Canon EOS 450D - Superb!

Advantages: Extremely easy to use, fantastic picture quality, long battery life.
Disadvantages: I haven't found any!

Advantages: Superb image quality, well built, High resolution, low noise, Excellent spec.

...Canon have released an excellent performing camera. This camera is nearly as good as the more expensive eos 40D. The menu is incredibly easy to use even for a novice like me. The 3 inch lcd screen is very clear and simple to understand. The 12 million pixels creates beautiful pictures and gives you massive scope for enlarging and cropping and still create excellent clarity pictures after zooming in on PC. The ability to take raw pictures boosts massively the potential to create imaginative pictures using software such as adobe photo shop. I used to use a canon powershot but am very pleased to have swapped to this versatile camera. Prices for this camera are still dropping and I consider this far better value than new eos 1000D....

It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO? so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs you have already taken. It does not let you view the scene you are about to photograph. In my opinion this is a good thing because it forces you to hold the camera properly - up against your face where it can be held steadily, instead of at arms...

Canon EOS 400D - Great Value for money Digital SLR

...Having had a Canon EOS 350D, when the 400D was launched I was so confident of the brand that it was a forgone conclusion that I would buy one. The build quality is the first positive point. It is such a solid camera, not that you would bash it on purpose, but it'll certainly take a few knocks without any problems. The 18-55mm kit lens that I got with mine is also pretty good. This does feel a little cheaply made in comparison to the camera, but it does the job and has good optics. The screen on the back of the unit gives you all the information needed. Once a picture is taken it also gives you a preview. There is no live view, like point-and-shoot compacts and the latest digital SLR's. Advantages: Compatable with huge range of Canon accesories, build quality, ease of use, loads of features

...I've had this camera for eighteen months, and bought it to replace my trusty old EOS 1000. This allowed me to use my existing USM lenses, though do bear in mind that the focal lengths do change when using digital SLRs. The camera feels well built, and has not given me any trouble so far. Some reviewers complain about the small size, well I have large hands but have found the camera easy to use and well laid out. A welcome feature missing from my old EOS model is the depth of field preview. A less welcome omission however is spot metering. The camera is packed full of features including 'coloured' filters for black and white pictures. The menu system is easy to navigate, although it can be defficult to remember where some of the features are to be found. However the intruction book is both very comprehensive and well written...
