A Golden DVD!

Disadvantages: sorry, if you're under 12, its a no-go!

The Notebook DVD

Advantages: Moving, beautiful love story

...Having watched this film on Channel 4 at the weekend (I have the DVD also but just had to watch it) I've decided to review it for anyone who hasn't seen it. Although, I see that a lot of people have already seen it as the UK premier on Channel 4 attracted 1 million viewers!! The Notebook is a beautiful romance that still makes me cry after numerous viewings. It is poignant, romantic, sad, hopeful and uplifting all rolled into one. The Notebook was actually developed from a book written by the American author Nicholas Sparks in 1996. It spent over a year as a hardcover best seller. The film version was released in 2004. It follows the story of Noah and Allie, childhood sweethearts who eventually find each other again after years apart. The story is very cleverly told as a flashback. It begins in a modern day nursing home...

Thirteen DVD

Advantages: Realistic, Honest, Great Acting
Disadvantages: Explicit/Emotional

...for anyone who is looking for easy viewing. It includes scenes of self-harm, drug use and violence. It is a very well-made film, though. The acting is fantastic and realistic, portraying teenage life in a totally different way from general American films set in high schools. It is particularly impressive due to the low budget available for filming - the end result seems more authentic, with no need for fancy special effects. The cameras used are mainly hand-held though, so it's probably not a good idea to watch this film if you easily get a headache. The DVD features are great - there is an insight to the soundtrack, as well as deleted scenes, the "making of" and commentary. To sum up , I think this is definitely a film to watch at least once. It may not be to everyone's tastes due to the nature and tone of the film (which is quite depressing to...

Leatherheads DVD

Advantages: Funny, George Clooney
Disadvantages: None

...almost filmed like that too, quite fast paced and uses a lot of old time props such as steam trains and really adds a good element to the film. The costumes are great as well and it really makes you lust after the wardrobe of Renee Zellweger. George Clooney plays his part extremely well too and although he is looking a bit older he still pulls off the rugged, football player look. John Kraskinsi is not as an established actor as the other too but does not seem out of his depth at all and really holds his own against the other two stars. There are not too many bonus features in this DVD, just some deleted scenes which are quite funny in places. The film lasts for approximately 1 hour and 49 minutes and it is a PG, containing mild language and comic violence. I would not rush to see this film again but it is funny enough, different...

It is usually me that buys these sorts of things and then I have to get my boyfriend to give me half the money. A stinker of a DVD.

Advantages: Keeps the children amused, helps teach morals. Educational.

...Pingu is a small penguin that lives on the Icecap. He lives in an igloo with his mum, his postman dad and baby sister Pinga. His grandpa lives in an igloo nearby. Pingu loves to play; he loves to ski, sledge, play fish tennis and most of all play in the snow. He loves to learn about the world around him both alone and with his friends Seal, Pongi, Pingo and Pingg. Pingu has been around for some time but I think the more recent episodes are much better. The story appeal highly to children due to the scrapes that Pingu and his friends get into but also for the added addition of the occasional burp and other bodily noises either in the bath or whilst on the toilet. However what children probably don't realise is that most of the stories have a hidden moral in them, and this DVD is no exception. Pingu does not speak English, however...

A Classic DVD

Advantages: It has two great movies
Disadvantages: not much known about Dayar e madina..

...This 3 pack DVD has two great blockbusters from the Golden era namely Chhalia (1960)and China Town(1962), although the other film Dayar-E-Madina , a muslim social relatively little known.. Chhalia has an impressive star cast of Raj Kapoor, Nutan, Rehman and Pran ,and an equally impressive music score by composers Kalyanji Anandji. Chhalia is by no means one of Nutan's best films, in fact it compares poorly with the Raj kapoor-Nutan starrer 'Anadi' ...the story line is a bit complicated at times, with too many twists and turns...but the music is pleasing especially Mukesh songs'Dum dum diga diga ' 'Chalia mera naam and 'Mere toote hue dil mein.. and Lata's 'Tere rahon mein khade hai ' and 'Baje paayal cham cham'....worth watching a great actress like Nutan in any film, and picturisation of the melodious songs... Coming to China Town...
