A Sunday full of Science

Advantages: Never hearing yourself say "Don't touch that to the kids"

Review of Houstons Museum of Natural Science

Educational fun.

Advantages: Versatilty, price.
Disadvantages: The pencil is a little too thin

...This is the first handheld console I have ever owned. I'm 27 years old. The main reason I purchased the DS was so I could play 'Brain Training Games' or other Educational games. I played on a friends and found it very entertaining, I figured that if I bought one myself I'd challenge myself mentally and wouldn't just sit around watching TV! The best thing about the DS is the genre of games available for it, similar to the WII - Nintendo decided to target a different audience than the stereotypical gamers. I feel the succeeded in doing so. I read an article that a school had introduced the use of Nintendo DSs into children's mathematics lesson, with results of better learning and improved concentration. I am also a teacher and my children loved testing their knowledge on various maths games. The feel of the DS is also very nice...

Not Weird Science - Bad Science

Advantages: debunking some of medicine's myths & misinformations, funny read
Disadvantages: man on a mission and with an agenda but who can blame him

...Ben Goldacre is the very outspoken mouthpiece against really rubbish claims made by modern medicine or television charlatans. He is a medical doctor and journalist with a column in the Guardian newspaper with an uncanny bullsh*t detector second to none. I can?t remember when I first came across his ways of thinking but it must have been when I was looking for an answer to Gillian McKeith, a woman that makes my neck hair stand on end, someone I find appalling to the n-th degree. Lately I have seen him voice his opinion on London?s 6 o?clock news regarding LBC?s Jenni Barnett and her rather stupid musings on the MMR back in January and the other week on Watchdog when he was asked what he thought about some modern detox products. I bought the ?Bad Science? paperback when I was ordering a number of books from Amazon quite a few months back...

Disadvantages: A nightmare to get to, very busy at peak times

...Science Museum During the Easter holidays, hubby and I decided to take our children to The London Science Museum. Though it was a very long and tiring day, it was agreed we had an enjoyable time. The museum was started in the nineteenth-century. Its aim was to improve science and technical education. Prince Albert was the key figure in this development and he was responsible for the "Great Exhibition" of 1851. The buildings exterior looks aged and dated; if you walk around the rear of the museum there are various large craters in the concrete walls. These were caused by bombing in the last war and were never repaired as a show of just how much damage was done but the building still did not disintegrate. A plaque on the wall commemorates the strength of the building and its part in sustaining the war...

Magna Science Centre - A great educational day out

Advantages: Educational, fun, huge, opening hours, something for everyone
Disadvantages: Ticket staff not the friendliest, lots of walking about

...I happened to stumble on this day out, after being bought a Bungee jump for Christmas, but I'll talk about that later. This exciting and educational museum/adventure centre is very accessible, situated on the A6178 Sheffield Road, just off the M1 motorway at Junction 34, just outside Rotherham in Sheffield. It takes just over an hour to get to from the Midlands, and is open 10am-5pm every day except 24-27th December and on New Years Day. I should think it is easily accessed by public transport, although I went by car and parked in the car park right by the entrance doors. It is accessible for wheelchair users, with lifts and ramps throughout the huge building. I would recommend wearing a coat, as the building is really quite cold. It costs £9 for adults and £7 for children, but you can buy a family ticket to save money. To...

Advantages: An excellent course in a well-resourced department
Disadvantages: Does not qualify for incentive schemes. Very intensive.

...I took this course from 1999 to 2002. The full title of this course is BSc (hons) Science and Education with QTS. It differs from some similar BEd-type courses in that it has enough science content to qualify as a BSc (which has more kudos ^^) There are 2 options for taking the course. New entrants to HE can take the full 3 years. Those with a diploma/HND or significant work experience can take the 2-year conversion course. The school also offers 1 and 2-year PGCEs. In the first year, students cover material from all 3 sciences, as well as education theory. A mixture of level-one and level-two modules are taken, making the course more intensive than a standard 3-year degree. ...a 10-minute stroll to Hyde park and picnic amongst the trees and flowers? There are a few shops close by too, to buy snacks and lunch, including a tasty crêpery close to South Kensington station. I can't talk about a museum, without mentioning the shop. All children seem to have an in-built desire to buy a pencil and eraser. Here though, you will find much more. The shop is packed full of gizmo's and gadgets ranging from lava lamps, executive clocks, more down-to-earth potato powered clock kits, posters, educational games and kits and flying devices. Prices are reasonable, and there is a wide selection of cheaper items for children. The museum also has a dedicated bookshop which stocks a fairly large selection of science related books, ranging from general interest, to more specialised topics, for the more ardent reader.
