Reviews of eon
A big, powerful novel
Review of Eon - Greg Bear by
Saturn
Advantages: epic, ambitious
Disadvantages:
...Eon is a big, big novel. It has a huge scope and a fascinating plotline. A lot of extremely ambitious novels disintegrate close to the end, but this one goes all the way. It also has some of the best writing that I have read in science fiction for a long time. The war sequence is especially well done: the hairs on my neck prickle when I think about it.
Worth the monet, for sure. Don't bother with the sequel though, it isn't nearly as good. Another good story is Blood Music, but stick with the short story version. It says it all...

Customer service with a personal touch
Review of Powergen by
darby30efa
Advantages: Good service, free electrisave meter, excellent website
Disadvantages: A bit pushy getting you to stay with them
...About 18 months ago I used to be with Npower, but switched over to Powergen (as it was then known) after USwitch showed that I could save a lot of money with them. The switchover was completely hassle free. I was signed up to the Online Dual Fuel tariff which meant I would manage my account online and wouldn't receive any paper bills. I needed to give meter reading during the switchover, which was very easy to do online. I then went for about 18 months with very good service. The website works beautifully all the time, allowing me to view my paper bills as PDF files, and enter meter readings whenever I liked. Even during the period in which Powergen became E.ON, everything on the website remanined the same.
After a while I switched to their Green Tariff which doesn't cost much more than the standard online one. As part of this I...

Review of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (Wide Screen) by
LIZZY111
Advantages: everything
Disadvantages: none
...what can is ay about this brilliant film in everyway. the storyline is oustanding. everybody has to love this film. how can you not feel affected by luke skywalker and the rest of the characters. harrison ford is especially brilliant. in a cocky yet loveable i mean you just have to love him. the effects for the time are good but the remad eones are even better. the soundtrack is brilliant and moving. this is how every film should be but is not. the characters are compelling and wonderful and everytime i see it i feel elated and wonderful....

Review of Supergrass - Supergrass by
mjc
Advantages: Quite original
Disadvantages: Boring album
...'Supergrass' by 'Supergrass' is nothing special or groundbreaking. The notable tracks include 'Moving' and 'Pumping On Your Stereo'. Although Supergrass' music is quite original I feel some of the tracks to be a bit repetitive and mundane. Quite frankly some tracks on this album are boring with a capital B! The other 10 tracks include 'Your Love', 'What Went Wrong In Your Head', 'Beautiful People', 'Shotover Hill', 'EON', 'Mary', 'Jesus Came From Outta Space', 'Born Again', 'Faraway' and 'Mama & Papa'. Unless you particularly like Supergrass I would not recommend that the average pop/rock/indie listener buy this album....

Won't Last An Eon
Review of Granstream Saga (PSX) by
scream4bruce
Advantages: Smooth frame rate, decent combat, nice cut scenes, good music
Disadvantages: Short, lacking replay value, no faces, dodgy voice acting
...Spiritually the fourth of the Quintet quartet along with the Super NES titles, 'Soul Blazer', 'Illusion of Gaia' and 'Terranigma'; Granstream Saga is said to run at 50 fps (maybe 60 even) and the result is silky smooth animation. There are nicely done anime-style sequences (including the Laramee shower scene), however, with regards to the in-game graphics, there are slight pop-up problems present and the characters have no facial detail.
Outside of combat, the close overhead view used does not feel too restrictive because there is not much emphasis placed on exploration - many of the buildings cannot be entered and there are no routes between locations to traverse. The dungeons are average for design and puzzles. Granstream Saga can feel slow in places, like the section where Eon (whom you control) has to obtain pieces of Obsidian from...

The start of something special
Review of James Bond 007 - Dr No by
poodu
Advantages: The start of a legend...and a great way to start!
Disadvantages: Limited only because they didn't know how far it might go
...- Eon Productions, Ltd - an acronym for "everything or nothing".
It wasn't nothing, however, as it set the stage for the most popular and longest running movie character in cinema history.
The movie had it all right from the start...the girl (Ursula Andress), the guns (Walther PPK - actually a PP masquerading as a PPK!), the CIA connection in Felix Leiter and the "famous Bond wit"! It couldn't fail!...

ukpcdaz on JVC HiFis
Review of JVC UX-P 5 R by
ukpcdaz
Advantages: Excellent sound, style, size, functions
Disadvantages: Erm, no multi-disc - but I found that a waste of time on my last HiFi !!
...horrid, and felt tacky. It was one of those "sporty-style" systems - yellow, black and silver!
The JVC System - the UX-P5R. An excellently designed system, with RDS?EON; a timer (alarm); CD-R/RW playback; Bass boost (2 levels) - I found this was the best of all the Hi-Fi's I tested - even most seperate systems!; Optical out (for digital recorders, like minidisc); Aux. In; Two-tone display light; removable speaker Grilles; excellent remote; CD-Locking; CD>Tape direct copy - improves sound quality and automatically stops recording and turns over tape when recording from CD to tape.. it also adjusts the sound settings to get the best recording quality; auto-reverse tape deck; simple menu system; equalizer-by-genre (ie Jazz, Rock, Dance)- it optimizes bass levels etc. For the type of music you are listening to. It had 50w speaker output...

I wonder where Death has gone
Review of Reaper Man - Terry Pratchett by
Guzman
Advantages: Blindingly funny this is a book I simply could not put down
Disadvantages: Should not be read by somebody new to the Discworld series of books as a lot of the humour could be lost
...With Reaper Man Terry Pratchett takes his insane sense of humour one step further, he allows Death to take a holiday.
This strange event is all triggered by Death realising that his life timer is running out. Having his mortality suddenly thrust on him he decides enough is enough and that he deserves a nice holiday after all the quality reaping he has performed over the eons of existence he has seen.
There’s just one problem though, people who are scheduled to die don’t in fact die. Enter stage left comes Windle Poons a decrepit wizard who strangely enough is to be the hero Pratchett wants us to believe in.
Windle Poons is one of those Death was supposed to claim but neglected to due to Death’s new apathy to his normal work. Poons soon discovers that he is more alive in his undead state than when he was actually...

Great sound, great price!
Review of Mackie SRM450 by
Mr__Steve
Advantages: Top sound quality, physical design, optional subwoofer
Disadvantages: None as yet!
..., two Rockbag protective carry bags and two 6m XLR cables for £808 delivered. Much more value than similar JBL EONs and the like.
I have had mine 6 months and have had no problems with them whatsoever. I totally recommend these speakers if you need an easy to use, self contained full range set up for anything from speech, background music, right up to a small/medium sized band!...
