Sony DVP-NS38B - good cheap multiregion DVD player
Advantages: Cheap, Multiregion, Works well
Disadvantages: A bit complicated!
...When my trusty old DVD player finally died, I bought the Sony DVP-NS38 B as its replacement for approximately £60.
My requirements for a DVD player were extremely basic: I wanted an entry level multi-region DVD player. So I headed off to my local Richer Sounds and had a look at the two or three that satisfied my requirements and didn't look too flimsy and picked the one that they happened to have in stock.
According to the manual, as well as commercial DVDs, this model supports a variety of different formats: DVD-RW/-R, DVD+RW/+R/+R DL, Video CD, Music CD and CD-RW/-R.
The DVD player is very thin, meaning that not many buttons or controls fit on it, and the LED display is very small and does not contain a lot of information. In terms of outputs - it has a digital audio coax and a SCART socket.
On the front of the case there are...

Philips DVP 3120 - nice little DVD player
Advantages: Fair price
Disadvantages: Sound is ok - but not brilliant
...I bought the DVP 3120 because I needed a new DVD player and this one was recommended by a friend. Obviously I wanted a good quality one (who doesn?t?) and did not want to pay too much for it. After six month usage I can honestly say I am very satisfied. This was a good buy.
I do have a lot of space at home. But I like things being tucked away, looking not too bulky and this one seemed a very good fit. At the moment it sits on top of my television.
Sound: Quite nice but does not work to well with a surround system. The quality just gets lost a little bit.
Getting started:
The manual is great and good to understand. It?s very easy to set it up. Just plug it into the power socket and attach the scart cable. Voila, that?s it.
Nice little details:
This DVD player seems to play all DVD?s you can think of. I played self...

Sony have done it again - DVP S735D DVD Player
Advantages: Picture quality, Sound quality, looks
Disadvantages: None
...Sony DVP S735D DVD Player
This has got to be the best DVD Player in the market today.
It has a full aluminium casing and very pleasing to the eye and as my friends say “sexy”
I used to have an old Panasonic Compact model and just purchased this one last week at PDS440.00.
I thought I’d wait about a week before I gave my opinion on it.
I know the price might be a bit steep but this is the best DVD Player around and if you’re a movie freak like me you will appreciate the full benefits of this player.
The picture quality is crystal clear and this is enhanced with what Sony call “Smooth Scan”
The sound is out of this world especially if you’ve got a got a television with good sound capabilities, otherwise link it up through your Hi-Fi system to really enjoy the full benefits...

Philips DVP 5100/05 DivX DVD Player
Advantages: Plays multiple DVD formats and Video File Formats, Not Too Expensive
Disadvantages: The slot loading draw takes a while to eject.
...This unit has many positive attributes, but also a few negative.
-Positives-
I was searching the net for a decent DivX standalone player. I was looking for one which plays multiple file formats and multiple DVD types. This unit seemed to play the widest variety whilst still being in my price range.
The Philips DVP5100 will play DivX, Xvid, MPEG1 /2 /4, SVCD, JPEG Disc, MP3 Disc and a few other types listed on the manufacturer's website.
It has played every kind of DVD I have thrown at it also, including DVD+R's, which not all machines play. I was very happy about this as I'd just bought 100 of the things.
I haven't had any problems playing discs up to now, this machine has easily handled a disc with 17 separate DivX files and they all played fine.
The picture and sound quality is great. The unit has a Progressive Scan...

Sony DVP NS76H Upscaling DVD player
Advantages: Upscales exisiting movies, Much cheaper than a BluRay player
Disadvantages: Doesn't come with HDMI cable
...As some of you may know HD TV is here, along with HD DVD and BluRay formats. Due to both these DVD formats still being very new, the equipment is very expensive. So if you want to experience a better picture quality using just your old normal DVDs then this is what you need.
The Sony DVPNS76HS, looks very much like just another DVD player. However it is capable of upscaling your existing DVDS to a level thats close to High Definition. Connecting this DVD through an HDMI connection will give you a much sharper image, remember however these are not true HD so dont try and compare the two.
It is a region 2 DVD player which means you can only play discs that are from UK and Europe. It comes as standard with a remote control, 1 HDMI socket and 1 scart socket. It is also capable of playing back almost all DVD formats, as well as DIVX...

