Layered with surprises and excitement!

Advantages: Exciting plot, great acting, scenic shots
Disadvantages: Can be violent, title still makes no sense to me

...I went to stay with my mum and dad recently, and on our return, I pinched a huge pile of DVD's from their house and put them in order of watchability. Layer Cake came right at the top as I missed on the tele last month, and I was annoyed, so we decided to watch it last night, and I am glad that we decided to watch this one! Please note for the purposes of this review, I will call the main character X as he is never given a name in the film. The main story follows the life of an affulent drug dealer, X, who has both a proper job as an estate agent but is a drug dealer on the side. He does not get involved with his clients or the drug use, he merely sells the drugs on. Disadvantages: predictable in parts

Welcome To The Layer Cake Son

Advantages: Excellent cast and crew that makes it a very real movie. Not in the slapstick Cockney Geezer mould of Snatch and Lock Stock
Disadvantages: A little dark in places that a few people might find disturbing, slows down a little now and again but not majorly

Layer Cake is highly derivative but still fun

Advantages: Has a great director, and a brilliant performance from its leading man
Disadvantages: Is unoriginal, and unevenly scripted

...LAYER CAKE marks the directorial debut of Mathew Vaughn, the producer of LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS and SNATCH, which is probably a statement that will either turn you on or off to the film completely. So if it's the case that you are now shaking your head in disgust, then I cant say I blame you really. The Cockney gangster thing is already getting old, but at least Vaughn has tried to stray away from the tone of the said Guy Ritchie films by casting a somewhat more serious atmosphere over the whole thing. It's just too bad that he uses a script which is pretty much completely built on cliché's and has that kind of playful yet somehow completely wooden dialogue that may sound totally English on paper but when delivered on screen sounds like nothing anyone with an ounce of sanity would actually be caught saying in real life...
