Dr Who, an Idiot's guide

Advantages: A brilliant Sci-Fi series, a real classic
Disadvantages: They haven't made any new episode since 1989

...The all new doctor who is finally with us but since it is so long since the original seires was put into suspended animation in 1989 there might be some of you out there who don't know what Doctor Who is all about. So here is my 'Idiot's Guide' to the show?. Doctor Who was originally conceived, as a children's educational programme but became the world's longest-running sci-fi TV programme, spin-off include, books films and radio plays. The first episode was shown in 1963 and after finishing in 1989 apart from an ill-fated US movie version in 1996) the BBC finally saw sense and produced a new series in 2005. WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Well it's about a time traveller known as the Doctor (nobody actually ever calls him Dr Who?) and the adventures he and his many companions over the years have had in space and time. At first the idea was...

Dr Who?

Advantages: Breathless plot
Disadvantages: One of a kind

...What would Dr Who be like if it could separate itself from its ‘children’s’ TV image and grow up? Read this and find out. Accomplished British horror novelist Mark Morris sets his sights on revamping the 5th Dr’s image, taking Peter Davison’s incarnation to extremes that would have induced strokes in the BBC board of governors had this story ever come to screen. At first, things don’t seem that much different from any other Dr Who novel plodding the usual course: The TARDIS arrives in a quiet seaside town in the 70’s. The locals start behaving strangely, and trouble is swift in spoiling the Dr’s plans for a holiday with Tegan and Turlough. But in this story the ‘odd behaviour’ involves a boat full of horribly mutilated fishermen (rendered in exquisite detail), and the townsfolk turning on each other, sprouting quills and transforming in...

Dr Who - A bit different than the others

Advantages: A page turner.
Disadvantages: You will only read it the once

...: ~~~~~~~ This is like most Dr Who books in the category of "Beach book", you can pick it up, put it down or fall asleep and next time you delve into the story there will be no problem picking up the thread. Having said that, the ending was a bit different than most of the other Dr Who novels I've read. Aimed at a readership of 6 to 16, the dialogue is clear, concise, uncontroversial and bland. It's Dr Who so it's not meant to be brain stretching! It's a fun read and you will enjoy it, but you will not bother to read it again. Greg....

Who's Your Favourite - Question Mark

Advantages: Ability to travel through time and space
Disadvantages: No longer in production

...You can tell a lot about a person if you know who their favourite Doctor Who is. Okay, maybe you can’t actually tell that much - but you can probably get a reasonable guess at their age range. However, were you to then quiz them as to which of the good Doctor’s many assistants they fancied/hated most and which of the cavalcade of monsters were the scariest you would soon learn enough about them to judge their character. I feel that such an approach could be used to replace expensive and lengthy psychometric testing as part of the selection process in job interviews. For those of you, and there must be some, who either don’t know who Dr. Who is or perhaps have heard of this programme without ever having seen it, Dr. Who is a time lord who, using his time machine, has the ability to travel through space and time. He...

Brilliant day out for Dr Who fans

Advantages: Fun, in a good location (in free large museum)
Disadvantages: Have seen it all in a short time, cost may deter some.

...I took a group of 5 children, all Dr Who fans, here for my daughters 8th birthday. They were all aged 4-10 and were accompanied by my husband and I, also Dr Who fans! The 4 year old was free, and for the 6 of us, it cost around £31 booked through ticketmaster. The exhibition is actually inside the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on Liverpool Road. We were fast tracked through the queue which was already quite big at 10am. (I would arrive early as the car park gets filled quickly!) Parking is £5. There are good train and bus services to Manchester if travelling this way. By Train: Nearest railway station - Deansgate. By Tram: Nearest Metrolink (tram) station - GMex. The exhibition is open 10am-5pm and is on until November 2007. The exhibition itself was very good. You would really need to be a fan to get your moneysworth...

Diamond review  I Need Your German Soothing Touches? Dr?WHO?

Advantages: Muscle relaxing, moisurises and smells good.
Disadvantages: Pricey, can stain your clothes.

