I love Eastbourne
Advantages: Sunny, plenty to do for kids and adults, wonderful scenery
Disadvantages: I don't live there ........
...Last year, I started dating someone new. Someone who lived in Eastbourne, giving me the first chance in 6 years of being a mum to properly get away and have a break and a bit of sunshine on the beach. Of course, it's not the reason I'm dating him, just a rather nice side effect of the relationship .
Eastbourne is a large town situated in the south coast of England, which enjoys a large amount of sunshine and warm weather, amongst some rather wonderful views . You have the 4 mile stretch of pristine shingled beaches, the magnificent downs, Beachy Head, and all manner of wonderful things provided by nature to marvel at .
I've been to Eastbourne twice - once by train, and once by coach . Naturally, routes will vary depending on where you are travelling from, but on both occasions my journey from Nottingham involved a change at London...

Eastbourne Seafront Travelodge
Advantages: Takes pets; cheap rooms
Disadvantages: mundane room interiors; breakfasts being downsized
...We've all heard of this chain I'm sure, but did you know they let you bring your pets? In case you didn't realise, Travelodge will accept pets in the rooms, which is the main reason I choose them, so my Labrador can come too. You pay a £10 extra fee on arrival for pets but with the rooms being so cheap I don't mind. Travelodges are wonderful value for money. The most I've ever paid to stay in one is £39, but the last couple of occasions has been just £19 a night for the room, which if there's two of you sharing is excellent value for money. The Eastbourne Travelodge (not the Hellingly one - the newer one they have just acquired) is right on the seafront and when I last stayed there in October we got a seafront room which was fantastic. The only drawback was the fact that you couldn't open the French doors onto the little balcony...

Sunny Eastbourne
Advantages: Sunny Weather. A Floral Town. Nice Promenade
Disadvantages: Pebble Beach
...The stereotype that gets banded about seems to be that Eastbourne is a town renowned for being a tad boring and full of geriatrics. However, this is a grossly unfair and untrue piece of inherited wisdom.
Eastbourne, with a population not much below 100,00O,is by no means a small, unimportant, town. Its attractive living environment has meant that the Sussex resort has been able to attract some high-tech companies,as well as relying on the important business of tourism.
Weather wise Eastbourne ranks very highly. OK I am not going to exaggerate and suggest the place has sub-tropical weather but it does get more hours of sunshine than most other places in Great Britain.Even the international tennis stars that flock to the pre-Wimbledon tennis tournament at Devonshire Park are often surprised at all the sunshine.
Architecturally...

Eastbourne for oldies
Advantages: relaxing, fresh air
Disadvantages: so many super-adults
...As you drive from Hastings through to Eastbourne, the hair gets greyer, and the gait less certain, and then the age reverses as you drive on to Brighton. Lines of friendly grannies sit in the perimeter sun lounges of grand, sea facing hotels, waiting for the next cup of tea and cake. Chirpy chappie coach drivers in maroon blazers soaked up the maternal attention. We were there in the May ½ term, and had a very good deal on a hotel break at the York House hotel. (£39pp DBB per night) So many hotels, so little custom... We had a lovely room – huge – overlooking the sea. On the 3rd floor, so I think we got it because the silver-haired couldn’t make it that far. Food was a bit institutional and micro portions for the bird like appetites around. We were hemmed in at meal times, like some residential home, so I’d go...

Watch this restaurant flex it's mussels
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...While I've been down in Eastbourne for my holiday, it happened to be my boyfriends mums 60th birthday, and we decided to all go out for a meal last Saturday at The Belgian Cafe (formerly cafe Belge) .
Because the Bonfire Society had an event on on the seafront that evening, we decided to go for a late booking at 8.30, in order to watch the torchlit parade and firework display. It was a good thing we reserved a table, as Eastbourne seafront was packed, and I suspect if we had not reserved a table for our group of seven we might have found ourselves without a seat .
The restaurant is on the seafront, adjacent to the Burlington Hotel, and within a 2 minute walk of Eastbourne Pier . This makes it ideally located for the tourist trade, as you can't help but pass it. I imagine that if you got a window seat, the views on a summer evening...

ONE FOR THE HOTEL INSPECTOR
Advantages: Location, price & views
Disadvantages: Standard of rooms, maintenance issues, no parking & pretty much no standards
...Just before I begin my review of The Claremont Lions hotel in Eastbourne I would just like to quote the description of the hotel on its brochure, I hope this is ok I just want to give you an insight into what I was led to believe I was booking into.
"Welcome to the Claremont.. A grade 2 Listed Victorian hotel situated in a prime position opposite the pier and famous carpet gardens with its fantastic views across the channel.
The Claremont offers an excellent standard of accommodation, food, service and a very warm welcome. In our sea view Compton restaurant we take particular pride in serving meals using the best local ingredients.
You will be impressed by the sense of space in the public areas. The rich wood finish and leather Chesterfields give a feeling of a boutique style. There is a new ground floor bar offering service...

The Sunshine Town
Advantages: Beautiful surroundings, the seafront, sun
Disadvantages: An image problem
...Eastbourne?s a town for old people! Sure it is, but it is also very much a town for everybody else too. If you haven't considered visiting, read on... perhaps i can persuade you.
I must confess some bias. I grew up nearby, lived in the town for a long time and return regularly. It is true that the town is not perfect and that it has some problems but which town could say otherwise. what it does have is plenty going for it
There can't be many large towns blessed with Eastbourne?s surroundings, if you approach the town from Seaford on the a259 it is well worth stopping and taking in the view.
If you arrive by car, in all likelihood from the A22, car parks are well signed and are the easiest option. Eastbourne has a delightful one way system that could entrap you if you spend time looking for free parking.
If on the other...

Agatha Christie sort of hotel
Advantages: quietly luxurious but not pretentious
Disadvantages: None
...If you fancy a few days away near the coast in England but want to stay somewhere just that little bit more grown up and luxurious then this could be the place for you.
The Grand hotel in Eastbourne is an Agatha Christie type hotel. You draw up on the drive and there is someone there offering to take your bags.
When you walk in, you walk into a wonderful high ceilinged cavernous public area where the seating is arranged around fireplaces, paintings adorn walls and flowers decorate tables. The atmosphere created immediately made me feel that I was going to have an enjoyable stay.
On the left is a morning/lounge room where you can sit and have tea and cakes, help yourself to the complimentary fruit and newspapers or just watch the world go by. On the right is a ballroom style dining room.
There are lifts up to the bedrooms which...

Not just for the old folk
Advantages: Clean, pretty, and plenty to do
Disadvantages: The average age is above normal if you want a young trendy place
...I have always understood Eastbourne to be 'God's waiting room', but after taking a holiday there a few years ago I now realise that this is simply not true.
I can vaguely remember going there as a child and my parents having to tell me to be quiet and not bounce my ball along the sea front because of all these elderly people sitting in deckchairs frowning at us, so I was expecting pretty much the same atmosphere.
I again went with my parents, on an organised coach trip and stayed at a lovely hotel just off the sea front. The average age in Eastbourne is higher than elsewhere but it isn't a place just for the crumblies by any means.
It was a lovely (short) walk to the sea front where there is a beautiful beach. There are well-maintained gardens all the way along the promenade so it's lovely for a stroll or just to sit...
