Classic Eddie Murphy

Advantages: Brilliantly acted and Hilarious
Disadvantages: There aren't any - must buy film

...This is a classic Eddie Murphy film that is a must have in any video collection. The plot is quite simple in that essentially its a variation on the boy meets girl scenario. That doesn't sound like much of a recommendation but its the meat on those bones that make this such a brilliant film. Murphy plays Prince Akeem, the heir to the throne of an African country called Zamunda. On his 21st birthday he is due to be presnted with his future wife chosen by his old-fashioned and traditional father, (excellently played by James Earl Jones)but he developed a rebel streak when he hit 21. After an hilarious one-to-one with his father it is agreed that he goes to America to 'sow his royal oats'as his father puts it. He really wants to go and find his own bride who will love him rather than what he is, and so begins the adventure. So off...

Advantages: Funny, witty, light-hearted, no real gore

Murphy's War against a disappointing film

Advantages: Stunning visuals
Disadvantages: Lacklustre throughout

...Filmed in and around the stunning setting of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, Murphy's War is a 1971 film starring Peter O'Toole as Irishman Murphy, the only survivor of a German U-Boat attack on a merchant ship. It is set towards the end of World War 2. Murphy is rescued by Louis Brezon (Philippe Noiret) and attended to by the lovely Dr Hayden (Sian Phillips), a Quaker who opposes the war and is working in a mission. Revenge is on Murphy's mind, and when he discovers an old abandoned seaplane, he sets about finding the whereabouts of the nearby U-Boat, and plans ways to destroy it, revenging the rest of his crew. I find that war films either hit or miss, and it generally depends on the plot and how it is attacked. A good war film will have a lot of tension, I find, and this film, for me, was too much like going through the motions...

Eddie Murphy is Harlem

Advantages: Intriguing storyline and writing, great costume and good laugh
Disadvantages: Perhaps not enough action for mobster film, a little slow to begin.

...=Film only review(released in UK cinemas on 14/08/09) I can hardly claim to have followed Eddie Murphy's career closely, but as a teenager in the eighties I remember the glory days of "Beverly Hills Cop", and know that his career has had its peaks and troughs. Most recently I know that Murphy has been the voice of Donkey in Shrek, but this is his most recent comedy non-animated film. When I had the opportunity to see this film in a preview showing I was wondering whether Eddie Murphy would manage to make me laugh or if I would be irritated as I was watching "The Nutty Professor" - actually albeit not a Murphy specialist I guess by dint of his longevity I've seen quite a bit of his work. This film did succeed for me on some levels, but in others it was a bizarre and rather inaccessible mix. Billed as a family film it...
