My musings on the Museum of London Docklands

Advantages: well presented, not too busy, free for certin people
Disadvantages: not a lot for children in the main galleris

...The regeneration of London's Docklands has been a huge success. Derelict warehouses have been converted into swanky bars and restaurant, shipping companies have been superseded by financial institutions housed in shimmering ultra modern sky scrapers and traditional worker's houses have been replaced by Legoland waterfront apartments. Its a fascinating area but I find it a bit soulless and toy town especially with the DLR gliding along like a model rail. During a recent visits to docklands I decided to visits the Museum in the Docklands to explore the area's past, present and future. Premier Travel Inn, London Docklands

Advantages: Good rooms and service
Disadvantages: Quite remote

...and two London Docklands Railway stations, which in turn allow very easy access to Canary Wharf for entertainment. Overall a nice place to stay, they coped especially well with large groups and aprently have experience in this area due to the amount of corporate fnctions that the Excel hosts....

Advantages: Tube station 1 min walk away
Disadvantages: Difficult to find

...looking over the carpark, other wise your views not nice of a busy road which can be quit noisy. Bird's eye view of the Docklands

Advantages: Driverless, runs to time, good views
Disadvantages: Poor interior

...The Docklands Light Rail (DLR) operates services in the East of London. Passengers can travel as far as Beckton, Stratford and Lewisham (on the south side of the Thames in a new tunnel). Trains are driverless, meaning that passengers can sit in the 'driving seat' so to speak. An awesome experience! Built in the regeneration of the Docklands in the 1980's and 1990's, the system carries a large volume of passengers daily. A varied bunch of passengers, from the office worker heading to Canary Wharf or the City, local residents and university students are among the regular users. Trains run to time all the time, and passengers are kept up to date by screens on platforms, and on the Internet at their website (www.dlr.co.uk). Docklands gets a life

Advantages: Great architecture, good range of bars and shops
Disadvantages: Not many specific tourist attractions

...There was a time when Docklands and Canary Wharf were last on the list of tourist attractions in London. Now that is changing. The massive Canary Wharf development stands like a beacon in east London, with the 50-floor tower at One Canada Square being the tallest building in the UK. Unfortunately, it is closed to the public. However, for fans of architecture, there is plenty here to see and, if you fancy a breather, there are a growing number of shops, restaurants and bars to choose from. A cinema has also opened near Westferry and Cabot Hall hosts regular musical and comedy nights. Beyond Canary Wharf, try exploring the rest of Docklands using the Docklands Light Railway. Up & Coming Docklands

Advantages: Easily accessible by London Transport
Disadvantages: Prices are as expensive as being in the West End of London

...Look across the London horizon and the most noticeable building is Canada Tower in the heart of Docklands Canary Wharf. This 50 floor building dominates the Docklands area which is now the most up and coming area of London. Apart from new buildings for Financial Institutions, it has developed some very fasionable penthouse suites overlooking the Thames with City Airport just a couple of miles away. London Arena is also popular for both rock&pop concerts and is home to the Superleague Ice Hockey team, the London Knights. With a recent addition of a shopping mall, Canary Wharf is attracting many visitors. During the summer months, the Canary Wharf Management host many arts events which are free of charge. Why not check one out and see London E14 in all its splendour....

Aaaah the luxury!!

Advantages: good location, gorgeous hotel, great rooms, great staff, good facilities
Disadvantages: Quite expensive if you cant get a good deal

...the Victoria Line to Canning Town. At Canning Town we took the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Royal Victoria which although it meant a couple of changes was surprisingly simple for us public transport newbies! I do recommend purchasing a Pay as you go Oyster card as it is easy to top up and you can just tap it on the barriers as you get on and off the tube and DLR (and it automatically deducts the cost of your journey) which saved us a great deal of time and effort as we didn?t need to keep buying tickets. The hotel website reassured us that the hotel was within 5 minute walking distance from the DLR, but realistically it was about 2 minutes round the corner even with suitcases in tow! It is worth mentioning that whilst the hotel was so near the DLR (very convenient) from our room we could not hear the trains and were even able to keep our window...

Eastenders

Advantages: Fascinating area, lots of different things to see, richness of cultural diversity
Disadvantages: being rebuilt, has both the richest and poorest areas

...Docklands has been transformed in the past decade or so, but any number of new office developments cannot transform, beyond recognition, the heart of East London. I have a great deal of fondness for this little patch of East London, not least, because I worked for Tower Hamlets (the borough which emcompasses this part of town) for a while, learning the little streets as well as the fancy new apartment blocks on the banks of the Thames, and I developed a real affinity for the denizens of this little patch of land. For the purposes of this 'opinion', I am defining my own bounds of Docklands, from Wapping to the Isle of Dogs, and sticking to the riverside, as that, in effect, is what Docklands ever was, defined by the north bank of the Thames, just east of the City. Anti-luxury in Docklands

Advantages: Good location for Docklands and City Airport
Disadvantages: Overpriced, low standards, bad service

...offers 2 classes of room below the room I reserved - on Opodo the prices were £10 and £20 less than for the jacuzzi room. Every person that checked in whilst I was checking in (of which there were a large number!) had paid different amounts, ranging from £70 up to £170 per night from what I managed to hear. ---------LOCATION----------- The International is on Marsh Wall in Docklands. It's about a 10 minute walk from Canary Wharf underground station, or less from South Quay on the Docklands Light Rail. It's a very convenient location for London City airport, as it's a short train (on the DLR) and shuttle bus journey away. I'm afraid I've been unable to find out any information about parking, as I don't drive and their website is completely silent on the matter.
