The film of 2001
Review of Pearl Harbor DVD by
tiegan
Advantages: A great story, action packed, with that love thang for the girls (hehe)
Disadvantages: A little bit off in its reality check, but who cares
...Friday, for me, began like any other. Going through the motions at work, daydreaming in parts, sleeping in others. But generally boring. At 7.20pm that friday evening a few friends and I decided to go to the cinema. Pearl Harbor was showing at 7.30, so with some trepidation (after reports from the critics) we decided to go.
At 3 hours 23minutes long, I was really expecting a Titanic film of sorts. What I saw was an unrelenting exposé of what happened in 1942. Staring Ben Afleck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale and Directed by Michael Bay. Best friends Rafe (Affleck) and Danny (Harnett) have had a special relationship since they were children. But when they find themselves both attracted to nurse Evelyn (Beckensale) their friendship is strained. As this love triangle rages, so begins the violent chaos of the Japanese bombing of Pearl...

A Little Soppy In Stalingrad
Review of Enemy At The Gates DVD by
timmyotoole
Advantages: Some classic scenes, good special effects.
Disadvantages: Mis-marketed; as much a romance as a war film.
...The Battle of Stalingrad (1942-3) was perhaps the most horrific and arguably the most important in modern history. With so much action to re-live any film about the subject could be expected to be an instant success with vivid, unforgettable scenes of violence, terror and heroism. “Enemy At The Gates” appeared from the trailer as if it would be just that; a gripping depiction of the struggle that claimed so many lives and probably saved so many more. So far so good.
The film centres on the real-life sniper Vassily Ivanovich Zaitsev (played by Jude Law, who starred as playboy Dickie Greenleaf in “The Talented Mr. Ripley”), a peasant boy from the Urals who becomes the most famous of all Russian snipers, and whose heroism was made famous by the great Soviet propaganda machine, represented in the film by a Commissar...

Batlefield: Vietnam? Is it really worth it?
Review of Battlefield Vietnam (PC) by
makey
Advantages: Another fun game that can hold up to 64 players online
Disadvantages: It is exactly a duplicate of the original battlefield game
...This game is a stand alone version of Battlefield: 1942 so it doesn't require that you have the original version to play it.
I particularly didn't like this product that much as it is COMPLETELY the same as the original game 'Battlefield: 1942' the only difference is different location, time, weapons, but overall its the exact same game with replaced looks so instead of Germans you have Vietnamese soldiers.
The only thing that does make this game interesting is the amount of players it can have online, atleast up to 64, and the ability to ride any form of vehicles from gunships, u-boats, jeeps, tanks, airplanes, bombers, jets, APC's.
Even playing online gets abit boring, which causes a lack of enjoyment in online experience, and that you find alot of people playing online will not do objectives but merely hop into the vehicles...

BATTLEFIELD 1942
Review of Battlefield 1942 by
gunga
Advantages: you can use planes!!!
Disadvantages: poor graphics
...If you get this game i would recommend that even if you are not the best person in world at shooting (like me) you do not go on the easy mode. i went on the easy mode when i first got the game and i died i think twice in the whole game once when i walked into a bazooka. With B 1942 you can take over most vehicles. i never found the submarines though. (If anyone knows where the are mail me please =]. One of the bad things with B 1942 is that on the main menu the sound repeats itself over and over and over and it can get really anoying. My favouritevehicle was by far the plane although shooting down other planes is very hard if not impossible. I cannot comment on online play cause i think i had a broke disk because it always came up with an error when loading. (sorry) If you are going to buy this game i would recommend that you pay...

BF 1942
Review of Battlefield 1942 by
coopsta133
Advantages: Replayable, multiplayer gameplay is amzing
Disadvantages: outdated graphics
...Battlefield 1942 (BF1942) was a new revolution in games when it was released. It was fully multiplayer supportive yet had a great single player campaign. The best part about BF 1942 has to be its diversity in gameplay. You can take part in the game with several kits and characters to choose from and can use any weapon or vehicle found in the game.
Whether you are serious gamer or a gamer who just loves to have fun playing about then this is for you. You can have fun in jeeps or take out whole enemy squads in a tank.
Multiplayer gameplay is excellent. The game a few years old now, but it still receive loads of players in online intense battle. This shows that it has great replay value and you don't ever really get bored of it. It is somethign you wish to come back and play when you are bored.
The diversity in this game is incredible. You...

Who's the victim?
Review of A Place In The Sun DVD by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Gripping storyline
Disadvantages: Acting fairly mediocre
...Introduction
A Place in the Sun, directed by George Stevens, is a strangely gripping film that leaves you not sure whether to feel sorry for the main character or not. With names like Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters in the three main roles, it is not surprising that the film has attracted a lot of attention over the years, although I think that it is the strong storyline and cinematography, rather than the acting that stands out.
The director
George Stevens, one of the foremost directors of his time, was born in California in 1904 and died in 1975. He came from a family connected to the movies - his father was a bit actor in Citizen Kane, his brother was a drama critic and his sister became a screenwriter. George first became a cameraman and moved his way up to director. His most well-known films include Swing...

No duel between history and fiction.
Review of Enemy At The Gates DVD by
Quinion
Advantages: An absorbing plot of historical significance.
Disadvantages: Scarcely the most cheerful of films - but of course that isn't the intention.
...The relationship between film and history is certainly an uneasy one. Historians tend to bemoan the apparent butchering of their subject by Hollywood and its directors: "U-571" is proof of the necessity to horribly distort the truth about the past so as to appease the cinemagoers in terms of commercial viability. Jean-Jacques Annaud's Enemy at the Gates, however, finds a delightful compromise between these two spheres of fact and fiction, one which ought be noted by all prospective "historic" directors. What EATG offers is a wholesome and captivating adaptation of a supposedly true war story, yet the background horrors of the struggle for Stalingrad are as depressingly accurate a depiction of wartime's hellish nature as one will ever see.
It is 1942, and National Socialist Germany has taken the vast majority of Europe under its...

Best War Film Ever
Review of The Great Escape (Wide Screen) by
HSimpson
Advantages: See Opinion
Disadvantages: See Opinion
...Undoubtedly one of the most entertaining war movies ever made, this is based on the true story of 76 Allied soldiers who managed to escape from a German P.O.W. camp in 1942. Released in 1963, The Great Escape was one of the most successful blockbusters of its day and consolidated Steve McQueen's status as a film legend.
The story begins with the arrival of these Allied P.O.W.s at a newly constructed high-security camp. There, the German commandant informs them that their attempts at escape will prove futile and that they should co-operate with their captors until the war is over. Of course, they have absolutely no intention of doing so. Indeed, no sooner have they arrived than some of the more daring among them are trying to break out. It seems the Germans have rather foolishly incarcerated the best escape artists together in one place...

There goes the weekend.
Review of Battlefield 1942 by
Hernie
Advantages: Freedom to play using lots of different vechicles
Disadvantages: Really bad AI in the single player game.
...Battlefield 1942 is a world war two based 1st person shooter. It has a rousing soundtrack, great graphics, and is very addictive. The object of the game is to reduce the opponent teams points to zero, this can be do by killing members of the enemy team or by holding half or more of the stratigic points on the map also know as flags. This game really comes alive when played online. It is very easy to find a game online & it is very novice friendly unlike some other games. The sheer variety of vechicles is mind boggling (tanks, jeeps, planes, bombers, artillery, ships, submarines etc). The game is well balanced and you usually have great titanic battles with both sides advancing and retreating throughout. Victory usually only comes about when the 32 or so players on each side start to work as a team. The best part of winning in a team game...
