The Jam House - Edinburgh - Live Band -
Advantages: Location, Staff, Band
Disadvantages: High Seats
...The Jam House Edinburgh
After several visits to Edinburgh Jam House I thought I would attempt a review. I have been lucky enough to attend ?Jam House? twice in the last 6mths. Since I live in Edinburgh I find myself trying different places from time to time, so rest assured I can happily compare this venue to many others within the city. This review is based on a visit that I made on the 11th April 2009. We were in a group of 7.
Location
Set in a prime location on Queen Street, the jam house is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre. Taxi?s are always nearby so you would have to wait long if that?s your preferred method of transport. In Edinburgh we are lucky enough to have 24hr bus service which runs from Waverly Bridge, this is a 10 minute walk when sober so add another 10 at the end of the night. If you able to...

A great hotel to stay at when visiting Edinburgh
Advantages: Plenty to do and see, within walking distance
Disadvantages: None
...I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions as we love to visit Scotland!
Whenever I visit Edinburgh I stay at this hotel, and book a room via the Holiday Inn Express website, as there are often cheaper rates available. Also I am a member of their Priority Club Rewards scheme which gives you points for every stay, which you can save up and redeem for free nights at any of their hotels.
I have had a few free nights over the years, and am about to redeem another. Being a member of this scheme also entitles you to priority check in , extended check out times, comlimentary newspapers as well as bonus points offers, which are sent to you via email.
It is completely free to join and a great scheme. All details can be found online at HiExpress.co.uk.
I last visited in February where I paid £35 for a double room for myself...

Edinburgh - it Stinks
Advantages: Lots to see and do, the city contains some stunning buildings
Disadvantages: The roadworks, the tramworks, the bagpipes!
...Town is just as interesting historically, but visually is very different. One goes from the claustrophobia of the Old Town ? with buildings packed closely together, with the sixteenth century equivalent of high rise flats in the shadow of the castle, to the light and spacious grandeur of the New Town and its quite stunning Georgian architecture.
Edinburgh Castle is no doubt the city?s most famous landmark and while there is no doubt it looks very imposing, it certainly isn?t the most impressive castle I have ever seen. I don?t mean to sound churlish ? and I finally visited the castle not long after moving here ? but compared to the sheer size of Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland for instance, Edinburgh Castle looks a little bit wimpish.
Having said that, Bamburgh Castle doesn?t house any Crown Jewels, and as far as I am aware doesn...

Exotica in Edinburgh
Advantages: Fun day out for all the family
Disadvantages: Can be depressing to see the animals cooped up, steep hill
...I recently visited my local zoo, which is Edinburgh Zoo, at my daughter's request. She has been here before, firstly with school about four years ago, and secondly with just her dad a few months before he died. The last time I was at the zoo was when I was younger than my daughter is now, on a school trip, which is pathetic really considering I live so near the place.
I have to admit however that I am not a huge fan of zoos. I have been to many over the years and while I appreciate the role they play in conservation, I have my doubts about the wisdom of keeping animals in captivity for humans to peer at.
My daughter, however, has no such qualms. For her the zoo offers her the chance to see animals without having to get close to them, something she loves and she has always enjoyed her trips to this zoo.
So off we went to the zoo...

Hen weekend - Apex international, Edinburgh
Advantages: Proximity to city, excellent rooms and brilliant staff
Disadvantages: none
...We visited Edinburgh on my hen night and I had previously stayed at the Apex City on buisness which is about 3 doors away from the Apex International.
All of our guests were arriving at different times as travelling from far and wide. As the bride I arrived first at 8.30am as my flight was an early one. We checked in but our rooms were not ready, the hotel offered to take our bags and then suggested an excellent breakfast eatery located on the Royal Mile. As we had just landed in Edinburgh we did not have much of a clue how to navigate the city - the staff in reception were excellent and even gave us a free map whislt advising of the best sights to see!!
Once we had had breakfast and done some sightseeing, we returned to the hotel to find that our rooms were ready (12.30) We were a party of 8 staying in 2 rooms!! The hotel then...