Philips DVP 520 DVD Player
Advantages: Plays DVD, VCD, SVCD, MPEG, MP3 and JPEG
Disadvantages: None so far
...I recently purchased this DVD player (about 6 weeks ago) and I have to say that I have been exceedingly impressed. At the price I paid (£59.99) I would have expected nothing more than an average player which had little or no supplementary features.
Boy, was I wrong! After setting it up, which consisted of plugging in the scart cable and switching on, I discovered to my delight that this was slightly more than an 'average' player. It will play DVD (obviously!), VCD, SVCD, MPEG, MP3 and even JPEG picture files, at last I could bore family and friends alike by showing all my exceptionally interesting holiday snaps on the big screen.
Operating the player is simple, the on screen display and menu features are easily understandable and there are enough options for setup to satisfy even the most discerning techno-freak. The stylish...

A Great DVD Player - SONY DVP-NS330
Advantages: Excellent quality, looks good/ modern, can play most formats
Disadvantages: Cannot play PAL in colour eg some extreme sports DVD's or old movies
...I bought this DVD Player about 2 years ago now for £99 from a high street shop which I thought was a total bargain seeing as it is a Sony. I have never had any problems with it at all and find it plays most formats of DVD. It also plays mp3s, DVD - RW / -R/ +RW and + R discs.
QUALITY - Visual quality is fantastic, playing all DVDs in really sharp colour, it doesn't seem to stop halfway through a disc for a second like other DVD players do. The sound quality is pretty good with the capability of Dolby Surround which is a bonus for most people as a lot of people now have surround sound systems.
You can also connect it to a Sony stack which would be like your hi-fi or something if you don't have a Sony hi-fi.
It is a scart unit also which is good because you do not have to tune it in or anything. (Make sure your TV or other...

Sony DVD player with HDMI output 1080i, DVP5960
Advantages: VERY good upscaling, good price
Disadvantages: No clock, remote slow sometimes
...I had bought a bush DVD player for HDMI upscaling and it didn't really do anyhting.
I exchanged it for the Sony. The upscaling is fantastic, really gives you the HD experience withouth actually having proper HD (althought its not the same as the real stuff).
For the price, it is fantastic. All modes of upscaling, progressive scan if you need it, zoom function, 3D virtual sound etc etc, with various modes. I cant fault it. The remote is not exactly responsive but I can overlook that.
Has USB socket for sticking a memory stick in and plays DIVX movies
plugged in, connected HDMI cable and away I went (took a few moments for TV to recognise it).
Doesnt have clock etc, but do you really need that these days.
Likes: Looks OK (quite wide, but same width as my current DVD recorder),
Easy to use
Lots of options...

Philips DVP3020 - Stylish and cheap!
Advantages: Stylish, good picture and audio quality, pretty good range of supported formats
Disadvantages: Had problem with a previous unit not working properly, Only region 2 compatible
...This DVD player might not have all the features and playback compatibility of some units but it certainly has a good look and feel to it. You can pick it up very cheaply too. It might not support DivX or Xvid playback but for me thats not a problem, however if you like to download movies and play them back using this kind of technology then this won't fit the bill for you (although I believe that there is a model Philips do which does include DivX playback, with the same sleek design just a slightly larger spec at maybe £30 or so more than this model, so that would probably be worth looking into).
This DVD player offers progressive scan, which gives it better picture quality compared to the old bog standard DVD players, it however does not upscale to HDMI (near HD picture quality). Having said that, I use my DVD player with my Philips...

Upscaling DVD recorder for the price of a player
Advantages: Features, Connectivity, Media and Video formats the envy of other DVD recorders.
Disadvantages: No more live TV for me! I'm re-watching my recordings upscaled
...After years of sterling service I retired my Philips DVDR70 DVD recorder for a newer model. As I had recently updated my TV to a HD-Ready 1080i LCD panel I thought I would opt for one that offered both video-upscaling to 1080i and HDMI connectivity. I chose to look among those models of DVD recorder manufactured by Philips, after all they did invent the CD/DVD technology upon which all players and recorders are based together with my great experience living with my first Philips DVDR70 DVD recorder.
The DVDR 5500 not only offered a built-in Freeview tuner but also one for analogue TV reception, until the analogue "switch-off" looming in the upcoming years, making recording both analogue and digital TV so simple. The Freeview has a full 5-day EPG for you to review the upcoming digital schedule as well as program the recorder direct...
