Dorset County Hospital
Advantages: Friendly, Efficient, Very Clean
Disadvantages: None, apart from waiting time
...I am at present resting at home after an operation on my left shoulder, made necessary after a clumsy fall that compressed the shoulder joint.
After a regimen of physiotherapy and steroids it was deemed that an operation called a subacromial decompression was arranged and took place at the orthopaedic unit of the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, Dorset.
I was given a choice of three hospitals, in line with the government's policy of offering a choice and I feel that I made the correct decision.
The choices on the list were The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital, Poole General Hospital and the Dorset county.
Bournemouth was too far away, Poole is not a very nice hospital so I was left with Dorchester .
First Impressions
Once the appointment for surgery was made I was asked to attend a Anaesthesia Pre...

Dinosaurland in Dorset
Advantages: Preserving a Phenomena. Tourism. International Recognition
Disadvantages: None
...What a Century!
*******************
In 1821 Mary Anning discovered the first complete ichthyosaurus while wading and searching for fossils under the dangerous, crumbling cliffs in her home town of Lyme Regis in West Dorset, on the coast of South West England. What would this proud, uneducated working class woman think of the latest news?
In 1834, the six men now known as The Tolpuddle Martyrs, the founders of the Trade Union movement, were found guilty of Mutiny in the County Court of Dorchester, the County town of Dorset, and sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia. What would these Dorset farm labourers who altered the social structure in England, think of the latest news?
In 1840 Thomas Hardy the Dorset author was born, yet to write his world famous classical literature to include ‘Far From the Madding...

Breakfast from Dorset
Advantages: It is exactly as it says on the box.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive.
...I as really can't stand milk breakfast can be a bit of an issue with me. Just the thought of cereal going soggy in a bowl full of milk just churns my stomach. Therefore I just usually give breakfast a miss. That is until I discovered Dorset Cereals Really Nutty Muesli.
Whilst cat sitting for the parents the other week, I discovered a box of the said muesli in mum's kitchen cupboard. It really caught my eye because the packaging is so different. The cereal comes in a terracotta coloured cardboard box with a design cut out on the front that resembles an ear of corn that is backed with clear plastic. On the front it states 750g of unadulterated breakfast pleasure. Through the plastic windows you can see the museli. It looked so good (an I will come on to why in a mo), that I decided just to try a handful. Oh, what heaven, its...

THE Great Dorset Steam Fair
Advantages: Plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Does require a lot of walking
...The Annual Great Dorset Steam Fair, has been running since 1968 at Tarrant Hinton in Dorset, and for five days each year is the premier tourist attraction in the county.
The Fair has grown to be one of Europe's biggest outdoor shows, covering as it does 600 acres of farmer's fields in Dorset. It is difficult to convey just how big the fair has grown to, but the first glimpse of the site always astounds me as to how much land is taken up. There is a preconception that the fair is purely for those interested in steam power, but it is much more than that. The most common exhibits are the steam traction engines, tractors and farm engines, many of which undertake the purpose they were built for in the showground. There are also scores of musical attractions in the form of fairgorund organs run from steam.
Aside from these core activities...

Dorset,A Greatly Underated County
Advantages: Unspoilt. Traditional. A Microcosm of England. Compact
Disadvantages: Very few.
...Dorset is I think one of the greatly under-rated counties of England. A lot of people going to the South West for their holidays target Devon and Cornwall - and both are delightful-but at best hurry through Dorset. Yet this county has a great deal to offer the visitor ranging from typically English, rustic, villages, to the sophistication of Bournemouth, the elegance of Poole, the delights of Georgian Weymouth, the beauty of the coastline and the joys of small towns such as Bridport, Dorchester and Lyme Regis. It is not only very compact but in many ways an almost perfect microcosm of England.
Literary buffs will find Dorset is no backwater for this is Hardy country and it was the home for part of his life of T.E.Lawrence.Dorset also has its place in agrarian history as the Tolpuddle Martyrs serve to remind us.

