...Wharfedale DVDR24HD250 These machines are currently on sale at Argos for a bargain price of £79.99. For this you get an analogue tuner and a DVD recorder with a 240 GB hard drive. There is HDMI output, but I have not been able to test this yet as I have not bought an HDMI TV. Looking at the list of what it has and what it can do runs to a list of 40 items. I have tried to mention the most useful ones. At home, I have it fixed up to my VHS, my Sony Beta (yes - I still have a working one after 25 years!), a Virgin cable box, and a free Sky satellite box. I can record from all of these, plus the analogue terrestrial TV signal. Advantages: Hard Disk recording, time shifting, 8hr recording on dvdr, firewire input
Disadvantages: can't record directly to dvdr, 5min chapters, can't adjust timeshift buffer

I paid £299 for this recorder but it is now available for half that price :( OK, to start off with, it's pricey but in your livingroom it looks expensive anyway. Well presented with a nice mirrored look, a blue lit circle indicates timeshift recording and a red lit circle indicates hdd/dvdr recording. The first thing you will notice is the automatic setup when you first switch on the unit. Make sure you have your aerial/Sky, cable or freeview box plugged in before you switch on. You might have to re-organise the order of channels when it is finished, in my case this was not necessary. If all goes well with the setup the next thing you see will be the blue circle lighting up, this indicates the timeshift buffer is in operation. When you start the installation process you have all the connections you need at the rear of the unit including scart, HDMI, S-Video and digital audio connections. Connecting your sky and any other units you have should not prove difficult. The unit will go through the digital TV channels no problem and locate them in the order you will be used to. Moving onto the media that it accepts. You will be able to use DVDR +/- RW+/-, MP3 CD, Picture CD and Audio CD. Video CD is also one that runs on it. So that covers most if not all. stable DVD-/+R!!!

...This DVD-/+R is absolutely amazing, it has never let me down! First, the This type of DVD is said to be Data/Video and it does what the description say. When i first burnt my home video on to this DVD-/+R and played it on my DVD player, i thought it wasn't going to recognize it, however it played it correctly without jumping tracks or anything!. I tried burning with my other DVD-/+R but all of them didn't recognized my home video, sadly! Personally, i would go for DVD+R for burning home videos. Burning it using data as a storage also delivers a high quality. There were no errors and each time, it recognized the disc because some 'crappy' DVD-/+R doesn't even load it on the computer, HOwever, TDK is top-notch. The burning speed for DVD is 1-4x so it's not that slow. To burn the whole Data of 4.7gb would take about 30 minutes...

The DVDR5570H is flakier than a double 99

...This isn't a detailed review, I may edit this up into a full review later, if I have the time. The Philips DVDR5570H is a combined DVD recorder and hard disk recorder. It has an impressive spec for the price and the box looks very smart. It won't record TV directly to DVD, TV recordings have to be copied from the hard disk to the DVD. Nice features include the 6 hour live buffer, allowing you to rewind the alst 6 hours of TV and the IR controller which can be used to change channels on a connected cable or satellite box. We loved it initially, but were soon annoyed by a tendency to crash and to muddle up the names of programs stored on the disk. A firmware upgrade to the latest version was supposed to solve these problems, but the upgrade added new problems without solving old ones. After a little over a year, we've lost...
