Hardy's best story
Review of Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy by
superstar181818
Advantages: Brilliant plot and characters
Disadvantages: lengthy, incongrous descriptions
...Tess of the D'urbervilles is a plot revolving around the impressive landscapes of Wessex, where Hardy set most of his novels, and the eponymous heroine; Tess Durbeyfield.
The book is highly saturated with Hardy's lengthy descriptions yet gives a wonderful social commentary of contemporary 'Hardy' Wessex and the trials he put his heroine through.
At a young age Tess is thrown into adulthood when her parents believe themselves to be descendants of the oldest family in Wessex ,thought to have died out. She gives birth to an illegitimate child and is condemned by society.
The story is well written, however it is obvious how Hardy relied heavily on chance as many of the tragedies in Tess's life occurred only through a series of small flukes. On the other hand, the character of Tess is so well conceived and real that it is hard not to feel so...

WWF Smackdown 2
Review of WWF Smackdown 2 (PSX) by
scumfrogs
Advantages: Plenty of features, very realistic
Disadvantages: A bit expensive, only available on one console
...WWF wrestling isn't about lycra-coated, steroid-pumped men falling over at the slightest shove and never seeming to bleed, no matter how hard they are punched, full force in the nose. Well, ok, it is, but it's also good entertainment. Cheesey, predictable, bad acting, but good entertainment. My girlfriend watches Eastenders, I watch(ed) WWE (formerly WWF). This game simulates it all perfectly. From the first suplex to the final chokeslam, reality is the core of this game.
There are LOADS of wrestlers in the game - no, I didn't count them! In case you were wondering, the wrestlers are... Al Snow, Mr. Ass, Big Boss Man, Bradshaw, Buh Buh Ray Dudley, Bull Buchanan, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Christian, Chyna, Crash Holly, Dean Malenkom, D'Lo Brown, D-Von Dudley, Eddy Guerrero, Edge, Essa Rios, Faarooq, Funaki, Gangrel, Gerald Brisco...

"Kiss Me, Hardy"
Review of Jokes by
Newfloridian
Advantages: Amusing with a hint of pathos
Disadvantages: Too true I guess!
...The following anecdote was sent to me in a Christmas e-mailing from Canada. I haven't found it in the CIAO archives so I am sharing it here.
TRAFALGAR RE-ENACTED.
(Nelson would find it a little different if he was to fight it today!.......)
Nelson: Order the signal Hardy.
Hardy: Aye, aye sir.
Nelson: Hold on, that's not what I dictated to the signal officer.
What's the meaning of this?
Hardy: Sorry sir?
Nelson: (reading aloud) What gobbledygook is this? "England expects
every person to do his/her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual
orientation, religious persuasion or disability"
Hardy: Admiralty policy, I'm afraid sir. We're an equal opportunities
employer now. We had the devils own job getting 'England' past the
censors, lest it be considered racist.
Nelson: Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco...

Red Lita!
Review of Lita by
Mohammed
Advantages: High flying moves
Disadvantages:
...As of late, she's had her eyes on the Hardy Boyz. Given her ability in the ring, combined with her stunning looks, Lita could easily get her hands on anything she wants -- be it Tag Team gold for the Hardys or the WWF Women's Championship for herself.
She is just as high octane as the Hardy Boyz and her moonsaults and hurricanrana are very impressive. She is one of a very rare few ladies who can wrestle properly.
She may not be as strong as Chyna who can hold her own against any of the guys in the mens division but she has a mean streak and loves to get her hands dirty in a fight....

Review of Jeff Hardy by
paulmcdaid
Advantages: extreme highflier
Disadvantages: little puny
...You want to be dazzled and amazed?, do you want to be blown away?, well you have come to the right place when you come to watch the wwf. The most amazing wrestler, Jeff hardy will blow you away, with some fo his amazing feats of acrobatics. The swanton bomb, poetry in motion, to name but a few. In my opinion it is about time he split from his brother matt hardy who obviously isnt able to keep up with jeff. Jeff should be given a push for the ic title andf in a few years i think he would be making a claim for the wwf title outright. Why you may ask would i say something so downright stupid. Well basicilly for me the sports entertainment business is all about entertaining and there is no better entertainer then jeff hardy. Watch this space i have predicted that jeff hardy will win some sort of title in the next year and my prediction...

Review of Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy by
yingli.lim
Advantages: insightful and thought provoking
Disadvantages: bleak ending
...Do not read Tess if you are in one of those grumpy moods and need cheering up. It is horridly bleak.
Hardy explores all the avenues of chance and fate and comes up with a devastatingly heart wrenching outcome. I won't tell you what it is but just be prepared for it all. Symbolism, imagery and the link between one motiff and another is well done giving the chapters a sense of continuity. Every character's actions are intricately linked to another's and this explores the idea of accountability and how each person's course of action decides the path of another person's actions.
It is important to note that Hardy was greatly influenced by the Theory of Evolution of Darwin and thus there are certain comparisons of the different classes of not only society, but religion. Look out also for the influence of John Stuart Mill in this novel...

Can we be saved from our Dire Straits
Review of Shaun Of The Dead DVD by
REDF
Advantages: Covers lots of genres so will suit most tastes
Disadvantages: gore and swearing - but who cares
...Ever trod the same path every day and not noticed the world around you. You cross the road, trip up the pavement, go to the shop, exchange the same greetings, buy the same stuff and commute in silence on what feels like the last bus to the morgue. Yeah, so have I.
This is the situation that Shaun also finds himself in. He has a dead-end job in an appliance outlet where his juniors treat him like dirt, he shares a house with a control freak of a so-called friend and his best pal Ed - a slob of a man who is on even more of a downward spiral than Shaun. Oh and Shaun's girlfriend has just dumped him because he is unable to find anywhere more exciting to take her than his local hostelry - The Winchester.
This situation is intensified one day, when following a hushed up chemical leak in North London, the locals start behaving even stranger...
