Ideal Bedroom Speakers
Advantages: Compact inexpensive bi-wireable 2 way speaker 90W power handling
Disadvantages: Needs careful placement to avoid boomy bass. Synthetic beechwood finish is rather ersatz
...I brought these Eltax speakers to brighten up one of many bedroom DAB mini hi-fi units that we have in our home. In the main these mini systems tend to come with woefully inadequate speakers and so can be immensely improved by the simple act of upgrading the speakers to something with a semblance of frequency response.
I didn't want to pay a lot for a set of speakers which would, in the main, only be heard by guests but I did want to get something halfway decent.
A bit of research revealed these units along with several other alternatives were available at around £50 from Richer Sounds.
I set off to listen to these Eltax units alongside the Kef Cresta 10, and the Gale 3010.
Being a closet anorak and ex BBC engineer - I know that KEF made the driver units for many of the famous BBC designed reference loudspeakers like the LS3...

Possibly the best Danish export since bacon
Advantages: Bi-wireable; punchy bass; clear treble; good power handling
Disadvantages: Spikes can't be removed; possibly not the most reliable
...Eltax are what I would call a mid-range loudspeaker manufacturer. The Monitor IIIs have an RRP of £129, but can be found for as little as £60. They're available in either black or beech, complementing any decor scheme.
On the technical side, these speakers are pretty well specified. They claim RMS power handling of 90W at 8 ohms impedance; they are equipped with bi-wiring terminals (which means that you can run two sets of wires to your amplifier, one for the woofer and one for the tweeter on each speaker; this improves bass); they come with a five star rating from What Hi-Fi?. They are best described as bookshelf speakers - they are quite small, about a foot high, eight or so inches wide and about ten inches deep. The base of each speaker is fitted with four chrome spikes, which have an innovative two-part design that allows you...

Eltax Liberty 5 versus Mission 702e
Advantages: fantastic 'big', rich sound. Very good price.
Disadvantages: quite deep, need to be away from wall
...I suddenly dawned on me that despite 20 years as the owner of a decent set of separates (including an original NAD 3020!) I didn't have the speakers to deliver the true quality of sound which I knew I could have. In fact my speakers had been getting smaller over the years. My latest purchase having been a pair of JPW Gold Monitors about five years ago.
And so it came to pass that I had a revelation of the insanity of this position and took it upon myself to acquire a pair of 'big' sounding speakers. Being of limited budget (looking to spend about £100) and limited willingness to research all the products on the market I obtained a copy of the latest Richer Sounds brochure - having have been impressed with the pricing and quality of service for my last couple of hi-fi purchases(including excellent returns policy!).
After...

Eltax Liberty 5 series
Advantages: Excellent affordability and sound
Disadvantages: Is there any?
...been unfairly judged purely on the cost of their products, is it totally unheard of to get quality products without having to spend loads of money? Not according to Eltax. The treble is very clear and distinguishable, and the bass is powerful yet subtle and warm. I recognised parts of songs I had never realised before, even ones I've had for years! I am even using them as part of a computer music set-up and they are doing the job nicely until I can afford some quality monitors. Overall a very good set of speakers which should have the respect they deserve....

Angelcare Monitor
Advantages: Peace of mind.
Disadvantages: Remember to turn off when lifting baby out of cot
...I knew from the outset that i would be one of those paranoid mum's constantly worrying about my baby & wondering if he was still breathing through the night, so I invested in the Angelcare monitor with movement sensor mat.
The set includes a 'baby unit', 'parent unit' & movement sensor mat. The mat is placed under baby's mattress (if like mine, the base of the cot is slatted, or you're using it in such a moses basket, then you will need to place the mat on a firm surface such as a piece of plywood under the mattress), & is so sensitive that it can detect even the lightest of breathing. The mat connects to the baby unit which then transmits to the parent unit.
If no movement (yes, even light breathing counts as movement) is detected for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds on both the baby & parent units, enabling time to get to your baby...

Embarassingly competent speakers!
Advantages: Very Cheap, good sound, look fine
Disadvantages: Can look a little cheap, eltax name, expensive to upgrade!
...As a poor student needing to build a small, but reasonably competent hifi system on a tight budget I had low hopes for the Eltax Monitor IIIs that I purchased. After all, despite winning a 5 star what -hifi award, what can you expect from speakers you pick up for £60 from good old Richer sounds.
I got 'em home and set them up - first impressions good. They look reasonably smart in the light beech finish, silver details blending well into the overall effect - how can they do it for the money. By compromising on the sound quality...?
Once connected up... they sounded distinctly average. But then what did I expect. I had created a near optimally bad system set up. Single wired with cheapo bell wire, a nice free black interconnect between my marantz CD player and amp. One speaker on the floor, the other on a wonderfully rickety shelf...

Good cheap baby monitors (Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance Monitor)
Advantages: 100% portable, mains or battery powered, good solid units
Disadvantages: Can eat through batteries
...Recently the video baby monitors that I had been given (second hand) gave up the ghost so I had to purchase a new set. I decided that I didn't need a video one again or one with any other fancy gimmick on it (one that plays a melody etc), I wanted a nice basic and reasonable cheap monitor just so I could hear when she wakes up in a morning etc.
After looking online at the hundreds of monitors available (most of which are very expensive) I found the Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance and after reading a couple of reviews I decided that this one should do the job just fine.
Whats in the Box?
In the box you get a set of instructions whish tell you how to get started and how to use all of the various features these monitors have, you also get two baby monitor unit, one is the baby unit and one is the Parent Unit and you get two mains adaptors...

A Quality Monitor
Advantages: Many functions, clear sound, no interference, talk back
Disadvantages: Temp sensor maybe a bit sensitive
...We recently borrowed this monitor from a friend - it's on our wish list but we can't really afford to buy one, so we are trialling this one at the moment.
Due to us borrowing it, we were never given an instruction manual, but have still managed to figure out most of the functions with success! And compared to our Tomy Walkabout, this is a fantastic monitor, even if it is a little pricey (£69.99 I think)
The Baby Unit:
This unit has 9 buttons across the top:
-On/Off Switch
-Rec button (which I think is to record your voice but we haven't used this function)
-Page (to page the parent unit I presume if you've lost it somewhere)
-A button with three circles on - I think this is to increase or decrease the brightness of the nightlight
-Nightlight
-Volume up
-Volume down
-Play/Stop (the lullabies)
-Music (to select...

THE LILIPUT MONITOR.
Advantages: THE DESIGN ATTRACTIVE WITH BRIGHT SCREEN DISPLAY.
Disadvantages: NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE PRODUCT
...Well as things may be, this is my first time of using a lilliput monitor and I have seen that it is of the high quality type. The LCD monitor is capable of projecting high quality pictures and with bright colour display. The lillliput are the professional manufacturers of most TFT LCD monitors.
Now lets come down to the monitor's capabilities and features. The monitor also comes with a touch screen technology and with a touch pen included, that is quite marvelous and interesting to use and on the other hand comes with a remote control wireless and with built in audio, which produces high quality and likable sound.
The monitor also has English on screen display menu and with programmable auto on features.
Well I got this some couple of moths ago and have not gotten any problem with it so far. Quite durable and very easy...
