In Dubliners Fair City
Advantages: Good reading
Disadvantages: Using references a fair bit.
...Dubliners is a collection of short stories by James Joyce, 15 in all, written about the people and places in Dublin.(Oddly enough)
James Joyce (1882-1941) was born in Dublin to a middle class catholic family, whose social and economic status declined during Joyce's youth and adolescence.
"Dubliners" Joyce himself remarked, was meant to reveal the paralysis at the heart of Irish society. Each of the 15 stories deals with a different aspect of Dublin life. Joyce claimed there was a structural progression followed, from childhood to adolescence through to adulthood and private life. (Though this is disputed by some)
If you know little about Joyce, as I did, this is an excellent place to start finding out. I wasn't really going to bother, I thought until my wife collected enough i Points to afford a trip to Dublin.
The ferry we went...

In the footsteps of Joyce...apparently
Advantages: Reasonably priced in "standard", quieter location,
Disadvantages: Could have been cleaner, possible noise from DART
...While some women can?t resist a pair of gorgeous heels, I am unable to ignore an email from a budget airline. I just have to have a little look to see whether there are any bargains to be had. The latest one to jump off my screen was a return flight from my local airport to Dublin for just £12.00. As usual, I reached for the debit card and turned my mind to the accommodation question later. I?ve visited Dublin before, about ten years ago now, so I knew that there is plenty of accommodation in the city. What I didn?t know, however, was the in the intervening decade, Dublin has become horribly expensive (at least for Brits, Swedes probably think it?s a real bargain!). I visited Cork a couple of years back and found eating out quite pricey but I was not prepared at all for the fierce Dublin prices. Even a double room in a hostel was...

James Joyce - Ulysses - Not The Audio Book!
Advantages: Among the greatest novels ever written.
Disadvantages: You'd be best to take a few maps,
...this end most every paragraph contains one or several or several dozen asides and remarks and insinuations related to - well, just about everything. Botany, history, biology, theology, philosophy, art, literature... One can easily skim over these things and still carry-on their way, but why would you want to? The richness of Ulysses lies in the minutiae, and the greater the lengths you go to get a handle on that, the more well fed you'll feel by the end.
The story - loosely based, as the title suggests, on Homer's Odyssey - concerns a day in the life of, principally, Stephan Dedalus (central protagonist of Joyce's earlier, and much much MUCH more accessible Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, both of whom wander about Dublin both as it is physically lain out before them and as it is scrawled about the alleys of their...

Irish Eyes Aren't Smiling
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, all of which are set in, you've guessed it, Dublin. The book was published in 1914 and is available in the Penguin Popular Classics range - you should be able to pick it up for £1.
My previous forays into Penguin Popular Classics have had mixed results - Treasure Island was very good, Robinson Crusoe was dire. Happily, Dubliners joins the very good category.
Joyce was only 25 when he completed Dubliners, which if I think about it too much makes me feel very inadequate. When reading the book you can certainly detect the genius present in such a young man.
It is difficult to generalise about the 15 stories - as I said before, they are all set in Dublin, and most have some sort of undercurrent of sadness that becomes evident by the end of the tale. Most of the early...

Not revolutionary but a beautiful book
Advantages: How can I justify Joyce in an advantages and disadvantages section?
Disadvantages: Don't be silly - its James Joyce
...I may be a bit biased because I am a Joyce fanatic. However, this collection of short stories is definitely worth a look. At the time Joyce wrote Dubliners, the short story was the fictional medium to use. Strangely though, although the stories can be read in isolation, some of the richest meanings are gained when the stories are seen as a collection that is both unified and divided.
Joyce's early work is seemingly more 'accessible' to the casual reader. Its style, which Joyce described as one of 'scrupulous meaness' is seemingly not one of literary 'richness'. However, in reality the richness is all there to be had; its just that the reader needs to extract it. If the stories are read in conjunction then more parallels, 'themes' (although I hate that idea), symbols and ideas become progressively more apparent. However, this is not...

Very
Advantages: cleverly written, excellent portrayal of Dublin,
Disadvantages: a little bleak
...An update!! Apologies to everyone who actually read the previous review, I hope you will find this one a little more informative!
James Joyce is a word genius, writing works which usually involve serious code-breaking and banging heads on walls, but Dubliners is quite accessible, even if, at points, quite difficult. Funnily enough, the first story is the hardest to understand, which maybe Joyce does purposely? I think so, the more you read of his, the more it dawns on you that Joyce doesn't like rules. Any rules at all. And that includes with writing... expect to find sentences beginning with subjects, nouns, adjectives, compounds, or in fact anything he wants. Some call it clever, some idiotic, who am I to judge?
Dubliners is a book containg fifteen short (but bleak!) stories about life in, and experiences of, Dublin, and are all...

A Paralysed City
Advantages: Being Irish, I can assure you that this is an accurate and well written depiction of Dublin at the time.
Disadvantages: The Short story form prevents a great build of characters, but instead gives short extracts of their lives
...I am studying 'Dubliners' for A-level and have found it one of the most insightful and poignant books I have ever read. So to give you a more intricate view into what the stories are about and the way in which Joyce uses language to portray the feeling of the city at the time, I thought I would give you an extract from one of my essays. Enjoy!
Examine Joyce’s treatment of Social ambition and disappointment in ‘After the Race’.
This is one of a few stories in the Dubliners in which Joyce puts the newly developed middle class under his ‘looking glass’, and shows up their many flaws with the ‘scrupulous meanness’ he shows his other characters. Through Jimmy Doyle, the young adventurous protagonist, who lives ‘in excess’ but kindles little ambition or talent, we are reminded...

Heart of Dublin
Advantages: welcoming, clean, central
Disadvantages: restaurant price
...As mentioned in my last review, I was recently on a trip to Dublin. The main part of my holiday apart from experiencing the city is to me the accommodation. I have been to many hotels but not all I would return to although I have to say I cannot fault the Jury's Inn Parnell Street. A hotel is of course where I stay and want to be in a good location. I have heard of Jury's Inn's because I know where I live in Edinburgh they have them and I have heard positive things about them.
Only going away for a short break I was looking for something quite cheap but not to the extent of hostel cheap. The rating for this hotel was 3 stars which is what I will always start at and no lower. The website was where I booked it and everything was easy to navigate. Going with friends I wanted a triple and it asks if you want three single beds or a double...

INDULGENCE IN DUBLIN...........
Advantages: Luxurious surroundings.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive.
...It would appear that the information Ciao has on the header for this hotel is a few years out of date.......
The Westbury is a five star hotel and is part of the Jurys Doyle group of hotels.
It's also one of a select number of hotels within the collection of Leading Hotels of the World.
Jurys Doyle state that they are dedicated to providing prime city centre locations and this hotel is most certainly in a prime central Dublin location - it's yards from the shopping heaven of Grafton Street.
