Quick Response - and not just to breakdowns
Review of RAC by
sbenbow
Advantages: Cheap, can be used in almost any country
Disadvantages: Only valid for a year
...For all you people who want to go on holiday or are moving abroad - how are you going to travel when you get there?? For £4.00 you can get an International Driving Permit, which lasts for a year.
It enables you to drive in almost all countries, and avoids the cost of having to get your UK licence changed to a local one. It means you can drive from day 1, as soon as you get to your destination.
This is not so important if going to Europe, but is enourmously handy when travelling to the Middle East, Far East, or Africa.
And the service from the RAC in obtaining the IDP was QUICK. I sent the application form off on Thursday Lunchtime, and by Saturday morning the permit was delivered through the letterbox.
Now that's what i call service - both on the road, and off the road.
Keep up the good work RAC....

It Enjoys A Growing Reputation
Review of Emirates Airlines - UAE by
ashford
Advantages: Punctual. Good Fleet. Good in flight service
Disadvantages: Very few
...Emirates Airline is one of the most rapidly expanding airlines. This carrier has its HQ and hub in Dubai; it has been based there since its inception in 1985. The Dubai-based international carrier has already won a sizeable number of international awards for the quality of its services.
This airline has a very modern fleet composed primarily of Boeing 777 and European Airbus aircraft and currently flies to almost 60 destinations around the world. These include destinations in Australia, South East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Their cabin crew, pilots and engineers are recruited from various countries and most travel agents and passengers who know the airline well have commented on the very high level of proficiency of the multi-national staff. Emirates are known to place a lot of emphasis on crew...

Review of East 17 by
scarybyte
Advantages: good music
Disadvantages: did not manage to capture the North American audience
...Long before there was backstreet boys there was the british boy band East 17.They were formed in 1992 and took Europe by storm. East 17 was a boy band that once ruled the European radio airway. Too bad that they did not manage to make an impact on the North American public. Whether they tried or not i am not sure about. The band consisted of four guys which were Tony Mortimer he was the lead singer, Brian Harvey the rapper in the group, Terry Coldwell and John Hendy. East 17's music was popish but once a a while they would throw in a ballad that showed that they could also produces ballads. They really gave "take that" another british boy band their run for their money. Their feud was somewhat like what backstreet boys and N'sync had going for a while both band were topping the charts. This groups is best known for their up beat song...

Cheap candles and CHILI: UPDATED!!!!!!
Review of Buyer Beware! (urgent warnings about products/services to avoid at all costs) by
shaoli2
Advantages: no one
Disadvantages: health problems
...I use to read some Italian magazine about health and problem correlated to health food and safety of products in general.
On three of these magazines, in these last months, I read articles about candles and the problems related to candle wicks made with a great percentage of lead.
The last article I saw about this topic, was on a free newspaper distributed from a cooperative that deals with consumers defense.
They said that the majority of candles sold in Europe are imported from Far East countries, where this sort of manufacture is very common.
The problem is that these candles release in the air a percentage of lead, that is 13 times higher than the percentage enacted as by law. (From a study conducted from the magazine 'New Scientist')
The matter also arrived to the attention of the European Community, that refuses to face up...

An expanding regional airport
Review of East Midlands Airport (EMA) by
Mattnottm
Advantages: Close to 3 major cities, room for expansion
Disadvantages: Good question, none for passengers!
...East Midlands Airport has to be an airport that very little people seem to know about. Centrally located, and within a stone's throw of Nottingham and Derby and Leicester too, the airport sits right next to the M1 motorway.
It is the base airport for Castle Donington-based airline British Midland International (as it is now called) who fly from the airport to a variety of airports in the UK and on Continental Europe.
As well as British Midland, the airport is used by Britannia Airways as well. It's main customers are charter airlines, and freight companies. It is the 2nd biggest airport for freight in the UK. DHL recently built a huge new freight facility at the airport, and the runway was extended to allow larger planes to land.
Passengers use two parts of a terminal. The 1st part has been around for a while, and is possibly part...

