...I work for a UPVC manufacturing firm, and just thought I would give any potential buyer some general tips to look out for when thinking of buying any UPVC windows and doors. When a sales representative comes to your house, he should have a sample window frame with him, I would recommend you ask to have alook at this before you buy it, so you no exactly what you are getting, once the windows have been fitted there is no turning back. A few points:- Make sure the window is sturdy and ask what is in the middle on the frame, (the part you can't see) you would be expecting on a standard window for this to be either steel or some sort of metal internally. Some companies only put plastic in the middle. They you need to one the sample window to see what the opening mechanism is like, e,g it is study and easy to open or is it stiff...

Disadvantages: Unscrupulous DG companies

REMEMBER - UPVC frames have no structural integrity. My local Housing Association lost £millions during a double glazing program where lintels were not replaced and metal framed bay complexes (providing structural integrity) were replaced with UPVC complexes - many of which subsequently collapsed. 7. Accurate measurements will be taken by a surveyor not the salesman. If at any time during instyallation something does not fit BEWARE. - Bodgets do not work. Demand the right sized unitis fitted. 8. Avoid thermal bridging around the window frames by insisting on a thermal quality expanding foam. 9. Avoid units externally with fixtings (bolts) hidden behind plastic strips...

...Lancashire Double Glazing,...............They were very helpful,right from the start,excelent phone maner,the sales rep came round and give us a quto on the spot with no hasle just a good repour, he was happy to leave us to think about the price,and that he would leave it for us to contact him,,,,,with a go ahead........we liked this becacuse it did,nt put us under any pressure on the spot. the fitters were very nice also,with lots of clean dust sheets placed in the hall way and in each room that they worked in,,,,,the job was so tidy that when they had finished the house looked new with the frames been cleaned and also the glass had been clean,as well... i would recomend Lancashire Double Glazing with no worries at all.....

In-Vision Is Tops For Double Glazing

...In August we finally decided to get double glazing fitted. Unfortunately, that's where the problem started. Who do we get to carry out the work? There are never ending reports of numerous cowboys out there who can't wait to rip you off. Likewise, even the so-called reputable companies sometimes did not live up to their promises. After several months of research we decided to go with a local company called In-Vision who are based in the Edinburgh area. They came recommended by a friend and given that she is REALLY fussy, it seemed like a good bet. The salesman arrived, did his measurements, sat down and put together a price - £4000, which was bang on budget, but as you no doubt know, these quotes are usually OTT so there is room for negotiation. So after a bit of haggling we managed to get the quote down to £3700 for 6 windows...

...XP is finally here. Microsoft's stable and feature packed Operating System, that people said could never be acheived, has been on all of my systems since release. I've had not one crash. I've had not one single troubling incident. A word on compatibility: If you feel you may have compatibility problems with XP, an upgrade to XP may be better than a full installation. For some reason, one I can't comprehend in the slightest, drivers in upgrades seem to work as they are, whereas they may need to be updated if installed after a new installation of XP. The only problem with this method, is that upgrades tend to slow down the system and an upgrade to XP won't run as fast as a new install will. Again, a phenomenon I'm not qualified to explain. Windows XP also works so much better with the standard day-by-day features that it makes...

From the first initial contact with one of their rep I made it very clear that I was interested, but that I would not consider changing my windows for another 6 months or so. I was told that did not matter and someone came to measure the windows and give me a quote. I took over three hours for the measuring to be completed and I had to endure a lenghty discussion about the fantastic quality of the product. Finally, I was asked how much I thought the windows would cost me. I had already done some research on various web sites and I according to the dimensions keyed in I had obtained a cost of anything from £5,500 to £10,000. ...i have just had new windows, doors , roof soffits and fascias installed by diamondseal. i cannot praise this firm highly enough.i originally got a quote from safestyle uk and had a nightmare with them. the following day the diamondseal rep called. he was polite, helpful, technically very knowledeable and not in the least bit pushy. he helped us pick the exact designs we wanted, and gave us a quote that was within £30 of safestyles (in spite of safestyle adverts saying you buy one you get one free....) he took a 10% deposit on the work, the surveyor came out very quickly and when booked to do so.we paid nothing for the surveyor. 2 weeks later they phoned to say the work was ready to install. they did the lot in 2 and a half days. the workmen were polite and very hardworking. they made very little mess and they even cleaned that up...

Coldseal windows - an insider's opinion

Advantages: Good quality product, long guarantee
Disadvantages: service not quite up to scratch

...Having used to work as a 'telecanvasser' for Coldseal for a year and a half, I am probably in quite a good position to comment on not only their product but also their service and guarantees. To be honest, I couldn't mention one national window company that, in my opinion, would not do anything they can to get people's business. What I will say is that Coldseal are one of the best of a bad situation. The new window that Coldseal have just launched is an outstanding product. However, it is almost identical to a window which EYG brought out over a year and a half a go. This product is called 'the clawlock system'. The black seal that surrounds most UPVC double-glazing has been scrapped and replaced with an all-white scalloped lip, thus improving the look and reliability of the window. There are four separate locking systems...

...Lancashire Double Glazing - what a bunch of cowboys!! This is a long story so I'll try to cut it short. To start off with the fitters were 2 hours late and when they arrived thay had lost a window ledge so dissapeared for another 2 hours to try to find it! When the job had been done, upon closer inspection of the windows, there were gaps and chips all over. We contacted the fitters to complain and they said they'd send someone round, which they did after about 4 weeks. He replaced some of the damaged beeding - but it still wasn't right - the window ledge was chipped and there were still gaps. The ever so nice salesman that originally visited us - refused to help although he had promised to get involved if things weren't acceptable. The whole farce went on for about 12 weeks - in the end we moved house - the windown still haven...

I want to buy windows not a house!

Advantages: They are long lasting
Disadvantages: plonkers who think they are salespeople

...and we had the main works done and moved in last year, still with boarded up windows, smashed windows and no kitchen as they also broke that. So you would not think it would be so hard to get a quote for Double Glazing. I know what I am after but have not got a clue how much it will cost. I searched all the papers and there are numerous offers 7 windows for £1500 and there are plenty of them. However whilst I am sure they are very nice, I find this a bit too cheap and whilst not been a snob, my neighbours front and back went with two well known companies and opted for these white upvc ones which will do them but not for me. I do not want finance I am already half the way to saving for them and now need a quote somewhere in the region of £6,000 or under. I want double glazing as it will be nice and warm and draft free. I am weary...