A brilliant aparthotel in Edinburgh
Advantages: Lovely well furbished apartments in a great location.
Disadvantages: 5 star means expensive... but you do get what you paid for!
... What is the Knight Residence?
The Knight Residence is a luxury aparthotel in Edinburgh. This means you have your own serviced apartments instead of your average hotel, making you feel right at home and having your own private space. The Knight Residence has a 5 star rating and in 2008 they were the top hotel for customer service according to Expedia... not just in the UK, but in the whole of Europe!
The apartments are designed to suit every traveller, so if your travelling as a big family or group of friends, you will be looking for the 3 bedroom apartment or, there are also one bedroom apartments and two bedroom apartments.
What's in these apartments?
The Knight Residence offers 2 different types of apartments (and 2 different prices!), Superior and Comfort. In Comfort expect to find a HD LCD TV with Virgin...

Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel, Edinburgh
Advantages: Great for golf, excellent facilities for a active or lazy weekend
Disadvantages: For visiting Edinburgh choose a central hotel
...To use up Marriott points before they expired, we took the train north to Scotland to the hotel we had found on Marriott?s web site which seemed to have it all for a lazy couple of days, the Marriott Dalmahoy. We were not disappointed. The setting beneath the hills and tree lined skylines were picture post card.
If you are a golfer then you are close to heaven with two 18 hole courses one, of which, is championship level. Other facilities included a very nice heated pool/ sauna etc, health suite and gym, a couple of bars and restaurants. To get the blood pumping there is a ?joggers? circuit around the grounds. The reception/entrance area is part of the old country house and the rooms were in a more modern block and entirely four star quality.
Service was excellent although I got the impression that the staff had all been on a ?have...

SPLIT DECISION FROM EDINBURGH JURY!
Advantages: Reasonable prices, easy booking, very central
Disadvantages: Expensive dial-up internet access, has the potential to be very noisy because of proximity to Waverley train station
...For anyone that doesn?t know, Jurys Doyle is a hotel and inn chain with its roots in Ireland and 36 hotels in cities across Ireland, the UK and a handful in the US, with another 3 UK outlets planned for the UK in 2005. Their offerings range from 3 star inns to 5 star luxury.
Jurys Inn Edinburgh is just that, an Inn rather than a hotel, and at the lower end of the Jurys Doyle chain, room-wise comparable with the Premier half of the Premier Travel Inn chain. Situated in Jeffery Street, central Edinburgh, a stones throw away from Princes Street and George Street, it is well placed to explore the offerings of this magnificent city.
Unfortunately, my reason for travelling was business rather than pleasure, so once again, I didn?t get chance to look around, one day?..
LOCATION AND GETTING THERE
As already said, ideally situated...

A lovely Scottish hotel
Advantages: Central location, attractive building, good customer service
Disadvantages: Shower had seen better days - otherwise none
...I had the unprecedented luxury of staying overnight in a hotel without my husband and (more importantly) the kids, when I travelled up to Edinburgh to attend a friend's wedding reception. I ended up booking a single room at the Cairn Hotel through lastminute.com. I paid £44 for a single room for one night. I have to admit that I didn't check whether it would have been any cheaper to make the booking directly with the hotel, rather than through an intermediary website.
Once I'd booked, I started to feel a little apprehensive about staying overnight on my own in a strange hotel. Lastminute told me that the Cairn Hotel was a 2 Star hotel and "a non smoking hotel situated in the lively theatre district of Edinburgh with the old town just minutes away. " I felt even more worried when I was trying to describe where the hotel was to my...

Shopping @ Edinburgh Waterfront
Advantages: Free Parking, Layout,
Disadvantages: None so far
...Back in 2001 this lovely decorated card dropped through the door. "Edinburgh waterfront welcomes you to Ocean Terminal. Being curious we packed the children in to the car and headed down to ocean terminal for the first time. Sit back and enjoy my review
What is Ocean Terminal
Ocean Terminal is a large (half million sqft) shopping centre set on the lovely up and coming waterfront near to Leith in Edinburgh. Set over three floors, ocean terminal offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and bars not to forget about the 12 screen cinema. It's all under one roof at Ocean Terminal.
How to get there
Thanks to LRT (local bus company) Ocean terminal is served very well with buses, you will see buses leaving Ocean terminal every 5 mins at peak times. Buses will take to you princess street and other surrounding areas to...
