...I discovered this shop when travelling to Szentendre in February 2009 Belle Epoque, is the best place in the Budapest region to find Hungarian ?country style? interior decoration articles and authentic artisan souvenirs. Every item is handmade and made from natural materials with traditional techniques. Table runners, handwoven kitchen towels, century old crochet hook laces, decorative covers, old Hungarian folk outfits, embroidered pillowcases and so much more... The shop is located a few paces from Szentendre?s ?Fo ter? (Main Square), Belle Epoque operates in a typical Szentendre Mansion which has been built in 1860 and is now a national monument. The shop is equipped with beautiful, century-old furnishings. Hungarians are very proud of their national folk art. Perfume Perfection

Advantages: An enduring modern classic

...I first received this perfume as a gift on my 21st birthday and instantly recognised it as the perfume which I had been searching for. It has a heavy, sweet, floral scent which could be described as being both powdery and decadent. It evokes the opulence and mystique of the Belle Epoque era of silent movies and art nouveau. You imagine it should be worn with furs and precious stones. I have been using it for 5 years now and it is the kind of scent that quickly becomes your own (My best friend says that when she smells it in the street, she instantly thinks of me). I would say this fragrance is ideal for glamorous evening occasions, but to be honest, I can't resist wearing it during the day as well. Dolce Vita suits women of any age and it comes in a beautiful bottle which is shaped like a glittering glass ball. All in all, I think...

A right royal weekend

Advantages: Central, friendly, convenient, quiet

...give a comfortable and exciting dining experience. The food, as the name suggests, is Italian in origin and is beautifully presented, well prepared and substantial. The puddings are a dream. 2 courses with a really good wine, plus aperatifs and coffee set us back around £75.00 but worth every penny! The Royal is part of a small group that also includes the Graben and the Regina and it is the most expensive of the three at around 2000 Austrian Schillings for a double room. The others aren't much less. If you want to stay somewhere that combine the old world elegance of the Belle Epoque with modern standards of service and cuisine then the Royal is for you. Lecherous Lucifer

Advantages: thrilling, funny, tongue-in-cheek

The novel can be read straightforward for what it is, a well-read reader, however, may get some extra pleasure out of the allusions and references. When Lucifer drives a horse-drawn carriage through foggy London in the course of investigation and is then chased across a cemetery by another carriage, Sherlock Holmes? adventures come to mind. I?ve already mentioned Dorian Grey, Oscar Wilde may be seen not as the father, but at least godfather of Lucifer; the fantasy of omnipotence is not only dreamt by James Bond?s adversaries, sci-fi heroes encounter it all the time. Then there are the names, as a counterpoint for his brutal adventures Lucifer has a romantic crutch on a woman called Bella Pok, which sounds a bit like ?Belle Époque...

Ask the waiter to advice you on the best wine, they are quite willing to do so, and, at least with me, they did not seem to try to sell me the highest wine on the list!...

Bucharest - don't overlook it!

Advantages: Lots to see and do, loads of cultural and historical stuff, fairly cheap

...the nineteenth century the centre of the city was re-modelled by French and French-trained architects and even today, in spite of heavy bombing during the Second World War and Ceausescu's demolitions, there is still plenty of charming Belle Epoque architecture on display. This is partly apartment buildings with wrought iron balconies that are very Parisian but there are a number of very special buildings that typify the style. The best is the Athenaeum, a huge concert hall designed like ancient temple. It's the home of the Gerorge Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and the acoustics are said to be as good as those at La Scala. I had heard that the interior is fabulous and, although we could only catch a glimpse of the foyer, it didn't disappoint.
