East Midlands Airport

Advantages: Easily accessed, not too busy
Disadvantages: Not a huge range of destinations

...East Midlands Airport is a regional airport located in Castle Donington in Derbyshire. There are flights available to many European destinations, as well as Egypt, USA (Florida) and the Caribbean with charter airlines. I have flown from this airport many times and it is my favourite airport mainly due to it's location, ease of access and relaxed atmosphere. It is easily accessed by car from the M1 (Junction 23 and 23A) or the A50 which is the road I use when travelling from Staffordshire. I live around 50 miles from the airport but the A50 is a relatively quiet road so it's a nice 40 minute drive and I can start my holiday. I find it's easiest to travel to by car but there are local rail links and the airport can be reached from Loughborough, Derby and Nottingham railway stations, depending on where in the country you are...

EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT

Advantages: Close to where I live
Disadvantages: Catering and that long wet walk.

...I will talk about East Midlands Airport from a Nottingham point of view as that is where I live. Getting to EMA (East Midlands Airport) options. 1) Drive your self, about 14 miles down the A453 which can get very Congested during the Evening Rush Hour so allow lots of time. Also as this is a narrow two lane road subject to holdups when accidents occurr. As long as you prebook your Car Parking space charges not too bad but just turn up and you will have a hefty Bill. 2) Use the Airport link bus from Friar/Lane Nottingham. £9 for a 28 day return, but good value Group ticket at £15 (up to 4 adults and 2 children ) Runs every 30 mins (5 past and 35 past the hour) but in the early hours hourly. If traffic light approx 40 mins. But uses same A453 as above. 3) Taxi from Home with local taxi firm in Radcliffe on Trent approx £45...

Nottingham East Midlands Airport!

Advantages: Not too big, never extremely busy and friendly staff.
Disadvantages: Departure lounge a bit dated, in need of a Re-fit.

...Nottingham East Midlands Airport is a regional Airport situated in the Midlands. Serving a range of Destinations, and offering a nice experience it?s the Airport of choice for me. I?ve flown out of NEMA (Nottingham East Midlands Airport) loads of times now and it is simply one of the best Airports to fly out of. Its situation is a plus as its near Leicester, Derby and Nottingham and adjacent to the M1 the Airport is easy to reach. The Airport is well signposted and easily found. The Airport serves a number of destinations (78 as of Feb 2005 to be exact) and with First Choice launching its Long-Haul operations from there, even Mexico can be reach from the Midlands! Also in operation are numerous well known Holiday Companies, Airtours, Thomson, Thomas Cook and First Choice. Around 2002 the Airport launched its low cost operations...

Midland Strainline *UPDATE*

Advantages: Frequent trains, free tea and coffee
Disadvantages: Frequent delays, high ticket prices, uncomfortable Turbostars

...* NOTE: This route has been taken over by Stagecoach as East Midlands Trains. * I have been travelling on Midland Mainline almost every working day for over five years from my home in Leicestershire to work in London. I have seen it all. When the service works well, and you are aboard one of their High Speed Trains (HSTs) as opposed to their Turbostars, it is a good way of getting about. For the occasional journey to the Midlands, and now to Manchester, I would recommend it. But sadly, a lot of the time it is a complete shambles. Trains are routinely late (and that means more than 10 minutes late in railway terms) or cancelled. It has been getting worse. This is not just my impression. All rail companies must publish performance statistics, including reliability (percentage of trains cancelled) and on-time performance...

Review of Midland Main Line

On the buses!

Advantages: Friendly service, gets you where you need to go!
Disadvantages: Becoming expensive!

...Stagecoach are the primary providers of public transport in my area (East Midlands). Obviously all areas, buses, drivers, prices are different so I can only comment on my area's service. I have been using buses as my main form of transport for a few years now although hopefully this will be my last year as I have just bought a beautiful little car called Jasmine (now all I need is to pass my test!). Stagecoach run around 90% of all buses in my area and some routes have buses as often as every 5 minutes - that is a lot of buses! The bus routes cover almost all areas and almost any where you go in the area you are never more than a 3 min walk to a bus stop. Not bad, eh? Obviously this is a mammoth task and inevitably goes wrong sometimes. Actually, a lot of the time. There are frequently buses missed out, usually at morning...

Review of Stagecoach East Midland Buses

It isn't in Nottingham...get me out of here!!

Advantages: Well designed, calm and easy to use
Disadvantages: Getting there is not easy

...It sounds like a tongue twister and you could almost write a quiz question for it: it is in Leicestershire, but closer to Derby, however yesterday the East Midlands airport was renamed Nottingham East Midlands Airport. As you can imagine this has been met with uproar from councillors and residents of both Derbyshire and Leicestershire who feel that it undermines the fact that the airport serves the whole region. The airport is currently owned by the Manchester Airport Group who purchased it three years ago (along with Bournemouth airport) for £241 Million. Its almost continual development over the last thirty or so years has seen it transformed from a struggling financial operation into a big player in its market, not only serving the likes of low cost airlines BMI Baby and Go but is also now widely recognised as the largest...

Review of East Midlands Airport (EMA)

A good way to travel.

Advantages: Small and easy to find your way around.
Disadvantages: Some destinations are not available.

...I seem to be turning into a reviewer of Airports. It?s not intentional; it?s just that, for the first time in ages, I am travelling a little more than usual. We?ve just booked a holiday to Benidorm and we will be flying from East Midlands Airport, so I thought I would tell you a little bit about the Airport and what you will find there. East Midlands International Airport is located near to the southern boundary of Derbyshire. The airport 21km (13 miles) southwest of Nottingham, 11km (17 miles) southeast of Derby and 30km (19 miles) northwest of Leicester. The airport can be reached by public transport from Derby, via the 73, 121 and 123 buses. From Long Eaton there are the 5B and "Air-Line" services which run between East Midlands Airport and Long Eaton. There is also a ?Flightlink? coach service, from Chesterfield bus...

ITS NOT THE SIZE THE MATTERS

Advantages: Location, Friendly Service, Long Haul Scheduled
Disadvantages: Public Transport Links

...**NEW INFORMATION FOR 2005*** SCHEDULED DESTINATIONS SERVED Cancun Florida Amsterdam Paris Glasgow Edinburgh Nice Dublin Shannon Rome Venice Malaga Gerona Faro Murcia Prague Alicante Palma Cork Belfast Malta Brussels Aberdeen Geneva Dubrovnik Cologne Also all the normal 'bucket and spade' routes to Spain and Greece operate throughout the year. (Ibiza,Corfu etc...) I have used East Midlands quite often as it is the most nearest airport for me to get to, apart from the fact I live about 20 miles away, they serve Dublin which I commute to about 3 times per month. LOCATION The airport...

Review of East Is East (DVD)

Diamond review  Beware of "Strangers on a Train"

Advantages: Fabulous story, fabulous atmosphere and fabulous acting
Disadvantages: A very few irksome things but neglible

...Alfred Hitchcock?s Strangers on a Train - excellent movie! I could leave it that but of course I won?t. I?d had this 2 disk special edition in my DVD collection for a while before I got around to watching it. I really should have watched it as soon as I bought it. Not that I need an excuse to watch it all over again. There is no law that says you have to wait any given period of time before you can watch a film that you enjoyed all over again! WHAT?S IT ALL ABOUT? Guy Haynes is travelling on a train and get into conversation with a stranger Bruno Anthony. Guy is a semi-professional tennis player and is somewhat flattered that Bruno recognises him. During their conversation Bruno brings up Guy?s soon to be (hopefully) ex-wife Miriam and current girlfriend Ann Morton who is the daughter of senator. Guy is not very...
