...Sometimes films win major Oscars and quite frankly they don't deserve them. In recent years such formulaic entries such as A Beautiful Mind have walked away with top honours while far more original and challenging films leave with nothing. I thought that the same could be said for Million Dollar Baby, I had read comments that the film wasn't up to the hype and honour. Meanwhile others declared it the one of the year's best. Well it was with a bit of mile trepidation that I sat down to watch the dvd. However I was sure it would at least be a decent film because Clint Eastwood rarely puts a foot wrong and you can be sure of getting some quality product. A Dollar for the DVD

Advantages: Cheap and entertaining
Disadvantages: Not a Classic and definitely not Young Guns

...What can I say this is a must buy, but do not expect a classic. When you see Emilio Estevez and a western linked together you will think Young Guns. Do not be fooled into thinking that this is in the same league, it isn't. This is purely and simply a good made for TV western. Dollar for the Dead is billed as a tribute to Segio Leone, this would probably be an insult if the film wasn't so entertaining. Estevez plays 'The Man with No Name' the role immortalised by Clint Eastwood, but there just isn't the same menace as you would expect. Yes, Estevez is quick, shooting a man before the dropped glass of whiskey hits the floor, and yes there is mystery, why does Estevez trail an empty coffin around with him. Dollar....Very helpful

Advantages: Dollar offer a personal service
Disadvantages: all the extras you have to pay for...but its Universal

...I have to say that when in Florida I have always used Dollar Car Rentals, usually opting for the Airport Pick up and Drop off...We've used them at Tampa, Orlando and Kissimee.. Everyone hates paying those extras, and that ' including free car hire' that we keep getting thrown down our necks everytime we pick up a Florida Brochure is very misleading until you've read the small and smaller print.. On average a Family of say four people will pay around £400 for a two week car hire on top of their holiday price, and that is for an intermediate sized car or midsize, don't forget in the USA they may have bigger everything except for the Boot..you will get your car it will probably have a big engine, and you will have been told that it is a four or five person car..I bet you wont get 4 or 5 peoples luggage in the boot..it is always worth...

A bargain I thought, and I mossied up to the till paid my cash and returned to the homestead. This film is part of the Dollars trilogy, the first was A Fistful of Dollars, the second was For a Few Dollars More and the final one was The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, each one directed by Sergio Leone. Before these films, Sergio Leone was an unknown director, but these films made him into a household name, linking him to this type of western in many people?s minds. These kinds of Western became know as Spaghetti Westerns, because most of them were financed by Italian companies, and shot in either Italy or Spain. Sound as a Pound, err, I mean, Dollar!

Advantages: Friendly staff, lots of locations, good selection of cars, accept younger drivers
Disadvantages: pricey for younger drivers, no inspection of car prior to rental...not always a bad thing...

...After a last minute visit to friends in the US was arranged, it was quickly decided that I would need some form of transport when I got there, as the US is rather big! So I jumped on Google and started checking out car rental companies. Those of you that have found yourselves in a similar situation will be aware that there are rather a lot of rental companies out there, fortunately I was spared the agony of deciding between Thrifty, Alamo, Hertz, Avis et al by one deciding factor?. My age! Very few car rental companies in the US will rent to anyone under the age of 25, and only one of these had an office in Providence, Rhode Island. So it was that I became a customer of Dollar Rent A Car. Million Dollar Baby

Advantages: Visually stunning, top notch acting from main cast.
Disadvantages: Too generic, too preachy, one dimensional characters.

...I fear that I'm going to be the lone dissenting voice when it comes to Million Dollar Baby. I can hardly find a critic who doesn't like it, professional and amateur alike. I'm not entirely sure how this happened. Most films usually have some kind of divide of those who like and those who don't, but Million Dollar Baby seems to be attracting almost universal acclaim. For a deserving film, this would be a wonderful thing. Sadly, Million Dollar Baby isn't that film. We follow the story of Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank), a female boxer, who wants long-time trainer and gym owner Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) to train her. He refuses, making it clear that he doesn't "train girls". She won't give up, and eventually, with the help of his partner Eddie Dupris (Morgan Freeman), he relents, and they begin their push toward the title...

Million Dollars ... Worth every penny!

Advantages: Like Hovis - Best of Both, emotion-filled and Boxing together in one
Disadvantages: Not to everyones tastes

...not be compared with these because it is much more like a drama, dealing with much wider issues that just being a good fighter. There are some epic performances in this film, which are accompanied by magnificent direction and great scenes that allow the audience to connect with the characters and feel their pain and suffering and hardship throughout this great picture. Hilary Swank (Insomnia, The Core, The Black Dahlia, Boys Don't Cry) gives one of her most memorable performances after Insomnia, she is great as the gritty and determined young self-proclaimed white trash fighter. Clint Eastwood (Too many to name; Good the Bad and the Ugly, Fist Full of Dollars, Few Dollars More, Line of Fire, Blood Work, Dirty Harry, Space Cowboys) takes on a role that I did not see him playing.
