ASUS EEE PC 701 - Small but perfectly formed

...This review looks at one of many netbooks to be released in the UK over the past few months, ASUS's EEE PC 701 SD. The model I have is fitted with Windows XP and has an 8Gb hard drive. I bought it on special offer for £155. Appearance The 701SD is absolutely tiny. It weighs around a kilogram and is roughly the same size as a hardback reading book when in the closed position. It comes in a neat box along with instructions,a mains charger, a protective case and a system CD. It has a 7 inch screen which is absolutely tiny but is still perfectly functional. The unit has three USB sockets, headphone and microphone jacks, and SD memory card slot, a small webcam above the screen and a microphone positioned just underneath the keyboard. It has a small touchpad which is small but works in exactly yhte same way as a normal sized laptop...

...Well I just love this laptop. It is everything I want in a laptop. It does have a few minor flaws but the pros totally outweigh them. Appearance This laptop is a great looking laptop. Only the size of an A5 notepad, it is small and yet it still manages to look smart yet fun. I chose the baby blue cover for my asus eee but any colour looks just as good. Inside, the layout is neat and tidy with reasonable sized keys for this small laptop. The sides of the laptop look clean in simple as is to be expected with a small laptop like this. Without a CD drive, it allows more room for the 3 USB ports and SD slot allowing the back of the laptop to be left clear bar the power port. Overall, a great looking laptop. Advantages: Small, compact, portable, Works "right out of the box"

..., gave me steps to enable the Advanced Desktop Mode.....now it is much more XP like. Speed of the machine is good......currently runs at 633Mhz, but can be tweaked up to 900. It comes with 512Mb of RAM, and my particular model, has a door on the bottom that allows you access to the ram, so you can up it to 2GB (approx cost is something like £25) It comes with a solid state 4Gb memory, of which about 2.5Gb is taken up with Linux. The user manual does give instructions on how to install XP on it, and it does come with a CD recovery disc that also contains XP drivers. People on the forum, eeeuser, have said that by using NLite you can get a working XP OS cut down to 1 Gb. They have reported that XP runs perfectly fine on it. I am in two minds about putting XP on it: 1) I've never used Linux before and would like to get used to it 2...

Its been quite fun using and reviewing this one as its not like your usual laptops, and in many ways its a lot worse however at the end of testing it iv got to say I really like the asus EEE pc and however rubbish it might be I think I will end up buying one if some of the features just improve a little or if the higher spec editions become cheaper. I'm reviewing the new better version of the EEE pc this time as I reviewed the cheapest one last time and although it was quite good I though the amount of memory it had slowed it down and that there also wasn’t enough storage space of it. This dearest one is about £300 at the moment although I have seen it for £260. I do think they will get cheaper in the future though just like anything does so a lot of you might want to wait a little longer...

...I bought one of these 2 weeks ago and even though it is small and not the easiest screen to see on, I love it! Was able to easily connect to the Internet away from home, check files I had on a USB drive, without going to an Internet Cafe! It is light and easy to carry with you wherever you want to go! Only problem I have with it is that I will have to learn Linusx to do some of the things I want to do as my digital camera does not have a driver. Would have prefered XP but will learn what I need in time. All in all, for less than £300 I got a great deal and recommend it for all travellers or people who need to sometimes be away from home....
