Dolores Claiborne

Advantages: the language, narrating, catchy
Disadvantages: I don't think there are any

...Stephen King - Dolores Claiborne This book was actually the first of Kings' I've ever read and maybe that's also why it's stuck in my memory the best and somehow had the most of impact on me. I think that's what books do, when you're a teenager and you read about stuff that could have pretty much happened to you, too. It's also the only of his books I've read in Czech instead of English and I feel compelled to look up the original version and get to it sometime soon as well. I'm not reviewing the Czech version but I'd just like to point to that the translation by Jiri Janda was excellent. Form The narrating is retrospective, that means the story is being told backwards and the biggest part of it is a monologue by the main character talking to police investigators. Storyline Dolores Claiborne is an elderly lady who tells...

Review of Dolores Claiborne - Stephen King

Why, Why, Why, Dolores

Advantages: Easy reading
Disadvantages: Poor characterisation, lack of suspense

...Stephen King has a story to tell. But not quite what his public expected. Stephen King has a confession to make?. (and it would appear that it is that he is desperate for ideas for an original storyline). Dolores Claiborne consists of the words uttered by the title character throughout a police interview for murder. The whole ?story? is told through her confession, which is interspersed with brief remarks to her interviewers. THE PLOT Dolores has been accused of murdering her employer, an elderly lady called Vera Donovan. Dolores denies from the outset that she was responsible, although she does state that she did murder her own husband. She relates the circumstances and plotting of her husband?s murder and then elaborates on what happened the day of her employer?s death. THE STYLE Dolores was born and bred in...

The White Hart, Lincoln

Advantages: Good setting, salubrious interior
Disadvantages: expensive, poor service

...Despite living in Lincoln, I have only the one experience of the White Hart. My cricket club had it's annual presentation dinner there last year. Location Set in the beautiful, historic uphill Bailgate area in the city centre, The White Hart is in the shadow of the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. This means it is in the upmarket area of the city, meaning that the prices are higher than if it were elsewhere in the city. Prices It has to be said that the prices are high. We paid £27 for the ticket and this included a 3 course meal and nothing else. At the bar before I bought a round of drinks (two pints of lager and a large glass of white) and it came to a shade over £10. This, to me is quite expensive. Food The food was not the highest quality - indeed for the price we paid it was distinctly below average. The starter...

The wonderful White Hart

Advantages: Great food and lovely place
Disadvantages: Only 1 of them!

...The White Hart, Lydgate, Manchester Going back many many moons (well okay approximately 10 years) the White Hart Inn in Lydgate was your bog standard, not very nice run of the mill typical English pub. It was then purchased by two nice gentlemen; one an extraordinarily talented chef and the other a wonderful business man and hey presto 10 years later you have one of the most thriving 'gastro pubs' in the country that people travel for miles around to come and eat at and has won award upon award. This is a wonderful place to drink and eat where the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the food is excellent and the surroundings spectacular. Where is it? The White Hart Inn is located in Lydgate Saddleworth and is approximately 15 miles from city centre Manchester and is only about 10 minutes drive from the M62 and is not far...

White Hart Hotel in Lincoln

Advantages: Close to Historical Landmarks, Friendly Staff, Good Rooms, Stylish
Disadvantages: Expensive Breakfast, Some parts need Refurbishment

...I am writing his review from my White Hart hotel room and in my opinion this is quite an above average hotel. I arrived here with my family (Mum and Dad) yesterday. It was pretty easy to find and get here from Leeds where we spent the day out, just off the A15, but in the next 2 hours when we check out we will be taking the A46 to return home (Reading). The hotel provides their own parking just round the side of the hotel, with a small bay which cars strictly shouldn't stay in at all, but seems to be used by taxis to drop people off. Upon arrival we were greeted by very pleasant reception staff who knew a lot about the local area. Asking about local restaurants they informed us about the various Italian, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, English Pubs and all about the restaurant they have which was very helpful. Even though a fair few must...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Beth Hart - she's more than just a screaming tirade of songs

Advantages: Extremely distinctive vocals, even unforgettable; some quality tracks
Disadvantages: 2nd half of the album tails off a bit in some respects

...CD Review: ?Screamin' For My Supper? ? Beth Hart (1999) Beth Hart? Isn?t she a little more rockier than your usual fare? Well, yes, she is ? regular readers of my reviews will have by now detected that I?m fond of Americana, roots, alt-blues, alt-country and alt-folk female singer-songwriters, with the odd shot of electronica thrown in for good measure, but I?ve also been known to supplement this diet quite often with hefty slices of out and out rock, especially when they come complete with an absolutely killer of a voice ? just like Beth Hart?s whiskeyed-tones. Tell the truth, though, I wasn?t entirely sure I?d go for this album as much as I did ? it initially sounded too much like ?rock? for my tastes. However, dipping in a track at a time recently, I?ve come to love it ? and now wonder why I ever doubted Beth?s talents...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...
