Epson Photo R285 printer

Advantages: excellent all round while working
Disadvantages: Subject to ink problems but Ok with insurance

...The Epson Sylus Photo R285 is an excellent printer while it is working. In 12 months I have had two of these printers and both have have had the same fault, that being the sudden inability to recognise full ink cartridges and mule like refusing to budge in any direction.This problem occurs about 2-3 months into its use and seems to be brought on by changing one cartridge. Technical support recognise that there is a fault with apparently no remedy. Fortunately i took out a 3 year guarantee with this and PC World have change the printer. An excellent printer but I would recommend any purchaser to take out an insurance. I am going back for a third but I think this might be the last if the fault occurs again!...

Epson Stylus Photo R300 - Good, reliable printer.

Advantages: Various settings, easy to use.
Disadvantages: Bulky, takes up a lot of room.

...This is a good, reliable printer, ideal for use at home. Although it markets itself as a photo printer, settings can be adjusted so that 'best picture' printing is not used for plain text or draft copies. It is easy to use, however it can sometimes be unresponsive to commands and buttons may need to be pressed several times - However mine is now several years old. The printer is quite bulky and does take up quite a bit of room when in use, however paper trays can be folded away when not required. I have found 'paper jam' will often occur but usually after the printer has been in heavy use. All in all a good, standard printer. Nothing special but it does the job it was made to do....

Epson R2880... Superb printer and well worth the premium price

Advantages: Well built, superb quality prints
Disadvantages: You have to switch black inks for glossy and matte finishes

...also a tray for holding printable CD and DVD's. Setting up is really easy. You turn the unit on, install the eight ink cartridges and let it prime and ready the printer. One extra step though, before you install the inks. You have to decide what sort of paper you are going to print on first, matte or glossy. This choice determines whether you should install the matte black or photo black ink cartridge (both supplied). If you choose one and later decide to swap to an opposing paper type, you have to swap inks. This is not a big problem, but it does use (and waste) a little ink in the process. Once the printer is ready, you need to install at the very minimum, the printer driver. I would suggest downloading the latest version from the Epson website, so you are right up-to-date. You can also install extra software too, like a photo manager...

New photo printer from Epson is a snap!

Advantages: Cheap photo printer. Excellent photo quality. Prints CDs
Disadvantages: Cartridges are pricey and you need 6 but you only need to replace one at a time

...cartridges which are supplied. It came without a USB cable but just about every home has one or more these days so that was not a problem. It was supplied with a power lead which is only two core as opposed to the more normal three prong cable connector commonly in use. The printer has no detailed intruction manual included in the box but this is available online from Epson's website. A quick installation guide was supplied and installation and setup was completed within ten minutes with no glitches on my old 450MHz PC I first tested the print quality with a photo from my digital camera using the free 10 sheet pack of 6"x4" Epson Premium Glossy photo paper. The quality of the print amazed me. I can't fault it, it is indistinguishable from prints I have done online with Ofoto and better than some of the other online services. Standard...

Epson SX515W is an excellent printer.

Advantages: Wireless function is easy, print from anywhere.
Disadvantages: While the black finish is nice, it really is a dust magnet.

In box with the printer is the power cable, USB cable (you need these for the initial set up), a set of cartridges and a small pack of photo paper. Was really easy to set up. We use 3 laptops at home and for the first set up I needed the USB cable. Follow the prompts on the discs and it automatically detects your wireless network. For the 2 additional laptops, I didn't need the USB cable and just had to set them up as "additional computers". It's really easy to install the cartridges. Printer has a helpful little screen to prompt you. Scanning and copying functions are really good. When you scan an item, so long as you computer is switched on, it will appear on the little screen, just select it and it scans...

Advantages: Print from memory cards + other external usb devices such as cd-roms. Excellent print quality and quite. 6 cartridge system gives amazing results

I was originally going for a cheap £50-£60 photo printer but after reading quite a few reviews of some it seemed the best all round value for money were the £100 ish printers. ...looked good. However, on printing a few more, it became clear the colours were slightly oversaturated. This may be the driver, it may be the printer. Either way, you may have some fiddling and tweaking to do if you are fussy about final output. For your average Joe printing out his family snapshots it produces good enough results to please. A bonus is the use of Claria long life inks. Photos printed using inkjets tend to fade alarmingly quickly, especially in bright light and the various manufacturers all have different tricks to reduce this. Epson's Claria system claims some 200 years I am told but that would be under ideal conditions i.e. use the ink and paper they specify and keep them in the dark. However, you'll still see good fade resistance under more normal conditions, just don't expect a hundred years. Also worth noting is...
