The Simpsons: Film Festival review

...The Simpsons: Film Festival is a 'best of' collection of four episodes. One of my favourite things about The Simpsons is their memorable movie references, and these four episodes are four of the greatest examples of this. The episodes are "Beyond Blunderdome", "A Star is Burns", "22 Short Films About Springfield" and "The Itchy and Scratchy Movie". In "Beyond Blunderdome" Homer wins tickets to see Mel Gibson's new movie, a remake of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", and asked to review it, which he promptly berates for being boring. This bothers Mel so much he flies back to Springfield and asks for Homers help in order to re-edit the film. What results is a bloody tour de force that has Mel decapitating the President of the United States. Review of The Simpsons - The Simpsons' Film Festival (DVD)

an opinion on the film and dvd

Advantages: some good action, nice sound mix
Disadvantages: very underwhelming considering talent involved

.... The sports coach has gone from an angry driven individual to a very relaxed guy while the jaded history teacher suddenly has a new lease of life. Yep they've all been taken over by aliens and soon the whole school is taken over and it's up to one gang of kids to save the day. The film has some good action and a few nice ideas. Certainly some parts are not exploited to the full. Robert Patrick as the coach is good but is never given a great deal to do, they could have really made a great joke out of his famous T-1000 role. Also this is the film where writer Kevin Williamson's "cool" dialougue started to get annoying as some of the characters aren't anything new. The ending is the big letdown, after a great reveal the climax is over in a few minutes and is quite under-whelming. Dvd wise for once the Region 2 actually has something over it...

A GREAT FILM AND DVD

Advantages: Brilliant drama
Disadvantages: Nothing

...I got recommended this film a while back and got lent the DVD version so I thought I'd watch it one night when I had nothing else to do. I got told not to expect that much, but a pretty good film. I personally thought that was pretty naff advice, I really liked this action packed flik and would recommend this film to anyone thats heard of it. The film stars Dennis Quiad and Jim Caveizel as father and son in a predictable tale of action and wills or won't they? A daft easy to watch superhero film (Hancock (DVD))

Advantages: Has some funny scenes, very easy film to watch
Disadvantages: Some very poor computer generated scenes

...I originally saw this film in the cinema and loved it so when I saw that it was being showed on Sky movies I just had to watch it again. Whats is about? Hancock (played by the lovely Will Smith) starts of as a down and out drunk with superhuman powers such as: flight, super-strength, immortality and invulnerability, whilst trying to catch criminals and help people in need he causes so much damage that the people of Los Angeles hate him. One day he saves the life of Ray Embrey (who works in public relations) and Ray (played by Jason Bateman) feels he has to repay Hancoock so he decides to try and change Hancocks image. Ray decided the best way to get people to love Hancock is to put him in prison, he feels that if Hancock is not around crime in the city will start to rise and people will demand Hancocks release so he can come and save...

15 MINUTES THE DVD AND FILM REVIEWED

Advantages: Good acting, good effects, interesting storyline
Disadvantages: Slow storyline, a little lacking in the storyline in places

Grammer’s character in 15 Minutes is not so nice though – he stars as Robert Hawkins, he’s the man at the big American TV channel that would pay big bucks for a videotape of murders. Karel Roden and Oleg Razkul – are the bad guys, they give pretty bland performances but are well suited to the bad guy Eastern European role in 15 Minutes. In the film Karel Roden is a Czech and Oleg Razkul is a Russian in the film, though as far as most viewers are concerned they’re Russian. The DVD ~~ I wouldn’t say its worth buying this on DVD or buying it on video in fact, I’d only say its worth renting but if you’re a real fan of the film there are some nice little goodies on the DVD version of this. Firstly you have commentary of the film by John Hertzfield, which is very informative...

Review of Fifteen Minutes (DVD)

The Film of the DVD Player

Advantages: Emphasises advanced picture quality from DVD Player
Disadvantages: After repeated watching some areas become tedious to watch

...This film is the reason the DVD player was made, it shows off the excellent sound and picture qualities! The last fight scene in the top of the building is a good enough reason for buying this film on its own - a special effects master piece. The actors give fairly good performances and with a fairly well-known cast don't overdo their fame levels - Keanu Reeves adds many an exciting action scene and many there are in this film. A special effects, action film that will be remembered for the enjoyment it gave people when watching and contemplation it created afterwards! IF YOU OWN A DVD PLAYER YOU MUST BUY 'THE MATRIX' ON DVD!!!...

Great Film, Great DVD

Advantages: Amazing Special FX
Disadvantages: Far-fetched storyline

...You've probably heard a lot about the Matrix and how good a film it is or at least how good the effects are. If you thought the video was great then wait until you watch the DVD. I've had the DVD version of The Matrix a couple of days and have been extremely impressed with the quality of picture and the sound. The special effects are amazing and by themselves warrant buying the DVD. On the negative side, the storyline itself is perhaps a little bit far-fetched but will appeal to sci-fi buffs like myself. The DVD includes several "Documentary" extras and several additional features that can be accessed with a PC and DVD-ROM drive....

Advantages: Behind the scenes with one of the most influential bands in rock
Disadvantages: Unless you're Spinal Tap, tours aren't a natural for a linear documentary

...the tour without imploding again? Would they record anything? And a little film production company dared ask the question, "can we make a documentary about it?" Stick Figure Productions try and fail to unwrap the enigma; how did such apparently ordinary people make such a fabulous racket? One can only sympathise; you score the coup of your filmmaking career, then discover how tricky it will be to realise. There is a rather daunting obligation not to screw it up, and it's debatable as to whether they succeed. The film opens with a quote. As far as Pixies fans are concerned, it's the one that annoys us the most, as if all the band were good for was to inspire one man to write one song. Untouchable as a film, not as a DVD.

Advantages: Great script, acting and plot. Super music.
Disadvantages: No extra features

..., Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Turkish Dolby Digital Surround Sound and 5.1 Overall: The lack of extras in a film so good is almost a crime in itself. At the very least, a Director's Commentary would have added significantly to the DVD, and with the set and costumes being faithfully recreated for the prohibition era, I'm surprised there aren't some behind the scenes documentaries on offer. Review of The Untouchables (DVD)

sams the man- a film and dvd opinion

Advantages: great action scenes, fun, good sound
Disadvantages: a bit silly for some tastes

...are all mainly cardboard cut-outs but these are the kind of movie that we give the term 'popcorn' to. They shouldn't be taken seriously and they do entertain. It didn't do that well in the states but fared better in european countries and is worth a look. As for the dvd well you have two options as far as I'm concerned. The UK Region 2 is released by those fine dvd producers EIV and they've given the consumer a non-anamorphic widescreen transfer, a pointless featurette and worst of all Dolby Pro Logic sound. If you can go for the Region 1 which is produced by those great dvd people at New Line. The dvd isn't part of their Platinum Series but you still have great presentation. The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and it's a very sharp transfer with hardly any problems at all. I can't really fault it. There's also...
