one of the best boards for socket 478
Advantages: features SATA, dual channel memory
Disadvantages: lacks modern features such as ddr2 and pci express
...If your like i was before stuck with a pretty decent socket 478 CPU such as a Pentium 4 2.8 , then this is one of the best motherboards i would recommend to get.
There are lots of great advantages with this motherboard such as the size, its a Micro ATX motherboard meaning that you can have a smaller case such as a media centre case.
It has 2 DDR 400 (backwards compatible with DDR 333,266 and 200) slots which can be used in Dual channel Mode if both Ram modules are the same.
The northbridge chipset on this board is an Intel 865g which supports a front side bus up to 800 mhz , but you can also use 400 and 533 mhz bus CPU's with this board.
It has two SATA slots which i would say is the most future friendly part on the motherboard meaning it wont be a problem when upgrading your hard drive or some optical drives which are now...

TH7-II Raid - a classic & still up with the best
Advantages: reliable, very upgradable, fast and very over-clockable.
Disadvantages: no HT support, only USB 1.1, did anybody get built in LAN?
....1 Platinum. Since I've never used the built in one, I can't comment on it. Generally though they are not up to the standard of the high end Creative cards.
I installed 2x 200gig IBM 7200rpm deskstars on the primary standard ide, and a dvd writer and cd writer on the secondary standard ide. On the Highpoint I installed 4x 200gig IBM 7200rpm desktars (primary ide master+slave and secondary ide master+slave). I use them as extra drives only, not as RAID. This is because if you upgrade the highpoint BIOS it can sometimes break the RAID stripe. I didn't want to risk that. This board supports ATA100 max. ATA133 drives work fine, but you will only get ATA100 transfer speeds through the bus.
This board started life with a socket 478 Pentium4 Williamette processor at 1.5GHz. This lasted me for a while, and ran happily when clocked with a 110fsb x4...

mATX - Small, Sound, Old
Advantages: ATX-compatible, Power-efficient, Inexpensive, Supports ATA and SATA
Disadvantages: Obsolete DDR Technology, Unsuitable for Gamers
...ASRock P4i65G is a compact motherboard for that tiny PC case.
Because it was manufactured for microtower standard computer boxes, it lacks the strengths that the following customers would desire: workstation administrators, hardcore gamers, media professionals. In other words, this motherboard is currently suitable only for those with medium requirements (if you wish to buy it for a new computer) and highly recommended for Socket 478 processor owners.
Introducing mATX
Power Capacity
Most mATX computers support power supplies of no more than 350W, and the case is sometimes too small for you to stuff two hard disks. This motherboard can easily house a P4 3.4 GHz HT (one of the most powerful and watt-guzzling monocore CPUs) that can compete with modern dual core processors, multiple DVD-ROMs and hard disk...

Micro ATX board
Advantages: Good stable board
Disadvantages: Not many PCI slots
...Motherboards are critical to any computer. The selection is wide and the features each contains need to be closely looked at.
I was building a new PC and I came across this motherboard. It is a micro ATX board so is alot smaller than any ATX board so therefore has the disadvantage of not having much opportunity for expansion.
There are only three PCI slots which is fine if you do not require many but considering that a modem, soundcard and now wireless cards need PCI slots then this does not leave many options if you wish to install these.
The board itself has many features and comes with onboard graphics and sound. The advantage of this is that money is saved on needing to buy a graphics card and sound card. The disadvantage of this is that if you do use the onboard graphics it uses your system memory and therefore can slow...

Asrock P4V88 Skt478 Motherboard
Advantages: Easy Setup, Great Performance, Cheap but Reliable
Disadvantages: Some components hard to reach
...and hardware monitoring. The only thing I would advise is to connect the cables from your computer case BEFORE you install the processor etc, otherwose it will be very difficult to reach some of them once the board is mounted in the case. Also, good dexterity is needed to get the connectors into the pins, as they are located quite close together.
All the components fit smoothly and easily into/onto the board, and not much force is required. This an ATX board, and Asrock have made the most of the space that they do use. It should be noted that there is no graphics controller on this board, but a decent card can be bought for around £27 retail. There is 5.1 channel sound, LAN and firewire though, so a basic system won't need much additional hardware.
No real configuration of the board is needed, and no jumpers need to be set. I installed...

