In August 2007, we booked a package holiday through Thompson online for an all inclusive 3*/4 in Tenerife, staying at the Mar Ola 1. We have never been to the Canary Islands before and wasn't quite sure what to expect. Of course the website over exaggerates the pictures and they never tell you the full story, so I hope my warts and all review will help in your...

Mar Ola Park 1
Advantages: You do not need to leave the apartments in the night to have a good time
Disadvantages: None
...In August 2006 I stayed at the Mar Ola 1 for 2 weeks with Aspro part of the my travel group.
My holiday did not go to the best start as my boyfriend couldnt finish work in time to get the flight over with me and so he was going to be arriving hours later on another flight. So as you can imagine I was very nervous for having to travel on my own but i made it there ok, the Mar Ola 1 and 2 are next door to each other and we were the first stop for the bus. There was alot of us who got of the bus for both apartments all of them had been on my flight over and I knew it was likely most of them would be on my flight back so I was very worried of what they may think of me for going on holiday on my own (even though I wasnt). We all crossed the road and then the my travel rep told us to wait outside the Mar Ola 1 while he went in, when he...

It sucks, but in a good way
Advantages: Looks great, does the job
Disadvantages: A bit pricey
...a different route.
During our early research into our new kitchen we not only looked at the normal high street showrooms, but also paid a visit to a local high-end bespoke supplier. Not that we intended to fork out the kind of money they ask for but they are a good place to get fresh, contemporary ideas regarding design and appliances. What we found, alongside the wide range of units, materials and features, were a selection of extractors from a single manufacturer. That manufacturer was Elica and all the extractors looked the business. The bonus being that they were broadly equivalent in price to the premium brand German models.
From the beginning we were drawn to a particular model called the Om (no, seriously). This is a spectacular design, a million miles from any other extractor and guaranteed to grab the attention in any kitchen. Big...

Gone But Not Forgotten
Advantages: They don't do it now.
Disadvantages: I wish they still did!
...I was sorely tempted to ask for a new catty-gory, when blobbyqueen issued the challenge.
I had two, nay three, in mind.
The John o?Groats Ferry Company, Pentland Ferries, and Northlink.
All of whom (well the first two, anyway) deserve enormous credit for battling over the inhospitable waters of the Pentland Firth in all weathers and all seasons, to provide lifeline services to the Northern Isles.
But in fact, this opinion is far better dedicated to P&O, who last autumn lost the contract to provide ferry services from Scrabster (Caithness) to Stromness (Orkney).
Prior to this competitive tendering stuff, P&O?s St Ola crossed one of the roughest sea-passages in the world, pre-dated only by Viking Longships. She did so over generations. She carried essential provisions to Orkney, and returned with a hold full of organically...

An Orkney Quartet
Advantages: I actually like them even after all these years, which is unusual for me
Disadvantages: you might think they're awful
...I'm not writing poetry at the moment. It's something I do intensively at intervals, when moved to do so. Here's a quartet of poems from my visit to Orkney in 1980. They were written many years later when I discovered my journal of the time.
AN ORKNEY QUARTET
i.The Crossing
Ola races scudding clouds.
Arse to the wind,
She ploughs the fertile waters,
Scratching her chalk-white passage
On the cleft sea slate.
Swell-hopping fishermen
With feathered elegance,
Coast and swoop and, squawking,
Mock the un-winged clinging
To Ola's salt-licked decks.
Sudden sunlight bathing
Hoy's Old Man,
He casts his finger in the spray
And waves a rainbow arc of welcome
To tender hearted friends.
But we must go with Ola.
Like those of old,
Who flew the flag of family or foe,
Our course is set for Login...

Made by Masters
Advantages: Children love it, the characters are adorable, and you learn spanish
Disadvantages: Trying to get my children to pronounce the words properly, and there are no extras on DVD
...picked up a lot of the words Dora uses, although they did need a little help with the pronounciation, and every time I get home from work, I am greeted with Ola, instead of hello!
They also love to help Dora and Boots solve the riddles, most of which involve counting the amounts of legs, peppers and many other objects, they can see on the screen. It has defintiely enhanced their counting ability, it is put to them in a fun way, and they want to learn!
This is the first Dora DVD I have bought, and I am highly impressed, I will definitely be buying the others....

A mountain restaurant surrounded by olive trees
Advantages: Good location with stunning views and excellent mountain cuisine.
Disadvantages: You can miss the sign for the restaurant very easily
...of the white-washed farmhouse. There are two fireplaces with log burning fires. These are necessary in winter as it does get cold and damp in this part of the Algarve. There is nothing nicer than sitting in front of one of these fires sipping a glass of medronho and honey - it warms your heart and every limb.
The decor of the restaurant is simple - brightly white-washed dining areas with wooden beams, checked curtains and lots of rural bric-a-brac adorning the walls. Waiters are generally very attentive in the mountains, always dressed very smartly in black and white and most speak perfect English. However, it is appreciated if you can try to speak the odd word of Portuguese like Obrigado (thankyou), Faz Favor (please), Ola (hello), Ementa (menu). Vinho (wine) etc.
The overall ambiance of the Jardim das Oliveiras is rustic as is the food that is...
