...Usborne Beginners Egyptians Before we went to Egypt, we wanted Little Miss to learn a bit about the country and the people who had made some of the monuments. Because I like Usborne books, I bought this because things are explained in simple but factual terms. **THE BOOK AND ILLUSTRATIONS?** The book we bought is a hard back book because it was going on holiday with us, although it is also available as a paper back. The book itself is quite a nice size as it's not too big (about 20cm by 15cm) so it's easy for small hands to hold. There is a large colourful picture showing Egyptians at home on the front cover and simply the word "Egyptians"- we know exactly what we will be reading about. Our taxi-driver Mac humoured us as we joked that he might abduct us (it was dark you see) - I'm thinking of writing a book based on our abduction by Mac, but haven't got further than that yet?.it's not very helpful that he didn't actually abduct us. ...taken in the past, not just Egyptian treasures but any treasures. The Eglin Marbles for example belong on the Parthenon in Athens. I wouldn't like to think how many artefacts are in private collections. You can't take cameras in to the museum, which is a little disappointed, but I can understand the reasons. It is worth buying a book, our guide recommended a book shop just across the road from the museum that has a good selection of books. The museum is the most interesting I have ever been in, I enjoyed every minute in there. We spent three hours in the museum, this is adequate, make sure that you give yourself at least that amount out time. The museum was quite busy when we were there in March, but not over crowded. If you are looking for the best collection of the treasures of Egypt you can't do any better than this museum...

The book has been likened to a number of European novels, including John Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga, and works by Dickens, Balzac and Tolstoy. I actually found many comparisons with a Chinese novelist called Mao Dun, who wrote a trilogy about the changes in the life of a family during the Nationalist period, when China was slowly creeping towards Communism. I have no idea if Mahfouz ever read this trilogy, but I would not be at all surprised. I adored this book. It is the best novel I have read in years and I have absolutely nothing to criticise about it. At no point did I feel that my lack of knowledge about the Egyptian culture was a problem.
