Auditioning for East 15

Advantages: Probably the best school to offer an MA. Not at all pretentious.
Disadvantages: Rapidly improving reputation but doesn't have the prestige of some drama schools

...I had a different experience of auditioning for east 15 than lubbly jubbly. I admit I came to audition for East 15 with prejudice. I had first heard of East 15 back in the 80s when I studied Theatre and Performing Arts at a local college. East 15 was not particularly highly thought of at the time. I spent 15 years working in the real world before deciding to make a leap of faith and return to my first love, Acting. I auditioned for East 15 because of advice from my drama tutor who insisted East 15 was extremely up and coming and was now giving competition to schools such as Mountview, Rose Bruford, Central and LAMDA. He really rated it. In fact he knew people who chose to go to East 15 over these schools. I still attended with prejudice however. I was surprised to find I loved the place and thought the audition process was very...

Studenting in East London

Advantages: Diverse Campus based college, in East London
Disadvantages: Being a student in London is not cheap

...is a centre for them to congregate in. However, the college is not isolated from its hinterland as the Mile End Road runs right down one side. Access to central London and the surrounding areas of Hackney, Limehouse and Whitechapel is pretty easy, there are many public transport choices. The university buildings are a mixture of modern structures and Victorian ones, including the People's Palace which was built as an institution for East Enders wanting to educate themselves. The Library is a modern structure less than 10 years old and is reasonably well stocked although if you're a masters student in politics you might have to use LSE's and UCL's libraries (which you can easily). Many of the college departments are housed in very modern buildings including Arts, Laws and Computer Sciences. The present Chemistry building is going to be...

A Good Base when Visiting London

Advantages: Clean, Friendly, Good Value for Money
Disadvantages: Road Noise

...On Valentines Day 2006 my sister-in-law gave birth to my niece, Rosa. As my brother and sister-in-law live in London and I live in Stoke-on-Trent I was dying to pay them a visit to see little Rosa. My brother suggested that we booked a room in the Parkside Hotel, Finsbury Park, as it is only a two minute walk from their flat and it is one of the nicer hotels in the area. We had a look on their website and were impressed enough to book a room for the following Saturday night. On the Saturday morning, we got up early and I drove myself and my boyfriend, Jay, down to London. I printed directions to the hotel and while they got us there ok, my brother told us later that there is a better route, which would have cut out sitting in traffic for an hour. But alas we got there in one piece. The Parkside Hotel is situated on Seven...

LONDON'S CALLING

Advantages: Pleasent stay, good food, central location
Disadvantages: Views from room

...eateries/drinking places and chose 372, which offers carvery selection. I was surprise how hot and fresh the food was. Not only that it was tasty too! We opted for lamb with roast potatoes, new potatoes and three vegetables. However, my only complaint about the meal was the vegetables; they were a tad on the raw side for my liking. That said I ALWAYS OVER cook my veggies. Dessert was for me home made apple pie and cream, while the other half opted for home made cheesecake ? both were consumed without any complaints and very much enjoyed. Our meal for two with drinks cost £29) Hotel: the hotel it situated in the Strand which is in central London and easy to walk to theatres such as the Aldwych, Lyceum, and many more. Come out the front of the hotel and turn right, and you?ll be heading towards Trafalgar square with Nelson, bear left and you...

What about East London?

Advantages: See above
Disadvantages: Do be wary late at night, but then that applies to all of London, really.

...The furthest east most visitors to London get is the sightseeing in the City; for nightlife, eating out, hotels, parks etc. they stick to the West End, Kensington, Chelsea etc. East London has the unfair reputation of being one great grimy, poor, dangerous council estate. However, Londoners, especially young Londoners, know it as an area 'on the up'; Spitalfields has already had its first million-pound house, and the Shoreditch area has taken over from the now long-gentrified Notting Hill and Soho as the capital's bohemian hotspot. You can barely move for small art galleries in Hoxton, there are also some in Bethnal Green. Alternative culture can also be found at the Lux Cinema on Hoxton Square, or the Space Theatre/Gallery in Mudchute. The EC1 loft-apartment revolution has done more than push house prices up, it's also encouraged...

East London E1

Advantages: Cheap, different and accessible
Disadvantages: Can pay over the odds

...Since moving nearby I've discovered that Brick lane is one of the most neglected of the tourist routes in London. While most tourists are scratching their heads and bumping into each other on Oxford street or Leicester Square you could be having a ball in Brick lane. It is accessible easily from Liverpool Street tube station or Aldgate East and is one of the more "arty" areas of town (for contemporary art). Banksy himself has produced many a piece along this narrow road. It is the home of a number of galleries and festivals. During the day in the weekend you can take the opportunity to wander around the markets that in the past sold everything from goods to pets! Nowadays however it is a great place to pick up hand-made jewellery. The market like the area is very multicultural with a lot of the goods being imported from Asia...

Go East!

Advantages: somewhere a bit different
Disadvantages: city boys & girls doing coke in the toilets

...Normally this section paragraph is where I write some witty (hopefully) mood setting babble, but this time, luckily for all of you review readers out there, there is no mood to set. So let's just get on with it, I am going to be reviewing Village East, it is where Snarf and I go when we can't be bothered to cook, or just want a quick drink, it is our closest drinking hole. Where is Village East? Village East is located on the fashionable Bermondsey Street, which is a very short walk from London Bridge Underground & Mainline station & about 5 mins from my front door. I have attached a map to help you all out. Why Should I go? There are plenty of reasons to be in this particular area of London, Village East is within a stones throw of many popular London attractions, such as Borough Market, The Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Tower...

LUXURY IN LONDON!

Advantages: Brilliant rooms, service, food, internet etc
Disadvantages: expensive!!!

...do have are of a high quality. What is near the Grosvenor? To me the most outstanding thing about the hotel, is that is right opposite the Apollo Victoria Theatre which is home to my favourite musical ever- Wicked. (Review to come soon...). For me this was a plus point as we were going to see it and it meant we could leave our hotel at say 7.20 and still make it in time for the 7.30 show. (We didn?t do this though..we were there way too early!...what can I say? I was excited!!!). The Victoria Palace Theatre home to Billy Elliot is also only a two minute walk from the hotel, which is great. I?d recommend both these musicals. Buckingham Palace is a short walk away too which is a great place to visit and there are often events going on at or around the palace. The hotel is also within walking distance of the London Eye, Covent...

Stranded in London!

Advantages: Excellent central location; good bars and restaurants
Disadvantages: Rooms a bit old fashioned; a little pricey

...Two nights at the Strand Palace and a visit to see the new Dirty Dancing stage show - bought for my wife's birthday. I even paid the extra £20 pppn for a superior "club" room. We were really looking forward to it. Total price was around £240 for the two of us for two nights (no breakfast). We arrived at Covent Garden tube station (the nearest one to the hotel), and after a little finger-in-the-air direction finding, got to the hotel on foot in under 10 minutes at a leisurely pace. Check-in was a little busy when we got there at 2:30 - we waited in the queue for around 20 minutes, but it was fairly quick when we were seen to. We were checked-in to a room on the 7th floor (there are 9 in the hotel), but we were *so* disappointed when we walked in. The room was tiny - smaller than our bedroom at home. It also overlooked the "well...
