Doncaster's Minster Church

Advantages: Free to visit, lots of history
Disadvantages: Limited opening hours

...English churches. Similar wooden figures can also often be found carved onto the pews and Doncaster Minster has several examples of both of these types. These gargoyles have many different religious connotations but their original purposes are not fully understood, it is however thought that they probably have their origins in pre-Christian Pagan times. Overall I would certainly recommend a visit to the Parish Church of St George to anyone that has even the slightest bit of interest in such things. If you are planning a visit the contact details are as below: The Parish Church of St George George House Church Street Doncaster South Yorkshire DN1 1RD Telephone - (01302)323748 Email - minsteroffice@aol.com...

20's style in doncaster

Advantages: close to town centre
Disadvantages: can be noisy at night due to road.

...The Earl of Doncaster hotel was built in the 1920's and retains alot of the character from this period. They cater for weddings, christenings etc with a range of function rooms varying in size depending on your party. The restaurant is light, bright and airy and still retains the 20's charm. Rooms Generally good sizes with usual facilities. Nothing out of the ordinary with regards bathrooms, extras ect. Average price around £67 per room b&b. Bar Good selection of spirits, wines - reasonable prices for a hotel. Restaurant Has got better over the past few years. Menu has been better designed and food appears to be back to the quality it was 5-6 years ago. Special nights are organised and the Valantine's one is particually good. Pianist is good when he's playing. Overall Good hotel with average facilities. Worth trying...

Cusworth Hall, Doncaster.... a trip down Memory Lane

Advantages: Good day out
Disadvantages: None

...home to some lovely history collections, illustrating how people lived, worked and entertained themselves over the last two hundred years. It really is a lovely and educational place to visit. How to get there By Car: The Museum is located 2 miles north of Doncaster, off the A638 Doncaster to Wakefield Road. It is signposted from the A1 and A638. For sat nav purposes the post code is: DN5 7TU (Cusworth Lane) By Bus: Take the Mainline service 42 or 219 from the Frenchgate Interchange Stand A11, which run ten to and twenty past the hour (hourly on Sundays). Kempton Park Road stop. This service stops at the end of Cusworth Lane, then walk up to the Hall on foot. Telephone Travel South Yorkshire on 01709 515151 for full details of all bus services. My Opinion It was great revisiting Cusworth Hall after so many years, we had...

The Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery

Advantages: Free Entry, Lots to see, accesible by disabled
Disadvantages: Unattractive exterior of building

...The rather dull, unattractive facade of the Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery disguises what a real gem of a place this really is inside. This is Doncaster\'s only town centre museum and here you will find a whole range of different artefacts that tell the story of the history of this town back to the Roman times and even further beyond. The museum is on two different floors, both of which are fully accessible by disabled visitors, and there is a lift to the second floor. In front of the main entrance doors there is a large reception area, which has various leaflets and books relating to the local area. At this point you could be forgiven for thinking that you had walked into the local tourist information centre rather than a museum, but a quick glance around soon reveals several little anterooms, that lead off from this main foyer area...

Doncaster - A City In All But Name.

Advantages: Lots of history, Very accessible
Disadvantages: Not the prettiest of places

...Doncaster is a large town in South Yorkshire. There are in fact many people that believe that this town is large enough and has enough to offer to actually be classified as a City, but so far this status has eluded it. The general definition of a City is a town that has a Cathedral as its principal Parish Church. There are however exceptions to this rule and a City can be created by a Royal Charter. In the year 2000 a total of 39 British towns applied to become Cities for the Millennium under such a Royal Charter, and Doncaster was short listed as one of the favourites. In the end it lost out to Inverness, Brighton & Hove, and Wolverhampton. The population of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster at the last Census in 2001 was 290,000 making it the 15th largest population centre in the UK. Doncaster lies approximately 20 miles...

The Regent Hotel, Doncaster

Advantages: Fantastic rooms, friendly staff and Great food
Disadvantages: Limited Wifi reception

...The Regent Hotel is located in the heart of Doncaster and is very easily accessable by car or rail. I travelled by rail and it was just a short 10 minute walk through the town centre to the hotel. Check-in was a fantastic experience and it was all ready prior to arrival and there was no need to fill in my address etc as it was all done, it was just a case of 2 signatures and off to my room. The room i stayed in was a double room for single occupancy and the room was fantastic. It was spacous and very well decorated, and looked recently decorated. The en-suite bathroom was very clean with a very powerful shower over the bath. A range of goodies were available in the bathroom including shampoo and shower gel. the electrical fittings in the room were a chrome finish which gave the room a nice feel, that coupled with a huge double bed...

Danum Hotel Doncaster

Advantages: Good location and easy to get to
Disadvantages: Poor wifi reception and pricey dinner

...would be repaired, he couldn't give me an answer or seemed bothered that it wasn't available. However you can still access the internet via the wall sockets in the room. If you are after a double room at the hotel the best ones that i have stayed in are 224 and 219. 224 is very modern looking and seems to have been recently refurbished and also has a fridge in the room for your use. The downside of this room is that every floorboard squeaks when you walk on it!! 219 is a comfy room looking out on the back of the hotel so isn't affected by the noise of the pubs and clubs kicking out on a Tue and Thu night. Contact details for the Danum are: Tel: 01302 342261 Fax: 01302 329034 Address: High Street Doncaster DN1 1DN E-mail: info@danumhotel.com Please also note that the e-mail bounces back due to there inbox being full...

Doncaster, A jewel in the crown of the north

Advantages: Good Road and Rail Links
Disadvantages: Far too many to list

...Doncaster, well where can you start with Doncaster, I’ve lived here on and off for the last 24 years. So I guess you could call it my home. Doncaster is an old town, the Romans passed through here right through the town centre. The Town its self has lots of history in it, there are a number of old buildings (some listed) and some nice architecture, (however its disappearing fast as Doncaster council in their wisdom seem to be pulling down any buildings made before the 1960’s). Having said that the council did recently rescue the Old Corn exchange building after a fire struck it. Which leads me onto some of the things Doncaster has to offer. Contrary to what you hear on TV, when Doncaster is the but of many comedian’s joke, The Town is actually an old market town foremost and just happened to have a lot...
