Doom 3

Advantages: Great graphics edge of your seat action
Disadvantages: You have to have the light on its so scary

...suroundings, for instance you can make out what an object is from a dictance weather it be a fire extinguisher on the wall or a 14ft monster. The game was very addictive as i was eager to find out the next steps i had to take in completing the game, the story line is not bad and theres always monsters around the corner trying to stop you in your tracks so the action is always there! The game boasts some awsome weapons with the good old chain gun being my favourite you can also get a soul cube which is devistatingly powerful once powered up as i tears the enemy from inside out! Doom3 is not that difficult realy, I played on normal difficulty and found some enemies pretty basic even in higher levels such as skeletons, 6ft mutants and a few more only need 1 blast from the shotgun and they are dead! To Doom or not to Doom

Advantages: Excellent graphics, great atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not a real Doom game

...This is the long awaited continuation to the Doom saga and for those of you who don?t know Doom let me start by refreshing you. Doom is a FPS (First Person Shooter) where you are a marine who is all alone battling the forces of Hell, you don?t battle them using crosses and holy water, you use guns, missiles and sometimes your bare fists (or a chainsaw). Advantages: Amazing graphics, sound and atmosphere.
Disadvantages: Little gameplay or originality.

They were great pioneers in many areas such as adult game content, distribution by shareware (i.e. you got the first few levels free as a trial and had to pay for the rest), online multiplayer gaming and the best examples at the time of what was a new genre of gaming ? first person shooters (FPS). id were the first real pioneers of the FPS genre with their Doom games (and the associated game engine that went along with it) and then with the first real 3D game engine with Quake. Advantages: Scarey monsters

...When I look back at my gaming pedegree I see that I have had the fortune to witness some ground breaking technology in both software and hardware. Every now and then a game comes along that changes the way the industry works. It sets a new benchmark that others have to scale purely to be mentioned in the same breath. Doom was one such game. For its time it revoluitonised the way FPS games played out. Its sequal had a massive buzz around its launch and I can remember eagerly awaiting my first play on a P133. We jump a far few years forward to Doom 3. This is a title that had the history to make sure it was a game that was going to be bought no matter how bad it is. Advantages: Creepy - Atmospheric - Great GFX and FX
Disadvantages: Linear - No plot - A one armed marine with no gaffer tape

...ID games oozes quality don't they. Well don't they??? From the moment you slip the disk into your drive your anticipation is growing. Your 5.1 speakers are cranked up to room shaking point and you get ready to experience Doom3. Your brand new GFX card is champing at the bit ready to be tested to breaking point. Eagerly you click your Doom3 desktop icon and patiently wait for one of the most anticipated games of all time to load up. Suddenly the Doom 3 theme tune tears your ears from your head and your ready to begin. Go!!!!!!! You once again take control of the one of the hardest nuts in the UAC marine corp. Upon your arrival by drop ship you enter the mars facility totally unaware of whats going on. Head inside and to the briefing, where the premise of recent events unravels by talking to the many personel that inhabit the facility...

- That's one Doomed space-marine! (Duke Nukem)

Advantages: Ambiance. Creatures. Physics. Graphics. Ambiant sounds.
Disadvantages: Weapon sounds. The clichéd space-marine look.

.... Doom 3 is exceedingly faithful to the original 1993 game. Is that a good thing? YES. Why? Because Doom is a concept; a very specific one too. Many people will tell you that this game is a brainless FPS where all you are required to do is point at something and shoot. Well, they would be right of course... but they are missing the point. The original game was an "ambient" FPS: you would feel claustrophobic, disorientated... and scared by 2D-sprite demons. Doom worked so well because of it's simple concept and left room for your imagination to expand upon the bad graphics. Ironically, most modern games do not provide any similar excitement. Doom 3 is a strictly remodelled Doom. That being said the story is as pathetic as in the old game. But hold on... Honestly, do you really think that a game featuring a marine killing demons...

Advantages: Graphics are v.nice, Fulfills its title, Good Spook Factor
Disadvantages: Jumpy, Repetitive and not really original.

...Well I was, until I played it for a couple of days and got bored! Quick insight into the story: ------------------------------------------ Doom 3, set in the future on the planet Mars, is based around the story of you, a soldier, who was sent on a routine mission to find a scientist who had gone missing, and of course by the time you've found him all hell has broken loose and you find yourself being stormed by aliens, monsters, zombies etc. etc. and so your battle to survive begins as you struggle to get yourself to safety and find out whats actually going on and why. And so you can see already it sounds absolutely thrilling and never before seen...not.
