensuring...
Advantages: Got the help I needed Disadvantages: kept me so stressed out
...It started of abit shakey, but that is the story of our life. We have had more than our fare share of disasters this year, health wise. I have been trying to get the doctors to do something about my arthritis and all I got was pills pills and more pills. So I took it on myself to try and get the DLA, that was at the start of the year, and ended up with the low rate care which gave me a small amount each.
Kennys work was getting bad as there was little work coming in to the factory, and meant that they were on short time for while.
We decided with the help of jimblob to go on the Waverly Paddle steamer which we got from Greenock and spent the whole day on it which was fantastic out there in the open sea I loved it, and it cost £29 each. It was our wedding anniversary, and kennys birthday at that time so it was a special time...
Advantages: NONE AT ALL Disadvantages: Totally useless, idiots of staff, and annoying operation
...I was a customer of WOOLWICH bank for over 20 years, and was fully satisfied with their operation. But in May of 2007 Woolwich closed transferring all their accounts to BARCLAYS.
I was therefore migrated without a real option.
There have been various issues with Barclays setup since being with them, that I've not approved of.
A month ago, because Woolwich offered my wife an account that COULDN'T go overdrawn, and Barclays don't operate this type of account she has been charged several times £30 overdraft fees because she has problems understanding money in general. So we decided to close her account completely and transfer her DLA benefit to my account so I can help her manage her affairs better.
Today DLA creditted my account as expected, but when I went ONLINE tonight to setup the bills she has to pay with this income, I was...

Advantages: Welfare non-means tested benefit Disadvantages: Is not always targeted or assessed fairly
...OP Updated - see conclusions:-
Disability Living Allowance (D.L.A.) is a United Kingdom welfare benefit provided to "disabled" citizens (who apply), providing an extra source of income designed to meet the added costs of living in society with a disability.
The UK Government introduced this benefit some years ago and various changes have taken place since then. The overall structure is to cater for two forms of disability: one "care" needs called the Care Component, and two "mobility" needs, called the Mobility Component.
For example, lower rate care includes where a person has difficulty cooking or preparing their own meals without help. The money is supposed to help meet this cost. In reality it is the disabled choice to use the money wisely. Mobility is when someone has genuine problems walking and/or using transport...

Advantages: Sharing a wealth of emotions. Disadvantages: Having to eventually retire
...ceases to amaze me.
To be at the home they have been assessed by various medical,
and psychological professionals and have been deemed suitable to receive residential care. They are then placed in a home that either their family or their social worker has agreed on and their life begins according to how they fit in and settle.
The government agrees on the funding that the individual will need to be kept in the home and arrange payment to an account each week. At the moment I believe that the Disability Living Allowance ( DLA ) is in two components. 1. Care component and 2. Mobility component.
Care component......... Highest rate is £67.00 per week
Middle rate is £44.85 per week
Low rate is £17.75 perweek
Mobility component ......High rate...
Advantages: Screen Size, Nvidia Graphics Disadvantages: Not really Vista ready, build quality questionable
...the 1.6ghz Centrino Duo is ample, but not really suited to higher end stuff like photo editting
The memory at 1gb is fine for windows Xp but could ideally use 2gb for Vista.
Please also note that this machine will greet you with errors every time you boot up in Vista due to it Having the Sonic solutions DLA driver installed - and so far as far as I know there isnt a fix - so it will prompt you 5 times before letting you bypass it.
Battery pack is quite large by comparison but due to the screen size and power consumption - dont expect to use it on battery for long anyway.
Addition of Bluetooth is a nice touch and of course as most laptops these days it comes with Wifi, it also has plenty of well placed USB ports and the nice addition of an SD card slot on the front
Overall its a nice mid range laptop but if you can afford it go...
Advantages: Comes with a lot of useful software Disadvantages: none
...The Benq Dwq1600 ia a robust DVD rewriter, which comes complete with software and plenty of built in technology disigned to ensure correct playing of unlevel DVDS and CDS.
The software you get free is WinDVD Creator 2.8B, Win DVD4.0B, Record now! 7.1, Sonic DLA 4.9.
I did find there to be a few problems with this drive, For a start it is only compatible with DVD+RW and DVD+R standards, there is no headphone outlet or volume control.
** The Overall Design **
The DW1600 has a standard specification, with a fairly fast speed on both single layer and dual-layer discs.
Shiws good rewriteable media and is pipped to the post by the feature-filled LiteOn an fast MSI
