Calais Hotel Meurice
Advantages: Central location but quiet, elegant, luxurious
Disadvantages: Central location but not too easy to find
...many people are inside. If the place is heaving with locals then it will surely be good, if it is empty avoid it. The Hotel du Centre was packed but Madame managed to find us a table after a five minute wait, and as you do in France, we enjoyed talking about all and sundry in French and English to our neighbours on an adjoining table, whilst enjoying some excellent seafood.
None of this would have taken place but for the fact that we were able to take advantage of a very generous offer from P & O Ferries that allowed us to take our car from Dover to Calais by car ferry for £26 each way with no specified return date.
Let me make one important point here for anyone who worries about being seasick. These modern ferries nowadays are state of the art in avoiding rock and roll!! I am not the best sailor in the world but could survive...

Dover Museum
Advantages: free entrance for locals, nice Bronze Age Boat on display
Disadvantages: None
...Location
Dover Museum is centrally located in the market square area of Dover town and is within walking distance to the train and bus stations.
Prices
Admission is free to local residents, although you do need to prove that you live in Dover by showing a document such as a bank statement or utility bill. Adults who do not reside in Dover will be charged two pound fifty and children are OAPs are charged one pound fifty.
The Museum
Dover Museum was first opened in 1836. The museum is spread across three floors. Just inside the entrance, is the history exhibit which traces the history of Dover from the Stone Age to the time of the Saxons.
Here you can view the Bronze Age boat which is believed to be the worlds oldest known sea going boat.
Here you can also view the array of Saxon jewellery, which is kindly borrowed from...

Dover Leisure Centre
Advantages: You don't need to be a member to use the facilities
Disadvantages: Certain parts may be shut due to private events
...Living in Dover means that we don't have too many facilities. Dover Leisure Centre is about the only sporting facility in Dover other than the football and rugby pitches.
Location
Dover Leisure Centre is located on Townwall Street in Dover which is pretty much on the seafront and within walking distance to the Port of Dover. It is also within walking distance of Dover town, Dover Priory Station and Pencester bus station.
Facilities
There are two swimming pools at Dover Leisure Centre. There is a main swimming pool which is 25 metres and also a learner / childrens pool. In the main pool, there are two lanes of the swimming pool which are sectioned off to create one slow, and one fast swimming lane.
The rest of the pool is then literally just open water where people can swim at their own leisure.
The smaller pool is much...

Booze Cruise to Calais
Advantages: cheap, fun, quick.
Disadvantages: None! We are after all talking about cheap booze and fags!
...we were and got off at Exit 36. It couldn’t have been easier. When we arrived we found that cigs were not much different from on the ferry, tobacco is though so if you want that it’s worth the extra drive. I didn’t mind it was my way of having a little peak round France and liking what I saw. The drive was lovely, greenery everywhere and the sun was shining, can’t wait for my next holiday, France it will be… by ferry!

Club lounge on board Dover - Calais
Advantages: Comfy, relaxing, hassle-free.
Disadvantages: Costs extra.
...of course priced extra, £12 for the priority loading and £24 for the club lounge or £30 for both. We went for both, both ways and boy was it a good decision. The costs were for both of us and the website includes the cost as per group. Not sure how large a group they would allow under one cost as there were only two of us traveling.
We were first on and first off the ferry at Dover and Calais. We checked in very quickly and were given a priority boarding card to hang from the mirror and directed to our priority waiting lane. We had time to get a coffee and danish at the cafe next to the loading area and also popped into W H Smith's for last minute stuff.
Although putting a brave face on it I was a bit apprehensive as loads of cars followed us on to the ferry. I had this nightmare thought that I would go the wrong way, everyone would follow...

Oh la la the best in Calais by far
Advantages: Relaxing hotel, easy to get to
Disadvantages: maybe a little pricey
...I had to travel to Germany, in fact it was the furthest part of the old West Germany you could get to, so I needed to break my journey (after travelling from the West Country), just coming out of the Channel Tunnel, Calais seemed a good place to stop off over night.
*** Where is it ***
The Holiday Inn "Calais - Nord" is located just out of the centre of Calais near the car ferry port. So it is very convenient for both the Channel Tunnel and the ferry ports. It took me about 10 minutes to drive there from the Channel Tunnel.
The hotel is located at
6/8/10 Boulevard des Allies
62100 Calais

Dover Priory Train Station
Advantages: recently refurbished, nice cafe
Disadvantages: in a grotty area of Dover town
...History
Dover Priory Train Station was first opened on 22 July 1861. It was originally called Dover Town but was renamed Dover Priory in 1863. The name Dover Priory was taken from the remains of St Martins Priory which was situated close to the station. Dover Priory Train Station suffered greatly during the war and was actually the first place in Dover that was bombed.
Dover Priory
Dover Priory is the only train station in Dover and is located about a 5 minute walk from the town centre of Dover. There is a free shuttle bus which runs from the train station to Dover Docks.
In August 2006 Dover Priory train station was renovated. These renovations included the refurbishment of the station building itself, the booking hall and the toilet facilities. CCTV cameras were installed which now cover the platforms, waiting areas and ticket...

Hoverspeed Dover - Calais. Short and Sharp!
Advantages: Very fast, very cheap, excellent service
Disadvantages: Difficult to hold onto your breakfast if at all rough
...Having used the services of Hoverspeed on the Dover - Calais route several times in the last year, I decided to add my thoughts after reading some of the older reviews, just to bring potential travellers up to date.
Hoverspeed operate a few other routes, which I have not used - this review will only cover the Dover/Calais route.
Travelling between the UK and the Continent gives you a huge amount of choice, from cut-price airlines to traditional ferries and speedy catamarans or the Channel Tunnel.
Having hunted around for the lowest cost to get 6 people to a cottage in deepest rural France, or 5 people across to Holland to visit relatives, I finally decided to use Hoverspeed. Not necessarily the fastest route for us due to the long journey from our home in the Midlands, and again the other side of the Channel, but definitely...

Dover Gateway to England
Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character
...Bounded on one side by the Channel coastline and the famous White Cliffs,Dover in Kent is very much a maritime town. Throughout the ages this surprisingly small town has been the gateway into England from Continental Europe.
For many Britons heading for holidays in Europe,Dover is the place to hurry through in order to board the ferry or hovercraft at the two passenger docks. Few have the time or even the inclination to explore the town.
The well known landmarks of the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port.
You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site.
The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes...

Dancing in Dover Street
Advantages: Good food and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can be pricey
...This is the second year in a row my company Christmas Party has been held here, at the Dover Street Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant is on Dover Street (surprise, surprise!) in Mayfair, not far from Green Park tube station.
Lucky me, the meal and drinks were all paid for! However the a la Carte menu, Party menus and wine lists, with prices, are available in pdf format on their website (although we had neither of these two party menus shown) - http://www.doverst.co.uk/food.php. It would appear if you are dining a la Carte then expect to pay up to £12 for a starter (Foie Gras, you evil people), but usually they come in at about £8-9.00. Mains start at £13.95 for the two vegetarian options, going up to £21.95 for a steak. House wines are £14.50 a bottle and go up to silly money for the top end stuff.
The Atmosphere
