For Dylan Lovers

Advantages: Silvio is good, some of the Tex-Mex influences interesting, solid album coherence

...Is it me, or is it becoming more and more difficult to tell apart Bob Dylan's latter material? Since his wonderful Time Out Of Mind, I can't help thinking everything is beginning to sound the same? Together Through Life was supposed to be Dylan's return to his blues roots but to me it sounds incredibly similar to Modern Times and in some respects Love and Theft too. The overall feel is rootsy, bluesy, folksy rock. The album is spontaneous (recorded with his touring band) and at the same time messy and loose in places. It's light in subject matter focusing on romance and love rather than weightier subject matter that may have existed in previous albums. This shouldn't let the material down, but it does. You just feel that this isn't Dylan really trying... and you could be forgiven for thinking that given the speed at which it was...

Delightful stay at Dylan's

Advantages: Lovely room, lovely breakfast, lovely owners

...For his birthday I got Mr Tart a trip to Cornwall so that we could go surfing. I?d never been to Cornwall before so I did a fair bit of research about the best places to surf (I?d never done it before and he?s a beginner) and came up with Bude, especially as it was one of the closer places in Cornwall for us to get to. I was looking for a reasonably priced guesthouse for us to stay in and came across Dylan's. LOCATION: Dylan's is located on Down?s View Road in Bude. It is about 5 minutes away from the town centre and the beach. Bude itself is in North Cornwall. It took us about 3 hours to get there from Bristol. There is no parking for the guesthouse itself but there is plenty of parking on the road. PRICES: Prices for Dylan's vary according to season and which room you have. I think that there are six rooms altogether...

Dylan's Return To Form

Advantages: Some of Dylan's best songwriting, interesting production
Disadvantages: A little dark perhaps for some

...Time Out Of Mind sees an emphatic return to form from Dylan after years spent in the wilderness and many mediocre albums behind him throughout the 80's. Released in 1997 this is a true testimonial of a grumpy old man who has reached the twighlight of his years and is confused about where he is and what he has become. Lyrically, I think this is one of Dylan's strongest albums, not just of his latter day career, but of all time. He has become much more focused in his writing and has lost some of the more cryptic writing of his earlier material. I know some regard it as a sin to ay, but I quite like understanding what he's writing about. Don't get me wrong, the Dylanisms and the poetic vision is still here but has been channelled. Dylan, Unplugged. Great musical journey.

Advantages: Dylan fans will love this.
Disadvantages: None-Dylan fanes my not.

...Excellent sound quality thought-out. I think this is one of the best Live Dylan I have heard. Starts with the wonderful Tombstone blues-Clear messages great vocals. Then, settling goes into the romantic Shooting stars. Bursting into All along the watchtower followed by the times they are a changing? makes you want to stand up and sway from side to side and join in with the singing. John Brown is harrowing; you can do nothing else but listen to this- loudly. The mod slows down for Desolation row, and then gets faster for Rainy day woman-this change in tempo is a real pleasure. A beautiful love song follows, this is really nice live and clear. Dignity is interesting-you have to just listen to it and enjoy. Knockin? on heavens door is nothing unusual or exiting, just good music, and lyrics. Dylan finishes with God on our side...

...I bought this album, Time Out Of Mind, not long after it came out. Oh I see it was 1997, time flies! I cannot remember what possessed me to buy it, I have never been much of a Bob Dylan fan in the past. I made the seemingly obligatory purchase of Highway 61 Revisited at one point but for whatever reason he just never really spoke to me. Heresy to many, I know. I even recall a roommate in college going to see the man play not long after his heart attack and thinking "I really should see him, just to have seen him", but I just couldn't be bothered, lazy oaf that I am. So I'm clearly not a reliable judge of the man's vast accomplishments. I watched a BBC documentary about folk music awhile back and Dylan's story is unquestionably intriguing. ...The first studio album from the folk/rock giant Bob Dylan is a self titled collection of 'folk standard' cover songs and a couple of originals. The sound is characterized by the untamed and unique yet tuneful sound of Dylan, his acoustic guitar and his sharp harmonica sound. While this is not Dylan's most praised or powerful effort, the album sets Dylan up perfectly for what was the first stage in an impressive career. Dylan places himself firmly into the 'folk' genre here and with songs like 'Song to Woody' (written by Dylan), where he shows us his appreciation for topical and powerful lyricists. This album is lacks extensive lyrical contribution by Bob Dylan and, thus, we miss out on the most important side of Dylan's music. ..."Street Legal" saw the advent of a new Dylan sound. With gospelly backing vocalists, Steve Douglas's saxes, David Mansfield's violin and mandolin and Billy Cross's lead guitar to the fore, His Bobness's songs were enriched with a style that made for an easier-on-the-ear listen than the 1975 classic "Blood On The Tracks", without smoothing out the rough edges. In some aspects, they're probably closer to soul than he had ever got before. Mighty fine songs they were too. It kicks off with the enigmatic, swirling, oddly infectious "Changing Of The Guard", with that memorable sax hook, followed by the slower, bluesy "New Pony". The waltz-time "No Time To Think" is the longest track, clocking in at over eight minutes yet never flagging for a moment. ...Planet Waves is a strange album in the Dylan catalogue, coming after a torrent of abuse from his last few albums and then releasing the timeless Blood On The Tracks afterwards. The album itself is quite literally an album of love songs, although not in the form many would automatically see as love songs. This is really the contrasting album to Blood On The Tracks, with a much wider backing music used throughout. The vocals themselves do also differ, but this is perhaps due to the differences in the emotions that Dylan is trying to put across. 1. On A Night Like This - A nice opening to the album, brining in the sense of the band in the background and the different style of music,unlike that of New Morning and Self Portrait.