Equipment & Plant Hire in West Dorset.
Advantages: Warm friendly casual service
Disadvantages: Not too easy to find on your first visit. A larger sign would be useful.
...I live in the Bridport area and have used Evans on several occasions in preference to other local competitors, Bradfords and Fowler Tool Hire.
Whilst not finding the others unfriendly, Evans has its own brand of Dorset charm and is cheaper than the others.
Obviously this review will have little interest to those living outside this catchment area which I would guess to be from west of Weymouth up around the many little towns and villages to the north, to Beaminster and round down to Lyme Regis.
No doubt if you wanted something big for a long period it would be worth travelling as bit further, if only for the savings to be made.
I have hired a variety of accessories such as tile cutters, thumpers and the like.
I first went there years ago as it was the only reliable source of "pink"
diesel for my fishing boat, which they...

"Dorset is bootiful..."
Advantages: Beautiful scenery, lots of things to interest anyone & everyone
Disadvantages: Can get crowded in the summer months
..."...wherever you go" so the song goes, and whoever wrote it wasn't wrong!
I've spent many very happy holidays in Dorset, from a small child to present (early twenties) when I returned recently for a girlie holiday with my closest friends.
Each time I've stayed at Durdle Door Campsite - with my parents, we rented a caravan on-site for the week, but on more recent trips, I've camped there (to keep costs down!!)
The campsite itself is excellent - very clean & tidy, with a shop for basic supplies, a bar/restaurant which serves good, reasonably priced food, and also a takeaway hatch for fish & chip suppers! The facilities might not include all the activities that other campsites do, but all the necessities are there (including a great play area for kids) and these are all well though out and looked after.
The site is on a cliff top...

Great Dorset Steam Fair
Advantages: Excellent atmosphere
Disadvantages: Entrance price
...Great Dorset Steam fair is off to a flying start again this year, Traction Engines, Market Stalls, Craft Fayre, exhibitors of all kinds of machinery, fair ground, horses and displays. A really good day out for all the family.
The fair finishes on Sunday 3rd September so better get there fast, a really good day out, so much to see and do.
The atmosphere at the show is very nice and people are very helpful.
The entrance price is quite high at £10.00 but it is well worth it.
Night life - mainly around the fairground and beer tents, excellent rides, good food at the pig roast, dancing girls, lots of people.
Good for both adults and children, plus half price tickets if you get there after 5pm.
A really good event, well worth a visit....

mediauk.com
Advantages: A decent media website...
Disadvantages: ...but no better than that
...Anyone looking for a job in the media, or even an insight into the big wide world of it, could do much worse than look here to begin with - mediauk.com.
Operating since 1994, it lists current available jobs in radio, tv and print media, recent news articles on all these forms of media and a discussion board. Now being a graduate in a degree of this field of work, the jobs board has been an interest to me for quite a while...but don't expect to find work instantly. Anything but. Copious numbers of people view these adverts (you can see how many exactly in the job listings), but don't let that deter you of course - if you're good and experienced enough then you'll come across the job for you eventually.
The jobs listed usually just contain a small job description and contact details for where to send your cover letter and CV, but...

dictionary.com
Advantages: Good free service
Disadvantages: Too many adverts & pop-ups
...Dictionary.com?! Dictionary.com?! Seriously?! Why, yes, something that seems so simply and basic has it's place on the World Wide Web (yes, I'm aware of the irony!), but fear not...it's not as basic as it seems!
Rather than just typing in a word to discover its definition, dictionary.com does provide a far greater service. Since it's launch way back in 1995 (were websites even around then?!), it's one of the world's most popular services, as naturally many people will just type in 'dictionary.com' into their browser if they need to find the definition of a word...even if they don't know the website exists, it makes sense to have a crack at it!
The website does provide a thesaurus option, translator and encyclopaedia...for anyone even contemplating steering away from Wikipedia, God forbid! But there are other quirks to the website...
