Is this" the best cathedral on planet earth" ? Durham Cathedral

...INTRODUCTION: The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, otherwise known simply as Durham Cathedral is in the city of Durham, in North east England. The cathedral is thought to be one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and because of this has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Castle which is opposite the Cathedral just cross Palace Green. The Cathedral was built on a peninsula of land created by a loop in the meandering River Wear and the west end towers over the gorge. The northern front of the Cathedral faces onto Palace green and from here you can get a view of the entire 143 metres of this building which is an imposing sight. Royal connections but not that luxurious -Durham Marriott hotel

Advantages: Comfortable, convenient for city sight seeing
Disadvantages: luke warm bath water and average food in restaurant

...Durham Marriot Hotel Royal County Old Elvert, Durham DH1 3JN A BIT OF SCENE SETTING: This hotel is part of the Marriott chain but is an old hotel which was once the home of Elizabeth Bowes an ancestor of the Queen Mother. Apparently it was often visited when it was privately owned by Edward VII when he was up in Durham. It has had quite a large series of extensions and now boasts 150 bedrooms, some of which are suites and family rooms all and have en suite bathrooms ( As you might expect in a hotel I would have thought). This is a four star hotel right in the centre of Durham so perfect for a city break as you can park your car in the hotel (complimentary) car park and walk round the city which is very compact and just a hop over the road from the hotel. Durham Cathedral - Britain's Best-Loved Building!

...I do like cathedrals and churches, and have visited quite a few, but I do consider myself lucky enough to live here in the north-east and not far from what I consider to be the best cathedral I have ever seen! The cathedral I am talking about is Durham Cathedral, built high on a peninsula of land, created by a loop in the River Wear, it can be seen from miles around. I remember from childhood, when being away from the north-east on holiday or a day trip, returning home up the A1 I would look for Durham Cathedral, and when spotting it in the distance, know I would soon be 'home'. I still think that way to this day! ...The premier event in rowing in the North of England, Durham Regatta has often been described as the Henley of the North. Held annually in early-mid June, the regatta is now in its 172nd year with the first regatta having been held in 1834. This makes it the second oldest regatta in the country and is older than even Henley Royal Regatta. ...I've jsut entered my final year at Durham, and it's fair to say I've kept myself very busy. While Durham may not be famed for it's rocking nightlife (though I promise you, it does have one), I'm yet to meet a student here who's bored or regretting their choice of university. Wandering round Freshers's Fair a few weeks ago,I found hundreds of activities and societies I hadn't even heard of, and there's plenty to keep me interested. Durham doesn't offer a course in theatre, and yet we have arguably the most active theatre scene of any university in the country, with many students going into theatre after they graduate (check out www.dur.ac.uk/DST for more info). COME TO DURHAM

...Why don't I start with the classic Durham quote: "Go to Durham, take my car, it's wonderful" Thanks to good ol' Bill Bryson for that one. I would back up that quote but you certainly can't borrow my car to go! I'm studying at Durham (Engineering if you really want to know) and absolutely love it. The "city" has all the necessary features proving that size really doesn't matter (keep telling yourself that!) as long as everything's in the right place. The city has 2 cinemas, many pubs, a cathedral, 2 castles (one more famous than the other), a top-quality university (or at least I'd like to think so!), a botannical garden. DURHAM CITY....and no bull

Advantages: Interesting historic city
Disadvantages: I didn't really find any

...I spent a couple of days in Yorkshire last week and....yes, yes, I know DURHAM isn't in Yorkshire but if you'd just curb that rascally impatience for a moment or two, I'll explain. We left our hotel (in Yorkshire) just before 9am to return home - and as home was only a 2-3 hour drive, we decided to stop off somewhere for an hour or two and, although I'd only ever passed through, I'd heard good things about Durham so decided to visit. Durham - the best university?

Advantages: excellent academic support, beautiful city, everywhere is within walking distance
Disadvantages: can't think of any

...I'm a student at Durham university and I'd just like to say what a good time I am having there! It's not just that you get excellent teaching. You also get a lot of academic support from teaching staff and on top of that you also have a college tutor. At my college - Van Mildert - you also have a "college mum" who is a second/third/fourth year who does your subject and they are able to answer questions about the subject and sometimes sell you their old books at cheaper prices. As well as the support you get, Durham is great because it is a small city and all the colleges and places you need to be are withing walking distance of each other. Also Durham is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. There is the river which is only at most a ten minute walk from any of the colleges and there are lots of woodland paths which you...

Durham - great if you can endure the cold

...Durham University is a fantastic institution, for which i only have praise. The University is set in and around the idyllic city of Durham, unlike other Uni's that use the name of a place though not really anywhere near it - Warwick University, is in fact, closer to coventry and is actually in the middle of nowhere. Durham is one of the top academic universities in the country and has been rated in the top five for the last few years. The university, although striving for excellence, is by no means elitist or arrogant. The students are unassuming and add to the colour of the city. Durham consists of 12 colleges, some being closer to the academic departments than others and students have a choice of single or mixed colleges - i would recommend the latter.
