Trail of the Screaming Forehead (Director's Cut) [DVD]
United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene...... more
United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Aesthetically and thematically, director Larry Blamire's outrageous camp-fest Trail of the Screaming Forehead resuscitates and satirizes bottom-of-the-barrel 1950s sci-fi movies such as X the Unknown and The Creeping Terror. Blamire's tale revolves around the scientific discovery that foreheads (and not brains) house human intelligence. In a misguided attempt to prove this axiom, scientist Dr. Sheila Bexter (Fay Masterson) injects a serum called "Foreheadazine" into the cranium of her colleague, Dr. Phillip Latham (Andrew Parks) - whose head rapidly balloons to the size of a watermelon. Meanwhile, a spaceship packed with "furrowed brows" crash-lands on Earth, and the brows promptly attach themselves to every human in sight. To complicate matters, dozens of locals also get wind of the scientists' project and decide to investigate; before long, the entire seaside community is swarming with addicts of the Foreheadazine drug, a problem that doubles in size when two liquor-happy sailors arrive in town with a boatload of frozen human bodies. Blamire re-creates the visual look of '50s sci-fi films such as The Blob by shooting in shockingly bright rotogravure colors - a photographic process he dubbed "Crainioscope." Stop-motion demigod Ray Harryhausen -- who reportedly inspired this work thanks to such classics as Jason and the Argonauts and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad -- is listed as "presenter," and his influence can be seen via the special effects of the ballooning heads. ...Trail of the Screaming Forehead ( Trail Of The Screaming Forehead: Director's Cut ) ... less

Maisy: Colours and Counting [DVD]

Maisy, the epony-mouse from Lucy Cousins' hugely popular books, has been brought to the small screen in a series of beautifully produced animated tales now collected together on video. Each episode focuses on a central theme such as "Bedtime" or "Birthday", and features Maisy's band of friends: Tallulah the effervescent chick, Eddie the elephant, Cyril the Squirrel, and the stomach-obsessed crocodile Charley. The animation reproduces the bright, block colours of the books, but adds a new dimension of playful characterisation and sound effects. The characters' voices are very much in the Teletubbies and Pingu mode, offering few discernible words but perfectly evoking the individual characters and appealing to very young children. Neil Morrissey's voice-over offers a gentle, questioning cue for Maisy and her friends' activities, and further brings out the stories' educational emphasis. The Maisy videos combine simple presentation with charming characterisation to great effect and each tale is constructed with an underlying intelligence and humour that repays repeat viewings. For those in occasional need of a Teletubby-free zone, these are the perfect videos for pre-school children. In Colours & Counting Maisy picks up all her friends in her bus (although Eddie is a tight squeeze!), plays hide and seek with Charly, and organizes an egg hunt for everyone. In "Clouds" she goes ballooning, while at the circus Cyril spin plates, Tallulah walks the tightrope, Eddie trampolines and Maisy does a turn on the trapeze. The emphasis on numbers and colours is imaginatively applied throughout, particularly when Eddie helps Maisy paint her shed in technicolour! --Steve Napleton ... less

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta [DVD]
This presentation beautifully illustrates the full glory of Europe`s largest annual balloon fiesta, an attraction that has become one of the most popular...... more
This presentation beautifully illustrates the full glory of Europe`s largest annual balloon fiesta, an attraction that has become one of the most popular outdoor events in the UK, with half a million visitors each year. You will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes insight into what makes the fiesta such a success. Set in the rolling parkland of Bristol`s Ashton Court Estate, the fiesta includes mass balloon launches, providing a spectacular show for those at the event and also for spectators throughout the area. There is also a wide range of other activities, including daredevil stunts, and fun for all the family in a carnival atmosphere. The history of ballooning in Bristol, which goes as far back as the pioneering days of the late 18th century, is also explored, revealing another dimension to what may appear to be a very modern story. There is also a special report on Cameron Balloons, the world`s largest manufacturer of hot-air balloons, who produced the balloon that completed the first solo round-the-world flight in 2001. The company`s founder and Managing Director, Don Cameron, adds insightful comment to the story, and so it is fitting that the presentation should end with a balloon flight piloted by Don himself! ... less

My friend the balloon
Advantages: Beautiful, just beautiful
Disadvantages: Nothing, although short films aren't really my thing
...The Red Balloon is a curious film. It is a short, coming in at just over 30 mins long and focusing mainly on a boy and his balloon. Lauded for its cinematography and apparent symbolism, it sees a young boy going about his day, to school and then back again, through some banlieu back streets. He comes across this red balloon which he shows an interest in and which subsequently follows him...

Balloon whisk
Advantages: Handy, easy to use
Disadvantages: None
...a mixture, in a process known as whisking or whipping. Most whisks consist of a long, narrow handle with a series of wire loops joined at the end. The wires are usually metal."
There are quite a few types of whisk and this balloon whisk is so called because in my opinion it looks like a balloon. It is larger and more bulbous at the top and then comes to a point at the end where it attaches to the handle...
