United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Remastered, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: A motley crew of British characters ride the 'San Ferry Ann' from Dover to the shores of Calais where they embark on a weekend of calamity. A campervan family led by Dad and Mum (David Lodge and Joan Sims) cause chaos from the moment they set their tires on the shore resulting in frequent run ins with the Gendarme. Lewd Grandad (Wilfred Brambell) finds his own misadventures with a newly acquainted friend, a crazy German ex-soldier (Ron Moody). Also aboard for the ride is a saucy hitchhiker (Barbara Windsor) who causes a few heads to turn including that of a fellow traveller (Ronnie Stevens) who pursues her affection with comic results. This film contains considerable footage shot on both the pre-war Compagnie du Nord, and the SNCF Region Nord. The pre-war footage was mainly filmed in 1932 by Englishman Jack Stretton-Ward covering a journey from Dover to Paris, and return, on the Fleche d'Or. Footage from 1947, filmed by Dutchman Albert G. Nymeyer, also covers the Gares du Nord and Bastille, plus a visit to Vitry test plant to see a 141R being put through its paces. Some supplementary footage was shot by Wilf Watters, and the final sequences of film shot at Calais in 1965, near the end of steam, were filmed by Hans van Engelen and Ton Pruissen. Calais Hotel Meurice
Advantages: Central location but quiet, elegant, luxurious
Disadvantages: Central location but not too easy to find
...neighbours on an adjoining table, whilst enjoying some excellent seafood.
None of this would have taken place but for the fact that we were able to take advantage of a very generous offer from P & O Ferries that allowed us to take our car from Dover to Calais by car ferry for £26 each way with no specified return date.
Let me make one important point here for anyone who worries about being seasick...

Dover Gateway to England
Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character
