As I never had any real problems with my previous Epson I decided I would stick with the same brand an go for the Perfection V700 - a scanner designed specifically for photo scanning but that also acts as an all-purpose scanner. It incorporates Twain and WIA drivers that let you scan from most compatible programs. There also an optical character recognition (OCR) program that converts text images into a document that is in an editable format. Disadvantages: Very Poor Reference Guide, Noisy, No Power Switch, edges of Scan Bed Missed From Scan

...with plenty of technical knowledge but no appreciation of how to impart this knowledge to the uninitiated consumer. Having had bad experiences previously with maufacturers support lines and a poor opinion of interactive support sites, I didn't use these, preferring to bash on by myself. I had therefore to learn to use the scanner by trial and error. This too is not satisfactory and in my view the reference guide is something which needs to be looked at by Epson. Perhaps their own support is excellent, but I don't suppose I'll ever know. I've had to give it a rating in order that the review is accepted so it gets "Satisfactory." A decent set of instructions would mean Support would not be an issue for most users. Epson V100 Flatbed Scanner

Advantages: Good quality scans, easy to connect, works with Vista (only V32 tested)
Disadvantages: Slow in use, 30 sec warmup before each scan; software setting tedious

...Cheap easy to fit and works with Vista too. Quality of image produced is very good. This scanner though is let down by its software. Yes, you can do almost anything you want but the software is oriented around single jobs. If you have an application where you might want each time to scan first a photo and then a form then it's very tedious setting everything up each time. Not only that but if you want to use it for archiving documents it needs half a minute warm up bvetweeneach and every scan. Even if you scan multiple sheets using Acrobat as the controlling software, if you haven't turned the page and clicked on next scan within ten seconds then you have a 30 second wait. As if all that isn't enough the flat bed cover doesn't press out any folds in a letter so dark patches can require duplicate scans....

Advantages: Excellent quality when scanning slides and negatives
Disadvantages: Professional mode could cause problems for the novice used

...I bought a 4490 specifically to use for scanning slides and negatives. There is no doubt that this scanner is an excellent item for those people that want a professional looking job at a very good price. Previously I had the Epson 2480 and although this was good, it is no match for the 4490,expected really with the time elasped between the release of the models. With the resolution set at least 2400dpi and with only unsharp mask and colour restoration selected the faded slides and neagatives were nearly as new. There are a few points that should be noted. If you are a novice and just want to scan something quickly without having to set different functions this may not be a scanner for you. By selecting colour restoration and Background correction when they are not needed, you can have a negative effect on what would have been...
