Our Castle for Keeps

Advantages: Enjoyable day out, easy to get too, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Steep hills and the weather needs to be good

...As I live in the Town of Dover Kent I thought I would write a review on the castle and how it has become the Stronghold of England. It does make you instantly think of the White Cliffs, and cross Channel ferries ,but i feel the jewel of the town of Dover and personnally England is the magnificent Dover castle. Getting To The Castle. Obviously the castle is in Kent as I stated above and any further east in the south of England you would be in the Channel! The castle can be reached both from the A2 motorway and the M20 Motorway which are the main vein of motorways in Kent. It is very well signposted, and of course as its set on the Eastern hills of Dover can be seen upon approach into Dover via both these motorways. On foot, from the train Station or bus station it again is very well signposted and there is a bus which runs past...

Dover Castle - Worth A Visit

Advantages: Excellent condition castle, excellent museum
Disadvantages: It is in Dover

...It would be interesting to see how the opening of the Channel tunnel has influenced attendance figures at Dover Castle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries. That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle. Dover Castle is similar in size and feel to Windsor Castle and the undulating ground and superb central area add to the impression. Set high above the white cliffs Dover castle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner...

BRITAIN'S FRONT LINE FORTRESS

Advantages: A Full Day Out. Educational. Interesting. Centuries of History. The Views
Disadvantages: Go early if you want to take an underground tour.

...If you are anything like me, then probably, the word "Dover" conjures up images of White Cliffs, seagulls and maybe even Dame Vera Lynne and Blue Birds. Whilst I have seen 50% of these images in Dover in reality, the Blue Birds and Dame Vera have so far eluded me. If, like us, you are regular travellers to the continent via Dover, then you cannot have failed to have seen Dover Castle perched up high above the White Cliffs overlooking the town to the west and port to the due south. I wonder how many of you have actually visited Dover Castle as a tourist attraction though?.. ?..never mind, join us then, if you will on a voyage of discovery of one of the worlds' longest lasting, and probably, this countries last fully functioning castle. As with many of the other sites that I have been writing about over the last several months...

Review of Dover Castle

1000 years of English History

Advantages: More history than you can point a spear at
Disadvantages: Might be better to visit nearer the summer season

...Over the years, I've lost count of the number of times I've passed through Dover on my way to the continent. Passing through seemed to be the right thing to do, as it's perhaps not the most attractive of Kentish towns. DOVER is one of the busiest ports in England, which is not surprising as it's the closest point of the UK to mainland Europe. It's a bustling, transit town that at first glance has no real tourist attractions, and nothing to encourage the passing traveller to linger a while. But blank out the container ports, the Ro-Ro ferries and Hydro-foils queuing outside the harbours, and the juggernauts thundering down slip roads, and take a second look. High above the town, perched atop those famous white cliffs, and there sits a magnificent Norman castle which, by a strange quirk of fate, I'm about to describe to you...

Dover Museum

Advantages: free entrance for locals, nice Bronze Age Boat on display
Disadvantages: None

...Location Dover Museum is centrally located in the market square area of Dover town and is within walking distance to the train and bus stations. Prices Admission is free to local residents, although you do need to prove that you live in Dover by showing a document such as a bank statement or utility bill. Adults who do not reside in Dover will be charged two pound fifty and children are OAPs are charged one pound fifty. The Museum Dover Museum was first opened in 1836. The museum is spread across three floors. Just inside the entrance, is the history exhibit which traces the history of Dover from the Stone Age to the time of the Saxons. Here you can view the Bronze Age boat which is believed to be the worlds oldest known sea going boat. Here you can also view the array of Saxon jewellery, which is kindly borrowed from...

Dover Leisure Centre

Advantages: You don't need to be a member to use the facilities
Disadvantages: Certain parts may be shut due to private events

...Living in Dover means that we don't have too many facilities. Dover Leisure Centre is about the only sporting facility in Dover other than the football and rugby pitches. Location Dover Leisure Centre is located on Townwall Street in Dover which is pretty much on the seafront and within walking distance to the Port of Dover. It is also within walking distance of Dover town, Dover Priory Station and Pencester bus station. Facilities There are two swimming pools at Dover Leisure Centre. There is a main swimming pool which is 25 metres and also a learner / childrens pool. In the main pool, there are two lanes of the swimming pool which are sectioned off to create one slow, and one fast swimming lane. The rest of the pool is then literally just open water where people can swim at their own leisure. The smaller pool is much...

~ Caldicot Castle - Feast fit for a King ~

Advantages: Excellent food, Great sites, Good history, Nice staff
Disadvantages: none - apart from the one guy see review

...~ Feast fit for a King ~ Following my last review, last weekend was as you know my Nan?s birthday. As 70 is a special number she planned her birthday for the family to have a medieval weekend in Caldicot. She has been planning this for over a year so I know it was going to be a brilliant evening. The main part of her birthday was to go to Caldicot Castle for a banquet. We all had medieval outfits where some were not as pleased to wear as others, but I think we all looked great. After we arrived at Brooklands Motel we got ready into our outfits and all met on the balcony for a toast. We then only had a five minute walk down the road to the castle, which the locals driving past thought was interesting. Twenty two people walking down the main road in Medieval gear. The men?s outfits were brilliant and we had a large mixture...

Dover Gateway to England

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character

...Bounded on one side by the Channel coastline and the famous White Cliffs,Dover in Kent is very much a maritime town. Throughout the ages this surprisingly small town has been the gateway into England from Continental Europe. For many Britons heading for holidays in Europe,Dover is the place to hurry through in order to board the ferry or hovercraft at the two passenger docks. Few have the time or even the inclination to explore the town. The well known landmarks of the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port. You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site. The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes...

The King of Castles

Advantages: One of the most impressive historical buildings I have ever seen
Disadvantages: The fact that its not more widely known

...Carrickfergus Castle I grew up in the shadows of this impressive monument and it amazes me that it is not more widely known outside of the UK. The castle is the best preserved monument in the whole of Ireland and is stunning to look at from all angles. Location The castle is located in the town of Carrickfergus which is situated on the shores of Belfast Lough about 10 miles from Belfast. The castle can easily be reached from Belfast by car (pretty much a straight road), regular buses and trains. The castle is open all year round. Off season it is open 10-4 Monday to Sat and 2 - 4 on a Sunday and during the summer or peak months the opening hours are extended until 6pm daily. It costs £3 per adult and £1.50 for children/senior citizens. A family ticket costs £8. A brief history The history of the castle is fascinating...

Who's castle?

Advantages: Funny and entertaining
Disadvantages: They never win which is very frustrating

...Takeshi's castle is a Japanese game show which is very similar to Total Wipeout although it's very dated. The show starts out with 100 contestants who battle it out by running assault courses and participating in different challenges before faces the final challenge and being in with a chance of winning one million yen. The show is ridiculously hard and it does make the watcher wonder if they don't actually have the prize funds at the end. My favourite challenge throughout the show is where the contestant has to run through doors but some of the doors are glued shut so if they choose the wrong one then they end up crashing into it. Craig Charles narrates the UK version of the show and I have to say that he is very funny with some of the things he comes out with. He adds a whole new level to it and makes it all the more fun to...