Top notch for your money
Advantages: Jumperless. Loads of features. Loads of BIOS settings to play with. Everything!
Disadvantages: Expensive to some
...Not only does this wonderful Socket A motherboard have loads of great features, it also comes in a rather nifty plastic covered box with rope handle!
The Epox 8KHA+ KT266/A has been the recipient of loads of positive reviews from top Internet Hardware sites since its release a short time ago. If you check the Epox website (http://www.epox.com) you will be able to read any of the reviews (unbiased!). My humble review will try to outline the main features of this board and be as non-techie as possible, but the professional reviews will go that bit further. OK, on with the review! ?..
Once you see the container box of the 8KHA+, you will have a fair idea of the sort of quality that is inside and you won?t be disappointed. The 8KHA+ is a top end board for those who wish to get the most out of their Socket A Athlons/Durons. The box...

Mother of them all
Advantages: Reliable, easy to fit/setup, huge expansion capability
Disadvantages: may need to upgrade pc case to fit it in.
...My pc was running at a snails pace so I decided to upgrade the processor to AMD?s Athlon XP 2gb chip, this required a motherboard update. The Epox EP-8KTA+ presented the solution.
The motherboard comes with a user manual, floppy ribbon, hard drive ribbon cable, usb cable and drivers and utility disk.
The Epox board supports the AMD Athlon and Duron processors from 600 MHz to 1.3 GHz, However a new BIOS patch allows it to run up to 2.2 GHz.
The Board is of the ATX form factor and requires at least a midi tower to fit in, dimensions are 305mm (H) x 245mm (d).
The I/O (In/Out) back panel has PS/2 keyboard and mouse sockets, 1 parallel printer port, sound and microphone lines, 2 com ports and 4 usb ports.
The memory is pc133/vc133 168 pin DIMM and the board can take 32 MB to 1.5 GB thanks to the 4 DIMM slots available
VIA...

If only more motherboards were designed like this
Advantages: Very stable DDR266 Motherboard.
Disadvantages: Nearly cold product being superseded by newer standards DDR333/ATA133/USB2/Firewire etc
...This motherboard has been my choice in my personal machine and I have used the epox 8KHAL and 8KHAL+ in customers machines past all have served there role's flawlessly, epox seem to make fine boards.
From start to finish epox have made this motherboard very attractive with a neat little draw & string packageing.
Since I got it last year, it has never ever failed me and I have really came to appreciate using a stable computer as a result.

Best consumer home server in the day
Advantages: Everything about it, sound, RAID, 12 IDE built in, OC able, stable.
Disadvantages: Very hard to find, no more than 3gb memory, older hardware, single-core cpu.
...someone has a bios that will allow 400fsb with some tinkering, but with memory limited to 333fsb, you won't see much improvement. I've had the Iwill MPX2's next to it and while the MPX2 is a SMP and could hold two cpu's, this one was always the most stable out of all the KT400 boards out there in the day (best of Epox, in my opinion- better than the more popular OC'ing ones)...
If you DO find one (it's 2009 now, so good luck), I recommend 2-3gb ddr-333, a FSB of 333 and a fast amd xp2700 or such... add in the fasted old ATI 9800pro 512 video and a dual 100/1000 an card and you're good to go... put all those old 5400 and 7200 IDE drives together in here (or get some of the new 500+gb/1TB IDE's! =8+TB's without any add-in cards) with a 550+w PSU (make sure you have a PSU that can handle the CPU and HD's!!!) and a a big 120mm fan blowing air...

A good mainboard
Advantages: Stable; not that expensive
Disadvantages: There a newer chip technologie
...First I have to apologize my English. Coming from the German Ciao I just thought about writing in English and so I?ll try it.
One of the most important part of a PC is the Mainboard (MB), because all informations has to pass it. So I was very unhappy, that I had problems with my new one at the beginning.
The MB has the old chip KT266A. Now the newer KT333 is already available. But I prefered to buy it, because it is a well developed one and the new KT333 is just 5%-10% quicker. Normal PC-User don?t notice that little more performance.
? ? ? A little bit about the Mainboard ? ? ?
The handbook is ok. It came in English *grin* but there is a German one available on www.epox .de. Ok, ok...*grin* The information in the book are ok. Detailled information what happens if you change things in the BIOS are not clearly made...
