Colour laser printing at its best
Advantages: brilliant, non wrinkly, perfectly reproduced printouts
Disadvantages: expensive - both to buy, and to run.
...Now before I start, this opinion may not be for the home users out there, as this printer starts selling at around £1,500. Right. Now that I've scared all my sensible readers away, I'll continue talking to the 'not so sensible' people who are going to find out about one hell-of-a colour laser printer!
We recently purchased one of these huge A4 colour laser printers at work, and it has been used constantly ever since for flyers, brochures - in fact anything with a hint of colour, just for an excuse to use it!
The Epson C2000's models
There are four different models available (we chose the basic model) :
* AcuLaser C2000 - 32MB mem, 500 sheet cassette and 150 sheet tray.
* AcuLaser C2000PS - 96MB mem, PostScript 3, 500 sheet cassette and 150 sheet tray.
* AcuLaser C2000DT - 96MB mem, duplex printing...

Hardly A cuteLaser
Advantages: Superb Colour Quality
Disadvantages: Bit big, bit noisy and a bit fiddly
...I've lived with ink-jet printers for years. Canon gave me the first bubble-jet and Epson have supplied the later models - various models of Stylus including C80, C84 and C86.
They get heavy use for work and all have given some headaches with clogged heads.
So a mixture of desperation and hope, together with keen pricing, has led me down the colour laser printer road.
The Epson Aculaser may not be a cute laser, but it does work a treat.
Specification
++++++++++
I'll not go into all the technical stuff, it is readily available from Epson's site or any of the dealers.
But what you need to know is that this printer uses a laser and is a 4 pass machine, doing each colour separately.
That makes it a tad slower than single pass machines... but much cheaper.
It uses four toner cartridges - black, magenta, cyan and yellow...

EPSON Stylus SX515W - stylish, capable but not perfect
Advantages: Stylish, fast printing, quality output, good range of functions
Disadvantages: A bit noisy, poor manuals
... Introduction
We have three computers in the house, one desktop & two laptops which are used wirelessly. Previously, I had a simple low cost printer connected to the desktop. This was fine but in recent months use of the desktop has declined so it has stood unused most of the time. To print it was a case of transfer document to USB stick, switch on desktop, print from USB stick, switch off desktop. What a pain !!
I decided enough was enough and after researching the market for multi-function wireless devices I decided to purchase the Epson SX515W as it looked good, had all the features I wanted and was a good price.
Installation
The salesman advised me to set it up on the desktop initially as it would be hard wired via USB. If you hear this don't let it put you off. The set-up works fine even if you have a single...

Epson SX515W is an excellent printer.
Advantages: Wireless function is easy, print from anywhere.
Disadvantages: While the black finish is nice, it really is a dust magnet.
...After having Epson printers before, I decided to go for another one. But this time, one with wireless capabilities.
In box with the printer is the power cable, USB cable (you need these for the initial set up), a set of cartridges and a small pack of photo paper.
Was really easy to set up. We use 3 laptops at home and for the first set up I needed the USB cable. Follow the prompts on the discs and it automatically detects your wireless network. For the 2 additional laptops, I didn't need the USB cable and just had to set them up as "additional computers".
It's really easy to install the cartridges. Printer has a helpful little screen to prompt you.
Scanning and copying functions are really good. When you scan an item, so long as you computer is switched on, it will appear on the little screen, just select it and it scans...

No cheating with this Epson Cheetah!
Advantages: Clear colours
Disadvantages: A bit pricey
...Printers are marvellous things when they work!We bought an Epson DX4000 a couple of years ago after problems with our HP printer. It was reduced in Tesco and as it is a photo copier and printer we thought it was a bargain but decided to check out the cost of the cartridges before buying.
We have used various makes of cartridges over the years for previous printers but had been having problems and always having to clean to get good printing so we were wasting ink.
We got sample size cartridges with the printer but bought a Multipack so we were ready when a replacement was needed. The Multipack has 4 cartridges, 1 of each black, yellow, magenta and cyan. The box is blue with a picture of a Cheetah and is in the Cheetah range, there are other ranges like Monkey. Hummingbird and Seahorse makinh it easy to spot the one you want to buy...

A Good, Solid Printer
Advantages: Reliable, handles high volumes
Disadvantages: Looks pants
...May 2004 and decided a huge clear out was essential. This went from the huge server right down to keyboard and mice, printers included. We use this as network printer and to date has been extremely reliable, considering it's being used in an accounts department and sees a high volume of statements, letter and invoices running through it.
SO WHAT DOES THE MANUFACTURER SAY?
"The Epson AcuLaser C8600 is the perfect professional printing solution for users who require exceptional quality colour and mono output on a range of media formats from C5 up to A3W in size. The heart of the AcuLaser C8600 is its powerful printer controller. A high performance 400 MHz processor and a uniquely designed Epson AcuLaser Color ASIC combine to ensure maximum throughput by the rapid processing of even the most complex and demanding color print jobs...

T0715 for Epson printers
Advantages: cheaper to buy 4 but can also buy singly
Disadvantages: you have to look around for the cheapest as prices do vary
...We have a very good Epson DX6000 printer.
This printer takes 4 separate inks.
This comes in handy when just one colour gets low.
I know its low because when I go to do some printing I will get a low ink flashing sign come up and it will then show me how much ink is left and roughly how much copying I can do before it finally runs out. It will also tell me which ink is low.
I print off a lot of photographs so it is not just the black ink that runs out but the coloured ones as well.
When we first had the printer we did notice that some non epson inks were cheaper and we did think of buying them. We were then informed that if we used these on this printer that was still under guarantee they might refuse to honour the guarantee as we had not used their own brand of ink.
We therefore decided to stick to Epson...

Epson 4490
Advantages: Excellent quality when scanning slides and negatives
Disadvantages: Professional mode could cause problems for the novice used
...I bought a 4490 specifically to use for scanning slides and negatives. There is no doubt that this scanner is an excellent item for those people that want a professional looking job at a very good price.
Previously I had the Epson 2480 and although this was good, it is no match for the 4490,expected really with the time elasped between the release of the models.
With the resolution set at least 2400dpi and with only unsharp mask and colour restoration selected the faded slides and neagatives were nearly as new.
There are a few points that should be noted. If you are a novice and just want to scan something quickly without having to set different functions this may not be a scanner for you. By selecting colour restoration and Background correction when they are not needed, you can have a negative effect on what would have been...
