Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed (Yale Agrarian Studies) - James Scott
Compulsory ujamaa villages in Tanzania, collectivization in Russia, Le Corbusier's urban planning theory realized in Brasilia, the Great Leap Forward in China,...... more
Compulsory ujamaa villages in Tanzania, collectivization in Russia, Le Corbusier's urban planning theory realized in Brasilia, the Great Leap Forward in China, agricultural "modernization" in the Tropics -- the twentieth century has been racked by grand utopian schemes that have inadvertently brought death and disruption to millions. Why do well-intentioned plans for improving the human condition go tragically awry?In this wide-ranging and original book, James C. Scott analyzes failed cases of large-scale authoritarian plans in a variety of fields. Centrally managed social plans misfire, Scott argues, when they impose schematic visions that do violence to complex interdependencies that are not -- and cannot -- be fully understood. Further, the success of designs for social organization depends upon the recognition that local, practical knowledge is as important as formal, epistemic knowledge. The author builds a persuasive case against "development theory" and imperialistic state planning that disregards the values, desires, and objections of its subjects. He identifies and discusses four conditions common to all planning disasters: administrative ordering of nature and society by the state; a "high-modernist ideology" that places confidence in the ability of science to improve every aspect of human life; a willingness to use authoritarian state power to effect large-scale interventions; and a prostrate civil society that cannot effectively resist such plans."A broad-ranging, theoretically important, and empirically grounded treatment of the modern state and its propensity to simplify and make legible a society which by nature is complex and opaque. For anyone interested inlearning about this fundamental tension of modernity and about the destruction wrought in the twentieth century as a consequence of the dominant development ideology of the simplifying state, this is a must-read". -- Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, author of Hitler's Willing Executioners ... less

Empire in the Age of Globalisation: US Hegemony and Neo-Liberal Disorder (Critical Introductions to World Politics) - Ray Kiely

This book examines the relationship between US hegemony and contemporary globalisation. Many introductory textbooks on globalisation tend to be simplistic and conservative. This book moves things forward, providing a critical review of the globalisation debate. Kiely reveals the weaknesses of globalisation theory, and argues that we can only approach a proper understanding of the contemporary world order by linking globalisation to debates on capitalism, imperialism, neo-liberalism and universal human rights. He explores US hegemony in the light of these issues, showing how 'liberal internationalism' cannot be separated from capitalism, neo-liberalism and US empire-building. Perfect for students of globalisation and international studies, the book covers the following issues: theories of globalisation and the relationship between capitalism, neo-liberalism and globalisation; the question of state sovereignty, institutions of global governance, liberal internationalism, cosmopolitanism, realism, imperialism, 'September 11th', the Bush II administration and the war in Iraq; Bretton Woods, development, neo-Keynesian and neo-liberal capitalism, capital flows, debt, US hegemony and global finance, and global poverty and inequality; cultural imperialism, Americanisation, universal human rights, democracy and freedom, and cultural standardisation; and contemporary globalisation, US imperialism, and the question of progressive alternatives to 'actually existing globalisation'. ... less

Criminal Justice in China: An Empirical Inquiry - Mike McConville

The political, economic and social transformations that have taken place in China over the last half-century have had a major impact upon the formal methods, institutions and mechanisms used to deal with alleged criminal infractions. This path-breaking book, based upon the largest and most systematic empirical inquiry ever undertaken in China, analyses the extent to which changes to the formal legal structure have resulted in changes to the law in practice. With unprecedented access to prosecution case files, observation of live trials and interviews with judges, prosecutors and defence lawyers, the book paints a uniquely detailed picture of China's criminal justice system as it operates in everyday cases. Among the major themes explored are: bail; detention; torture; confessions; the role of police, prosecutors and judges; the work of defence lawyers; pre-trial and trial practice; and sentencing practices, including the death penalty. The book shows, through volumes of quantitative data and the voices of judges, prosecutors and defence lawyers, how the party- state continues to influence and control both the process and outcome of criminal trials through an elaborate system of audit and sanction, the result of which is a system of aggregate rather than individual justice. With a wealth of original empirical data, this book will be of significant interest to academics and postgraduate students in the general area of Chinese studies, human rights, criminal justice and comparative criminal justice. Policy makers, politicians and development agencies will also find it invaluable. ... less

Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Chinese ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: State of Dogs (1998)Mongolia's capital city Ulan Bator has a human population of 800,000 and a stray dog population of 120,000. The dog problem is being solved by a man hired by the city to hunt down and shoot dogs. The streets are littered with dead canines. Baasar is a dog destined for exactly this fate, but once dead, he reflects upon his life. He came from the steppes to the city and, alone, sought to attach himself to a young woman. Through Baasar's eyes, we see contemporary Mongolian life and the vein of mysticism and myth that coexists with the everyday. Poets of Mongolia (1999)Structured around the transformation of coal into energy, Poets of Mongolia evokes the meaning of poetry in the daily life of ordinary people who are trying to cope with harsh reality in a rapidly changing world. Through poetry a miner praises nature, a heating technician evokes man's destiny, a blind singer expresses her wish to see, and an expatriate finds the strength to survive in a foreign country.City of the Steppes (1994)With few words, the film captures fragments of urban and rural life in Mongolia, at a key moment in the fall of the Soviet Union, revealing the paradoxical aspects of that now vanished empire. After seventy years of communism, the city stands like a scar on the steppes and in the minds of the Mongolian people; an encyclopaedia, not only of decaying traces from the past, of old values and new meanings, but also of people, their memories, desires and conflicts. ...Mongolia Trilogy ( State of Dogs / City of The Steppes / Poets Of Mongolia ) ( Nohoi oron ) ... less

The most striking feature of British colonialism in the twentieth century was the confidence it expressed in the use of science and expertise, especially when joined with the new bureaucratic capacities of the state, to develop natural and human resources of the empire. Triumph of the Expert is a history of British colonial doctrine and its contribution to the emergence of rural development and environmental policies in the late colonial and postcolonial period. Joseph Morgan Hodge examines the way that development as a framework of ideas and institutional practices emerged out of the strategic engagement between science and the state at the climax of the British Empire. Hodge looks intently at the structural constraints, bureaucratic fissures, and contradictory imperatives that beset and ultimately overwhelmed the late colonial development mission in sub-Saharan Africa, south and southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. Triumph of the Expert seeks to understand the quandaries that led up to the important transformation in British imperial thought and practice and the intellectual and administrative legacies it left behind. ... less

This monograph considers the ramifications of the legal regime that governs transborder capital flows. This regime consists principally of a network of some 3,000 investment treaties, as well as a growing body of arbitral decisions. Professor Alvarez contends that the contemporary international investment regime should no longer be described as aspecies of territorial " empire" imposed by rich capital exporters on capital importers. He examines the evolution of investment treaties and investor- State jurisprudence constante and identifies the connections between these and general trends within public international law, including the increased resort to treaties ("treatification"), growing risks to the law's consistency ("fragmentation"), and the proliferation of forms of international adjudication ("judicialization"). Professor Alvarez also considers whether the regime's efforts to "balance" the needs of non- State investors and sovereigns ought to be characterized as "global administrative law", as a form of "constitutionalization", or as an increasingly human-rights-centred enterprise. ... less

Domestic Violence and International Law - Bonita Meyersfeld
'Domestic Violence and International Law' argues that certain forms of domestic violence are a violation of international human rights law. The argument...... more
'Domestic Violence and International Law' argues that certain forms of domestic violence are a violation of international human rights law. The argument is based on the international law principle that, where a state fails to protect a vulnerable group of people from harm, whether perpetrated by the state or private actors, it has breached its obligations to protect against human rights violation. This book provides a comprehensive legal analysis for why a state should be accountable in international law for allowing women to suffer extreme forms of domestic violence and how this can help individual victims. It is irrelevant that the violence is perpetrated by individuals and not state actors such as soldiers or the police. The state's breach of its responsibility is in its failure to act effectively in domestic violence cases, and in its silent endorsement of the violence, it becomes complicit. The book seeks to reformulate academic and political debate on domestic violence and the responsibility of states under international law. It is based on empirical data combined with an honest assessment of whether or not domestic violence is recognised by the international community as a human rights violation. "Domestic Violence in International Law [...] provides an original, provocative, and much needed legal framework for the coherent development of a norm against domestic violence in international human rights law...Dr Meyersfeld has developed a thoroughgoing analysis that asks and answers the most difficult questions often neglected by academics, lawyers and activists who dismiss the possibility that systemic violence against women could violate international law...Most fundamentally, this book is memorable for the hope and optimism it expresses about the transformative possibilities of international law. For without compromising such intensely human values as privacy, autonomy and cultural identity, Dr. Meyersfeld moves her reader with an abiding conviction: that inte ... less

EMPIRE STATE
Advantages: just worth a visit
Disadvantages: queues, but i expect a queue at a thing like this.
...There was doubts we would go up the Empire State building on our recent trip to New York. Hubby is scared of heights. Although it wouldn't have been the same I was going to go up it on my own to have the experience on going up such an iconic building and also get some nice pictures. It was on Thursday the 13th of May at night that we made it up there.
This building is open from 8am-2am every...

Empire State Building - A disapointment
Advantages: Views are amazing, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Cues, takes a long time
...When visiting New York, the Empire State building is one of the first attractions in any tourists mind, which is just as well for the people who make money from their visiting, as the service they offer has really plummeted.
My first visit to the building around 8 years ago was pleasant, up fairly quickly after a reasonable cue, look around, and then back down no hassle. The I would have...