...Many people feel tired and frazzled especially these days whether at work, personal-family life or money wise. I am one of those people? I feel exhausted most days, worn out and under a lot of pressure for many reasons. I have gone through a hell lot of tension lately, leaving the UK, after spending a good few years there and leaving my close friends behind too. In addition . . . a few personal problems, changing home and a complete career switch! My parents were very supportive and tried their best to lift my spirit, calm me down and gave me all the their love and passion . . . furthermore I have to mention some supportive friends online as well (a couple on Ciao and Dooyoo) who really helped me and stood by me with their continuous love, help and advice. Still . . . working long hours, mostly behind my office desk, puts...

WHO'S BACK?

Advantages: Action packed, full of energy! Great to see the Doctor back on TV.
Disadvantages: Always going to be compared to the Who of the past.

...Before I begin, let me just point out that I requested this programme to be placed in the BBC1 category, but this has sadly not happened. For those of you who have been away visiting relatives on another planet, a new series of the Science Fiction drama series Dr Who has returned to our screens after a long absence. For those of you who are also unaware of what Dr Who is please allow me to give you a bit of brief background, before moving onto the 2005 series. ~~~A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME (TRAVEL). Dr Who began life on our television screens in November 1963 as a children's teatime science fiction serial. The show was basically about an alien from the planet Gallifrey (of course we don't know all about him to begin with) who travels through time and space in a machine known as the TARDIS (this name is an acronym of the words Time...

Dr Who...Back with A-Vengeance.

Advantages: Excellent adventure. Jason Connery!
Disadvantages: Only two parts!

...music soundtrack like the majority of Who releases. ~Vengeance on Varos stars both Martin Jarvis and Jason Connery. ~Peri, despite what her accent may imply, is from Surrey and not from America! Like other Dr Who DVDs, Vengeance on Varos has a good and varied selection of Special Features. ~~~SPECIAL FEATURES ~~~Commentary by Colin Baker (The Doctor), Nicola Bryant (Peri) & Nabil Shaban. (Sil) This is a really good feature! Unlike some of the commentaries, this one was really funny and not at all annoying. It was both informative and entertaining. All seem very at ease and take the Mickey out of themselves and each other. They don?t take it too seriously and sometimes they lose the point and get a bit carried away: Colin spends some of the time denying any accusations of violence made against him by the other cast...

Daleks, Cybermen, Slitheens - Guess Who?

Advantages: It's Dr Who!!
Disadvantages: Could prove costly

...I know I'm not alone when I say that I've always loved Dr Who and anything associated with the series. I've got all sorts of memorabilia from way back in time to the present day and I've always loved to collect. So, you can imagine my delight when the new series of Dr Who spawned a brand new collectable item for me! So, what exactly is the cause of all this excitement then? Well, it's two things really - a new magazine and a set of lovely, glossy trading come top trumps style cards. I'll briefly mention the magazine as this was launch of the trading card set. If you're looking for a good read, this isn't it!! Aimed very much at the younger reader, it consists of fold posters, fairly simple Dr Who based quizzes, games and articles on the making of the new series. Each issue has the rules for a new game(s) to play with your card...

The Best Dr Who Book I've Ever Read!

Advantages: Informative, fun, witty, warm book
Disadvantages: Long scripts can be a bit tiring to read

...I have been a fan of Doctor Who since I was a young child in the 1970s and over the years, I have read probably hundreds of Doctor Who related books - biographies, autobiographies, novelisations and so on. But I can honestly say, The Writer's Tale is the best Doctor Who book I have ever read! It is written by Russell T Davies (who has also written such famous television series as Queer as Folk and The Second Coming, as well as the new Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures) and Benjamin Cook. The project began as a series of emails between Russell and Ben and this format is the basis of The Writer's Tale. Ben wanted to find out more about the process of writing Doctor Who from the initial ideas through the casting process, script writing, filming and editing. This is the side few of us see. We sit there enjoying...