UEA is an experience not to be missed
Review of East Anglia University by
sgcook
Advantages: Cool nightlife, Excellent learning, cheap beer!!!
Disadvantages: Not many!! maybe a little too much concrete for some.
...UEA is a campus based university, world famous for its architecture. - It is like a concrete jungle!! But dont let its exterior fool you!!
UEA is actually one of the top universities in the country, housing the biggest environmental science school in europe, and the internationally famous sainsbury centre.
The social calender is packed, with some really good gigs and comedy nights, and the LCR disco ever present on Thursday!
Only being 20 mins from the centre of Norwich is a bonus, too many shops to list, a mall, several cinemas, and a really good nightlife (Time on the riverside rocks)
(The teaching is half bad either!)All of the departments/schools in the university are well respected, but none are unapproachable meaning learning at UEA is not only top notch, but also fun and practicle.
Also the uni now has the biggest sports park...

Peterhead
Review of Peterhead (Scotland) by
Aspen
Advantages: Steeped in seafaring history
Disadvantages: Cold!
...Peterhead is the biggest white-fish-landing port in Europe. It is also an oil industry base (perhaps as an annexe to Aberdeen, but no less important).
It is known locally as "the Blue Toon", not as you may expect if you have visited, as a result of bodily parts rapidly turning blue in the cold north east wind which prevails here.
Indigenous Peterheidians are known as "Blue Mogganers", deriving from the traditional sea-boot stockings of the whalers which originally gave Peterhead its place in maritime history (check out the town's museum). The "moggan" was a stocking, and the Peterhead whaleboatmen traditionally wore blue.
As very distinct from the local rival port, Fraserburgh, whose inhabitants were known as "Puddlestinkers", but that's another story....

The potentially true world-wide n/w
Review of Vodafone by
tmn0096089
Advantages: Seamless global connectivity
Disadvantages: Expanding too quickly
...Who can follow the worldwind expansion of the Vodaphone Group? It seems that they are buying and selling, chopping and changing as they expand their network across Europe and down into South East Asia and Australasia. Shame their basic UK packages are not exactly the greatest compared to the others even though they have such a large subscription base. At this rate asuming that a standard protocol platform is agreed on Vodaphone will become the true cellular global network unless another Euro/US major goes on a major spending spree. It seems that companies want to buy in-place national infrastructures and user bases rather than build from scratch (time scales / costs etc) and are happy to shell out billions for next generation transmission licences - not cheap by anybodies calculations.
Interesting to watch - well not to the extent...

Probably the best airline in Eastern Europe
Review of Czech Airlines by
From_The_Continent
Advantages: Very good business class, good meals and service
Disadvantages: few east-west connections
..., though. Czech Airlines' main problem is the small number of flight connections. Although CSA fly to almost every city in Eastern Europe, most destinations are only served once or twice per day, often with missing connections to and from Western Europe. Thus a flexible Business Class ticket can be pretty useless, if there is no alternative connection that you can change your booking to. And because of the dumping prices on CSA flights, most other airlines won't except an endorsed ticket from Czech Airlines. The timetable deserves a major revamping to allow for better east-west connections.
Many routes between Prague and Western Europe are operated in codeshare with Lufthansa, so you can collect miles with the frequent flyer programmes of any of the Star Alliance airlines (British Midland, Lufthansa, Austrian, United, etc.). However, the miles...

Only the wise know that they know nothing.
Review of Eden In The East - Stephen Oppenheimer by
steerpyke
Advantages: wealth of information on ancient migrations
Disadvantages: a large book to deal with
...Guinea and the Czech republic.
Not only does the book present the argument for migrations from east to west, but some of the big questions, such as the origins of Rice cultivation, come under attack. Also most of the mythological motifs of Europe and the Middle East seem to have their origins in South East Asia, the obvioius one being the Fflood itself. As people move from on drowning homeland to new places of opportunity, they take with them not only the physical and technological markers, but their history and beliefs. It is in this realm that many convincing arguments are concieved, as the stories and beliefs of those migrants get a new home, subsequent generations naturally adapt those belief systems to their new surroundings, and thus lore and legend get re-located. So does all this mean that the origins of the very foundations...
